John Askey led Truro City to promotion in his first season in charge

Truro City manager John Askey says he is still looking to strengthen his side ahead of their first season in the National League.

The Tinners have already brought in a number of new players such as Harry Kite, Lirak Hasani and Max Kinsey, while Luke Jephcott has moved on a permanent deal after being on loan at Truro last season.

City begin their first-ever campaign in the fifth tier at Wealdstone on Saturday, 9 August after winning National League South last season.

"We still need another goalkeeper along with Lavs (Dan Lavercombe), we need another centre-back, another centre-forward and probably a couple of lads who can play in different positions," Askey told BBC Sport.

"We're only a small squad and if we want to compete then we need to bring in one or two more experienced players."

Askey is hoping he can strengthen his side before the start of the season.

But he says he understands that he may have to wait until later in the summer transfer window for the right players to become available as other clubs make decisions on their squads.

"We're pretty close on one player, he's just got past his medical," he added.

"Then what you find at smaller clubs is you have to wait until you get towards the start of the season and you'll pick up probably better players than what you would at the start of pre-season.

"Truro is not going to be players' first choices, so we have to wait and then when lads feel as though they've got something at an elite club, then all of a sudden the contract gets taken away or they're not taken on, then hopefully we can step in and pick up one or two bargains."
