Liverpool manager Arne Slot: "It's only a compliment that people tell everyone that we've spent so much because that tells you the players we've brought in are seen as very good players."

  3. 'Frimpong can play in many positions'published at 16:27 BST 16 September

Liverpool v Atletico Madrid (Wed, 20:00 BST)

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot on Jeremie Frimpong returning: "In every position we have a lot of competition and he can play in many positions. Let's see if if he plays tomorrow and where he's going to play."

Liverpool manager Arne Slot on how Andrew Robertson can help Milos Kerkez: "Brilliantly well? I think he played well [against Burnley]. Milos started the game not brilliantly well but well, and we had to take him off.

"Then you had Andy Robertson to replace him and he came in like he'd never been doing anything else.

"It was a difficult game for us and I don't think anybody played brilliantly well but it's good for us to have him in the squad."

  5. Late wins because of 'the teams we've faced' - Slotpublished at 16:21 BST 16 September

Liverpool v Atletico Madrid (Wed, 20:00 BST)

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot on his side's habit of winning games late on: "Yes, everybody's very focused on us winning the games late on. But that, again, has a lot to do with the teams we've faced as well.

"Of course it has a bit to do with how fit we are, that we can always keep going and make a difference in the last part of the game.

"But if you face maybe teams that are not as strong you can win the game a little earlier, so it maybe tells you how difficult our schedule has been in the first few games.

"And then people will say, "What are you talking about? You played Burnley as well but last season this team only conceded 14 goals in the whole season."

  6. 'A difficult team to play against'published at 16:19 BST 16 September

Liverpool v Atletico Madrid (Wed, 20:00 BST)

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot on facing Atletico Madrid: "When I was at Feyenoord in the Eredivisie, we knew when you went from a Sunday to a Wednesday you had to make two steps up unless you played Ajax or PSV on the weekend.

"But in the Premier League, it is the same quality or a little step up so again, a very difficult one because Atletico Madrid have done so well in La Liga. So many years with Diego Simeone and even able to win the league twice when you face Real Madrid and Barcelona.

"Again a team that is a difficult one to play against because of their mentality, team performance and quality."

  7. 'Far above my expectations during the summer'published at 16:16 BST 16 September

Liverpool v Atletico Madrid (Wed, 20:00 BST)

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot on fighting for all trophies: "We are far above my expectations during the summer. We all know what happened this summer and for us to be on 12 points from these fixtures is so much more than I expected, especially after so many changes in our group.

"I think we can do better but we're not every time going to face Newcastle away and Arsenal at home."

  8. 'If we sold Szobozslai, he'd be worth £100m too'published at 16:13 BST 16 September

Liverpool v Atletico Madrid (Wed, 20:00 BST)

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot on Florian Wirtz and what adjustment he needs to make: "I put that down to Bournemouth, Newcastle, Arsenal and to a team we faced this weekend but only conceded 14 goals last season.

"Someone told me that it's the first time Burnley lost a home game and it tells you how hard it is to play these games and win.

"There's so much focus on our new signings and especially pundits who favour, not us, but some other clubs in the country that cannot stop talking about £450m, I repeat £450m, £450m but always forget the £300m that we've sold.

"These players we've brought in are a lot of money but are playing now with players worth the same amount of money. If we want to strengthen the squad we have to spend that money. If we were to sell Dominik Szoboszlai tomorrow he'd be worth £100m as well."

  9. 'Only sure thing is Isak won't play 90'published at 16:07 BST 16 September

Liverpool v Atletico Madrid (Wed, 20:00 BST)

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot on Isak playing tomorrow: "Definitely a chance because he's in the squad and the chance to play, I would usually say 99.9% sure but I can say 100% sure he will not play 90 minutes but he's part of the squad.

"It's already a Champions League game to look forward to but if people look forward to his playing time that could mean that could happen tomorrow as well."

On potentially starting: "The only thing we're sure of is he will not play 90."

  10. 'Isak won't play 90 - but he's in the squad'published at 16:04 BST 16 September

  11. League leaders - but fall to eventual winnerspublished at 16:03 BST 16 September

Arne Slot's side cruised through the league phase last season, claiming impressive wins over Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen at Anfield along the way.

Their reward? A huge last 16 tie against Paris St-Germain.

A goalkeeping masterclass from Alisson and a late goal from Harvey Elliott saw them emerge from a hammering in Paris with a 1-0 win.

However, it was something of a role reversal at Anfield with Liverpool the better side - at least in normal time - but the Parisians securing a 1-0 win thanks to Ousmane Dembele's early goal.

It went to penalties and eventual winners PSG came out on top, 4-1.

