Former Leicester, Hull and Crystal Palace manager Peter Taylor has resigned as the boss of non-league Canvey Island after five months in charge.
The 72-year-old made his decision following defeat by Benfleet in the BBC Essex Senior Cup following a penalty shoot-out.
Taylor replaced Brad Wellmen, who resigned in May after The Islanders finished 17th in Isthmian League Premier Division, but leaves with them bottom of the table, having won just one of their 11 games this season.
"Lady luck hasn't been kind to us this season but the position of the team is not good enough and I take total responsibility for that," he said.
"I knew it wasn't going to be easy as we were a brand new team and the division is probably as strong as it's ever been.
"I wish the club and supporters well. They have got good people there that work extremely hard and deserve to have happier match days."
Player-coach Michael Finneran has been put in temporary charge.
Taylor began his career as a youth player at the club before moving on to Southend United, Palace, Tottenham Hotspur and Leyton Orient, as well as winning four England caps.
He has also managed in India and New Zealand and was England caretaker boss for a game in Italy in 2000 when he gave David Beckham the captain's armband for the first time.
