Watched most of the shootout from behind my hands while trying not to annoy my Scottish wife. So worth the brain fog even two hours into work! Got to start Chloe Kelly!

  3. 'As a goalkeeper, just worry about saving them'published at 08:13 British Summer Time

FT: Sweden 2-2 England (aet, England win 3-2 on pens)

    Siobhan Chamberlain
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast

I really feel sorry for the Swedish keeper Jennifer Falk. She saved three penalties in a row then took the next penalty to send them through and miss.

My issue with goalkeepers taking penalties, my thought process is ‘I don’t want to be worried about taking penalties and the pressure of scoring one, my focus has to be on saving them'.

As a goalkeeper, just worry about saving them. She did a phenomenal job and now her memories of this tournament will be of the miss, not the brilliant saves she made in the build up to it.

Thanks for the message, Em. Chloe Kelly's penalty was the best of the shoot-out, riffled into the top corner while also sending the keeper the wrong way.

I hope your board presentation is just as good.

On my way into work I tripped over as I entered the building. In penalty terms that's like attempting a Panenka but instead chipping the ball straight to the goalie.

I have a board presentation today that’s been completely thrown into chaos as I hadn’t planned for extra time and penalties last night…going into the session later like Chloe Kelly taking a pen…whallop!

FT: Sweden 2-2 England (aet, England win 3-2 on pens)

    Ellen White
England Euro 2022 winner on BBC One

I've known Hannah since she was 16-years-old at Birmingham and to see her development and growth now into England No 1 and saving penalties in quarter-finals of tournaments, I am very proud for her.

She has a big role in these Euros with Mary Earps retiring. She made a few mistakes in the game but she still had that mentality to come back in that shootout and really help England overcome Sweden.

Sarina is going to have a selection headache for Italy. I rate Ella Toone but she went missing yesterday and Chloe Kelly literally changed the game. The only reason not to start Kelly is she's a victim of her own success coming off the bench! Anyway, let's go Lionesses.

Still buzzing from the win last night but please ladies practice penalties for the rest of the week, don’t think I can handle the stress of that again!

I was in the stadium last night and have to say it was sooooo nerve-racking! I hope Sarina has learnt now that she needs to mix up the line ups a bit more, first half the Swedes knew our every move.

    Thanks Anna, Dean and Sean!

I followed the match from my bed hoping to go straight to sleep after it finished ready for today's early start.

I was buzzing so much I couldn't sleep for hours. I'm very tired this morning (apologies for any errors I end up making) but it was so worth it.

Tense and scary. Pacing in my lounge and shouted so much at my telly. Brilliant mindset to win that penalty shoot out. What a game! Can we have a simple win against Italy?

    Anna

I had a dream last night that an England team played a very up and down football game, poor at times, scored a couple of quick fire goals, then missed a hat full of penalties but still got through to a semi final.

  17. What happened in the penalty shoot-out?published at 07:26 British Summer Time

    • Oh my, where do we start? Alessia Russo scored and Hannah Hampton saved to give England an early lead
    • But then Lauren James' penalty was saved and Sweden scored to take it to 1-1
    • Beth Mead, Magdelena Eriksson and Alex Greenwood all missed but Nathalie Bjorn scored to give Sweden a 2-1 lead after four pens each
    • Chloe Kelly had to score, which she did, and then Sweden keeper Jennifer Falk walloped her spot-kick to win it over the bar
    • Grace Clinton missed at the start of sudden death giving Sofia Jakobsson a chance to win it, only for Hampton to tip her effort on to the post
    • Lucy Bronze then scored to make it advantage England and the Lionesses won the shoot-out 3-2 after Smilla Holmberg spooned her strike off target

  18. What happened in the match?published at 07:23 British Summer Time

    • Sweden went 2-0 up inside 25 minutes thanks to goals from Kosovare Asllani and Arsenal forward Stina Blackstenius.
    • England looked to be heading out until Lucy Bronze pulled one back with 11 minutes to go and Michelle Agyemang equalised moments later.
    • After England's two in three minutes they looked favourites heading into extra time but it was actually Sweden who created the better chances in the additional 30 minutes.

Thanks KC, Dominic and Curt - and Curt it's gotta be optimism, right?

Embrace the chaos! Need I remind you that England needed penalties to beat Nigeria on their way to the 2023 World Cup final.
