We must stick with Postecoglou, injuries aside most of our signings are for the future and it would be madness to sack him now.

Tottenham Hotspur's 2-1 defeat by Aston Villa now leaves the Europa League as the only route for Ange Postecoglou to uphold his claim that he "always" wins a trophy in his second season at a club.

Postecoglou has repeatedly referred to the club's injury crisis when defending his side's poor results this term and the Spurs boss offered a staunch post-match defence of his players when asked if he felt it would only be fair to judge him once key individuals had returned.

"People can judge me. They can say I've done a bad job, I'm not up to it or whatever. That's fine," Postecoglou said.

"What I'm saying is you can't be critical of our players' performances at this time.

"If you want to measure anything on what they're doing at the moment, other than the extreme situation they're dealing with, then I think your analysis is skewed and it's not objective.

"If it's to get rid of me that's fine. Good on you. Go for it a million times. But in terms of this group of players, what they've given over the past two and a half months has been outstanding."

FA Cup highlights: Aston Villa 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur

An impressive Aston Villa booked their spot in the FA Cup fifth round for the first time in a decade as the pressure increased on Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou.

Villa took the lead after 57 seconds with Jacob Ramsey firing through the hands of Spurs goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky, who should have kept out the shot.

Morgan Rogers sealed Villa's passage into the last 16 with his 11th goal of the season, when he pounced on a loose ball in the box to prod high into the roof of the net in the 64th minute.

Tottenham got one back late on through Mathys Tel but it was not enough as they fell to a second cup defeat in four days.

Mike, Kettering: In response to Simon at 8:57. Yesterday, Aston Villa had two midfielders playing at centre-back, their first-choice right-back out and first-choice striker out, but you don't hear Unai Emery using injuries as an excuse.

Peter W, Birmingham: Re Simon 08:57 - It works as an argument if Spurs hadn’t come up against a team also missing three of their first-choice defenders and a fourth going off after 20 minutes, also missing two key midfielders, and an England centre forward. They lost yesterday because they deserved to.

  6. This is what happens when you are missing 11 players - Postecogloupublished at 09:04 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February

    Aston Villa 2-1 Tottenham

We like to look at the narrative in this page Simon, that's what we do. And there are plenty of talking points to discuss after a thrilling weekend of FA Cup action.

Tottenham's current struggles are certainly a talking point. We will be looking at their defeat at Aston Villa and what it means for Spurs' season.

Manager Ange Postecoglou made the same point on Sunday - that Liverpool's defeat at Plymouth shows what can happen to a side missing many of its key players, just like Spurs have had to contend with over the past few months.

Does Liverpool's result with much of their first choice XI missing not help people understand why Spurs are struggling? Ange keeps saying that any team would struggle without four of their back five, two key midfielders and two key attackers - and, oh look, he was right. But it doesn't suit the media narrative when all they want to do is put the boot in to Spurs.

John Acres, who presents the breakfast show on BBC Radio Devon, summing it up on BBC Radio 5 Live: "Days like this don't really happen down here. This club in the last 15 years has almost gone out of business. It has been into administration, it was close to being relegated from League Two.

"They have got a good ownership in place, they had the [Ryan] Lowe and [Steven] Schumacher years where they went from League Two to League One and into the Championship. They have the second lowest budget in the league. It looks like they could still be relegated and Millwall here in the week is a huge game - bigger than this one

"These days don't happen very often. Plymouth is on a peninsula down in the south west. Transport links aren't the best, we don't see a lot of big concerts, we don’t see a lot of huge sporting events so when something like this happens in a city like this which is a big passionate city, which is out of the way, it means everything to these people, these fans who work hard, week in week out in the dockyard, in tourism, making the 4000 pasties for this one.

"It's a huge, huge day for this football club."

  12. A lack of options for Slot?published at 08:41 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February

    Plymouth 1-0 Liverpool

Let's open this up to Liverpool fans. What do you think? Was the starting XI against Plymouth not strong enough to get the job done?

With players like Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and Federico Chiesa in the side, didn't manager Arne Slot show his intent?

It's been said that the difference between Liverpool's side and Manchester City's at Leyton Orient, for example, is that Pep Guardiola had players on the bench who could change the game in their favour.

Slot brought on Darwin Nunez, who missed a great chance to equalise, but was the Dutchman wrong to not keep some of his other game changers among the substitutes?

We were poor at Plymouth but congrats to them for a well deserved win. Do I think Slot was wrong to field a weakened team? No, not all. There are players like Van Dijk, Salah and Gravenberch who have played consecutive games for weeks. I am not disappointed at being out of the FA cup.

  14. Premier League leaders shot downpublished at 08:29 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February

    Plymouth 1-0 Liverpool

Here's a surprising stat for you, and anyone who has listened to the latest edition of Football Daily will know the answer to this, but Liverpool became only the fourth team to be top of the Premier League and lose to a side outside the top tier in the FA Cup.

Can you name the other three?

Hardie scores penalty for Plymouth after Liverpool handball

Arne Slot's seamless succession to Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager has shown he is not only an outstanding coach but a fast learner - but he was given a harsh lesson in one of the game's oldest rules on a wild afternoon in Devon.

Never play fast and loose with the grand old FA Cup.

The sight of Plymouth Argyle, bottom of the Championship, embarrassing Premier League leaders and the previously all-conquering Liverpool with this fourth-round victory was a compelling response to those who would to attempt to downgrade the magic and history of the competition.

And for Slot, it proved to be the first wrong move in a stellar start at Anfield, proof that you try to play tricks with the FA Cup at your peril.

Plymouth manager Miron Muslic has achieved what many in football thought was impossible - guiding his bottom-of-the-Championship Plymouth Argyle side past Premier League leaders Liverpool in the FA Cup.

Ryan Hardie's penalty was enough to secure a famous fourth-round upset at Home Park on Sunday.

"It is a magical day for us. I told the lads to enjoy it, and we are now part of Argyle history," said Muslic.

"It is a big day for all of us, somehow I feel we deserve this day.

"I am speechless. Normally, they tell me I'm eloquent. It is a proud moment. It is a big day."

Compared to the story of Muslic's start in life, beating six-time European champions Liverpool may have felt relatively easy.

FA Cup, what a weekend of football as football should be played. Goals from everywhere and no interference from VAR or GLT. Having watched most of the games the only thing that annoyed me and I lost count in the end. How many times the commentators and pundits quoted “If VAR was being used that would have been offside or that wouldn’t have been a goal.” After listening to all complaints about VAR you would think they would give it a rest. But at the end of the day, it was great to watch. All the lower league teams win or lose gave their all. As a Liverpool supporter, I know how this feels.
