Rotherham United defender Thomas Holmes is expected to be out for two months with a knee injury.
Holmes signed on loan for the season from Luton Town on deadline day, and played the whole game in the Millers' win over Exeter City on Saturday.
But a scan has revealed that the 25-year-old picked up a Grade 2 tear to his lateral collateral ligament.
"I spoke to the lad this morning and he's devastated," Millers manager Matt Hamshaw said, external.
"He feels like he's let everyone down, which he absolutely hasn't. It's horrific for him. He'd just got back to playing.
"Hopefully, he'll be back in around eight weeks."
Rotherham are 17th in League One with seven points from their opening six games of the season. Their next game is at AFC Wimbledon on Saturday, 13 September (15:00 BST).
