Livingston say the Scottish FA has admitted to "a mistake" after they were denied a penalty in Saturday's 2-1 defeat by Rangers.

Emmanuel Fernandez appeared to handle the ball from a shot by Livi forward Tete Yengi when the score was 1-1.

Yengi had just equalised for the visitors in the 18th minute, but they would go on to lose a second-half goal and stay bottom of the Scottish Premiership.

Chairman Calvin Ford stated on the Livingston website how "frustrated" he was by the decision.

"It was a huge moment in the match, particularly having just levelled things moments before, and we firmly believe we should have been awarded a penalty and, with it, a very good chance to take the lead," he said.

"We held lengthy conversations with the SFA this week, and the incident has officially been recognised as a mistake. We should have received a penalty.

"While the easy road would be to dwell in the anger and frustration, we must now put this behind us and move forward. Believe me, this is a challenge for myself as well.

"But how we react to the incident on Sunday – fully supporting our team against Aberdeen – is far more significant to the health and success of this club. Let's turn our anger into incredible roaring support for our team this weekend."

Livi, who were promoted last season, trail Dundee by a point and St Mirren and Kilmarnock by two.

An incident similar to the Yengi-Fernandez one took place during Motherwell's 2-0 win over Hibernian on Tuesday.

Elijah Just's shot came off Hibs centre-half Grant Hanley's hand as it went out of play, with VAR awarding the penalty and Tawanda Maswanhise converting before Just knocked in a second.
