Luton Town defender Teden Mengi says their first league win of the season is the "line in the sand" following their underwhelming start to their Championship campaign.

The Hatters edged out Millwall on Saturday, with centre-back Mengi getting the only goal of the game at The Den to get Luton's season up and running after a poor return of only one point from their first four matches.

"It was a top shift from the team," Mengi told BBC Three Counties Radio.

"We needed the three points. We've got off to a shaky start but we put that behind us."

Life back in the second tier following their immediate relegation from the Premier League last season has been tough for Luton.

Rob Edwards' side were hammered 4-1 by fellow top-flight relegation sufferers Burnley on the opening day, with further defeats at Preston, and at home against Queens Park Rangers.

Their only point prior to the win over the Lions was a goalless draw at Championship new boys Portsmouth.

Mengi did not blame their slow start on any lingering disappointment from their experience in the Premier League and wants their first three points of the season to be start of some new-found momentum.

"I can't really put a label on it but we're off the mark," the 22-year-old said.

"We don't intend to look back now, we intend to kick on and do what we know we can do. It's a line in the sand and we only look forward.

"There's still stuff to go over [from the Millwall game] like what went well and what we could've done better.

"The staff here are really good at doing that."