  13. 'Szoboszlai playing right-back at world-class level'published at 15:53 BST 16 September

    Liverpool

    Dominik SzoboszlaiImage source, Getty Images

Virgil van Dijk on Hungarian duo Milos Kerkez and Dominik Szoboszlai: "Milos has a lot of energy and quality. I think he is a fantastic, aggressive and full of energy player who's learning with us how we play and the intensity of playing for Liverpool - dealing with that on and off the pitch, it isn't easy to deal with. He's going to be absolutely fine.

"For Dom, I think he's had a great season so far, playing in a position that is maybe not his favourite one but he did it on an amazing and world-class level, in my opinion. It's a great option to have for the season."

  14. 'It takes time and that's normal'published at 15:50 BST 16 September

Liverpool v Atletico Madrid (Wed, 20:00 BST)

    Liverpool

Virgil van Dijk on gelling with the new players: "Hopefully as quick as possible [to gel] and I'm definitely happy with the quality of players we have brought in. But it takes time and that's normal.

"To be here with us in the team, it's a great place to be. The club is in a great place. It gives them the opportunity to express themselves as quickly as possible.

"When I joined the club as well you want to feel welcomed so you can express yourself on and off the pitch. That's definitely been happening."

  15. 'The complete striker'published at 15:46 BST 16 September

Liverpool v Atletico Madrid (Wed, 20:00 BST)

    Liverpool

Virgil van Dijk on what type of player Isak is like to come up against: "He's a clinical finisher. If you look at his finishing skills - heading, left foot, top corners, he's the complete striker at the moment.

"You can say the same for Hugo. They're a little bit different but not so much, they're very comfortable on the ball with link-up play, they have pace and that's what's being asked of for the modern day striker. Both are a handful and that's obviously good that they're on my side now."

  16. 'They will never give up'published at 15:44 BST 16 September

Liverpool v Atletico Madrid (Wed, 20:00 BST)

    Liverpool

Virgil van Dijk on facing a Diego Simeone team: "We lost [in 2020] and it was a painful one at the time to get knocked out. It's a team that works so hard, a world class manager and it says a lot that he's been there for such a long time.

"We have a lot of respect for them, they have world class players, a world class goalie - I can just go on and on.

"They will never give up, that's their mentality. They may not have had the best start that they would have wanted in the league but this is their campaign as well and they'd love to do well.

"We have to be ready and we had a good session today and now it's time to prepare in your own way at home and be ready for tomorrow."

Virgil van Dijk says he will be ready to "rock and roll" tomorrow but he's done with his media duties for now.

We'll have more quotes from the Liverpool centre-back very soon, plus there is still manager Arne Slot to come.

  18. Which English club will go furthest?published at 15:41 BST 16 September

    Champions League

Liverpool's Florian WirtzImage source, Getty Images

Sami Mokbel: Liverpool for all the reasons I've already mentioned. But, away from the Merseysiders, Arsenal look well-equipped to go deep into the competition. Their squad is among the strongest in European football.

Steve Wilson: I like the look of Chelsea, but obviously Liverpool will strongly fancy their chances.

Stephen Warnock: Chelsea are my surprise package, but Liverpool will go the furthest of the Premier League sides.

Steph Houghton: I see Liverpool as having the squad depth to be able to compete in all competitions. Their signings have added real quality to an already strong squad.

Matt Upson: For similar reasons to why I think Barca will win it, I think Arsenal will do the best of the English teams. The core of their team is still together, they have strengthened their squad and they are also another big European campaign further along. They can use a run like the one they had last season in order to be even more successful.

Pat Nevin: I am certain Arsenal have got that depth you need to go far in this competition.

Chelsea have got a good chance of improving again but Arsenal, with their squad and especially when they get everyone back fit, will absolutely be able to manage.

Guillem Balague: I think Chelsea are creating something special. Remember when their fans were moaning about the team?

The hardest thing is to see the bigger picture when you are a fan, but Chelsea have got youth, direction, a fantastic manager, ambition and order - in the same positional football PSG are so good at. Love their journey to the top.

  19. 'Work hard, enjoy being the number nine for Liverpool'published at 15:38 BST 16 September

    Liverpool

Virgil van Dijk on squad depth with Isak joining: "It's not really an addition is it? It's a replacement because players with a lot of quality left us so we had to replace these players who were so important for us and who we had a lot of success with.

"But it comes with the price tag and the price tag we have no control over. There will always be talks about that and that creates a sort of pressure but it's down to him and us that we don't speak about it.

"Just work hard, enjoy being the number nine for Liverpool, help the team with goals and assist, link up play and help others and that's the only thing."
