  2. How history-chasing Italy can threaten England at Euro 2025published at 11:54 British Summer Time 18 July

    Alex Brotherton
    BBC Sport journalist

Italy stand between England and a third consecutive major tournament final.

Sarina Wiegman's side would be favourites to progress, but after Italy's impressive performance against Norway in the last-eight it would be foolish to underestimate them.

Italy are 13th in the Fifa world rankings, eight places below England but have never dropped below 19th since Fifa started its women's rankings in 2003.

The Lionesses and le Azzurre have met three times in the past decade - Wiegman's side earned a 2-1 win in the Arnold Clark Cup in February 2023, before inflicting a 5-1 defeat in a friendly 12 months later. In 2017, the sides drew 1-1 in a friendly.

  3. Why Sarina Wiegman picked Michelle Agyemang for Euro 2025published at 11:50 British Summer Time 18 July

Michelle Agyemang has played an important role as a subsittue for England during this Euros campaign.

The 19-year-old forward made a big impact in the quarter-final, coming off the bench to score the equaliser for the Lionesses that kept them in the game.

Have a listen to why Sarina Wiegman decided to call up the Arsenal youngster.

Big call for Wiegman with her centre backs now for the semi, a captain who may not be fully fit and another starter who hasn't shown her best this tournament (last night especially). Just glad there's nobody I'd trust more making such a tough choice.

  5. What threat could Italy provide?published at 11:41 British Summer Time 18 July

    Alex Brotherton
    BBC Sport journalist

Though Italy only scored three goals in the group stages, they have scored first in each of their four outings in Switzerland.

Andrea Soncin's side controlled possession in the first half against Norway and transitioned from defence to attack with frightening speed.

England's defence have already struggled with the pace of France and Sweden's forwards, and that has been an ongoing concern since the World Cup in 2023.

"Italy load the line. They do it really effectively and the Norwegians just couldn't deal with how they stretch the game," former England defender Anita Asante said on BBC One.

Italy like to make the pitch as wide as possible. Against Norway their wide players hugged the touchline, meaning makeshift left-back Guro Reiten was unable to contribute to attacks. They could look to pin back England full-backs Lucy Bronze and Alex Greenwood in a similar way.

Last night’s watch could not have been scripted and totally emotionally exhausting but the result is everything. Sarina got it totally right with her goalkeeper choice for the tournament but I still cannot work out why Mary would not want to have been to experience that. France v England final!

I am 82 and been on a few rollercoasters - this was England's best!

  7. 'Wiegman going to be thinking about back four'published at 11:34 British Summer Time 18 July

    Jonas Eidevall
San Diego Wave manager on BBC One

Sarina is probably going to go away from this game thinking more about how her back four is looking, both with injuries and performances I don't think Sarina would be happy with.

The players are now full of confidence, they have the players who can come in and do the job and that's important.

Slightly uncomfortable with all the mentions of the final. Still got a semi-final to win first (and last night proven nothing should be taken for granted)!

  9. How did Italy reach the semi-finals?published at 11:26 British Summer Time 18 July

    Alex Brotherton
    BBC Sport journalist

Italy progressed to the knockouts by finishing second in Group B behind world champions Spain.

Their campaign began with a 1-0 win against Belgium, before conceding an 89th minute equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Portugal.

A 3-1 defeat by Spain on matchday three mattered little because Portugal failed to beat Belgium.

Italy were the better side for much of their quarter-final against Norway, and spurned several chances before captain Cristiana Girelli broke the deadlock in the 50th minute.

Ada Hegerberg equalised for Norway moments after missing a penalty for the second time this summer, but Girelli headed home a dramatic stoppage-time winner for a historic victory for the Italians.

  10. Next up for the Lionesses: The Italian Jobpublished at 11:21 British Summer Time 18 July

    Sophie Brown
    BBC Sport

England have beaten their semi-final opponents Italy in the last five meetings, a run of games which stretches back for 16 years.

However, Italy did win the last time the sides met in a major tournament, which was in their opening match at Euro 2009 in Finland. England took the lead, despite having Casey Stoney sent off in the first half-hour, but Italy fought back to win 2-1.

Credit rightly going to the forward players who got England back into it, but in terms of the player of the match it has got to be Lucy Bronze. Incredible leadership, never-ending physical commitment, getting the first goal, and a Pearce-esque penalty to top it off.

  13. No substitute for successpublished at 11:07 British Summer Time 18 July

    Sophie Brown
    BBC Sport

Against Sweden, England manager Sarina Wiegman once again used her famed substitution strategy to great effect, with the trio of replacements changing the game when they came on midway through the second half.

Wiegman admitted afterwards there was also a bit of luck involved in England’s victory, but whatever the reason, it has boosted her position as the Lionesses’ most successful manager, with her win % topping 70%.

Spare a thought for Sweden. Cruising to victory until 78 minutes and then lost on penalties. They must be absolutely gutted. I know how they feel having followed England football teams for decades.

That was absolutely exhausting and I wasn't even on the pitch. I feel very proud.

The mentality of those players to step up. Even those who missed, the mentality to still put your hand up and say I want to take a penalty. But Luzy Bronze stood up and absolutely smashed it into the back of the net when we needed someone to score and Hannah Hampton made some big big saves.

Full credit to England but devastating obviously for Sweden because they were in this game for a long long time.

Great tenacity and determination from England to get the two late goals, and if that wasn't dramatic enough, we had the penalties. I don't think I've ever seen so many telegraphed penalties from a single team in a single shootout - lucky, lucky England. But also - love it!

Chloe Kelly reflected on the challenging first half and lessons learned:

"I think everyone was a little frustrated [with the first half performance], we weren't at our best and the standards we have set. But I think Sweden are a great side, we have to give them respect and compliment them. They were at their best tonight, and we had to match that.

"I think we came unstuck a little bit, but we worked it out in the end and I think that's what a great side does. We showed as a team how resilient we are, and we never had that experience before. Now we've got it in our back pocket going forward as well, so it's really important that we use that."

No matter how bad England were in that first half, you always know England have got goal scorers in that side and you know if they get their moment, England can get back into the game.

The pressure Chloe Kelly was under to step up and take that penalty the way she did and to finish it. She came on and made such an immediate impact.

Having managed to secure tickets for the final, we've been waiting all tournament to pick the best time to surprise our daughters with the news. We chose just after Agyemang's equaliser last night - SO glad the penalties didn't ruin it for us. We were all exhausted afterwards!
