Truro 'not relying' on other teams - Askey

Truro City manager John Askey says his side are not relying on other teams' results after maintaining their play-off bid with a 1-0 win at Tonbridge Angels on Saturday.

Defender Will Dean scored the only goal of the game in the 17th minute to confirm Truro's second consecutive away victory, bolstering the Cornwall club's hopes of remaining in the National League South play-off positions as they sit sixth.

"It's in our hands," said former Shrewsbury and Port Vale boss Askey.

"We're not relying on other people to lose, to stay in the play-offs. It's down to us which is a nice position to be in.

"We've got about 14 games to go, so we've got to keep our heads, keep working hard and hopefully we'll get to where we want to be."

Truro's recent spike in away form has made up for their three consecutive home draws, most recently against mid-table Farnborough.

Askey, 60, pointed to strong winds on the south-west coast affecting his side's football but believes Truro's away performances have given the players "confidence".

"It's been difficult at home," he added. "The wind doesn't help us on the pitch at the moment, so hopefully we can get the pitch right for next Saturday and we can get the ball down and play a little bit more which has been difficult at home for about six or seven weeks.

"The players take confidence, I don't think it matters who we play. It's about us, our performances and if we do that, then we've got a great chance whoever we play."

Truro next face 14th-placed Slough Town at home on Saturday.
