Bury are granting free entry to Morecambe supporters for their opening Northern Premier League West game of the season against Newcastle Town on Saturday as a "gesture of solidarity and footballing friendship".

Morecambe had been set to face Boston United on the same day to kick off their National League campaign but the beleaguered club were suspended from the league in July.

The Shakers were expelled from the English Football League in 2019 and, having initially begun life as a phoenix club, have since returned under the Bury FC name and worked their way through the footballing pyramid.

The club said Morecambe fans would be eligible by showing their season ticket at the turnstiles or by wearing their club's badge.

"We at Bury Football Club have watched with great sympathy and understanding as you navigate uncertain times. As a club that knows all too well what it feels like to face challenges off the pitch, we want you to know: you are not alone," the Shakers said., external

"Whether you're in need of a temporary football fix, a place to feel connected, or simply want to enjoy a matchday with fellow fans who understand - our gates and hearts are open to you.

"Wear your colours. Bring your voices. You'll be warmly welcomed as part of our football family."

The culture secretary Lisa Nandy last week wrote an open letter to Morecambe owner Jason Whittingham urging him to sell the club with prospective buyers Panjab Warriors previously saying in a joint statement with Morecambe's minority shareholders that the club would shut down on Monday.

It is still unclear what the future holds for the club and whether a takeover can take place in order for the club to retain its National League place.
