Well the most-hyped regular season game in League One history did not disappoint.

Aren't we all glad that game was played on an atmospheric autumn night in England and not thousands of miles across the pond?

The stars were out in force, on and off the field, and two of League One's best teams put on a show for the watching millions.

There was class and chaos in fairly even measures but Jay Stansfield has made a couple of big repayments on that record-breaking transfer fee of his.

25 January is the return fixture at the Stok Racecourse and who knows just who might be popping through the turnstiles to watch on that day?

Blues manager Chris Davies speaking with Sky Sports: "It was our best performance. We've had patches and periods of the game where we've been really good but that's the first extended period we had.

"It was a difficult start but I didn't see any change from the players. It felt like from our point of view, it was wave after wave of attacks and it was just a case of when we could score.

"Where they've gone 1-0 up, from our point of view it was about moving the ball forward, getting aggressive with our positioning. We were trying to work it constantly and switching the play.

"The first Jay Stansfield goal is an instinct for goals. That's someone who is reading the game and going for the finish. The second one you have to credit to Alex Cochrane for that cross.

"Great start for Jay, with everything around him, but it wasn't just him, it was the whole team. From our point of view, it was a really good performance.

"It doesn't matter what happened tonight or any other game, every game is tough. Anyone who thought it would be easy doesn't understand football."

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson speaking to Sky Sports: "I thought we were excellent at the start. We got the goal, switched the play well, contained them really well and with their first shot on target really, they get a goal back.

"I've just said to the lads, we haven't had many setbacks in terms of conceding recently and our reaction to conceding the goal wasn't what it needed to be.

"We gave the ball away too cheaply and gave the ball back to a very good team too many times and gave them control.

"Then second-half, we just sat a bit too deep and we got punished by two moments of real quality."

The trouble for Birmingham City is they will have to forget about this quickly and get ready for Saturday's trip to a Rotherham United side they were relegated alongside last season and who have managed just one win in League One so far.

The good thing for Wrexham is they can forget about this quickly and get ready for Saturday's home meeting with a Crawley Town side who are winless in their last five, in all competitions, and they were promoted alongside last season.

Alex Cochrane, who provided an excellent cross to set-up Jay Stansfield's second goal, said the players weren't fazed by David Beckham, Tom Brady and Gary Neville watching on from the stands.

"For us boys, it's all outside noise to us," Cochrane told Sky Sports.

"We just focus on our game and the game plan. I thought everyone was top notch tonight. It's a big three points."

On Stansfield's performance, Cochrane added: "For his age, he's such a calm finisher. Last year he had a great year with the club and we're delighted to have him."

"A brilliant night for not just me but for the team. There was a lot of pressure on us tonight.

"I think that's what I wanted to add to my game, the easier goals from tap-ins. Last season I scored from outside the box a lot but this year, I want to add the tap-ins.

"There's pressure every game, for every player, not just for me. I'm going to go out every week and perform and work hard for them."

There was a swagger about Birmingham tonight and there are signs things are improving.

Looking at the squad, there’s a big strength in depth which was promised and needed. If Wrexham are top then we’re in with a good shout.

In that second-half, there was only one team who were going to win. Tonight feels like a bit of a turning point.

We need to make St Andrew's like it is tonight. We've had three crowds with more than 27,000 and it's an intimidating place to come.

This is a place that people are going to fear coming to.

We're legally not allowed to use the term six-pointer in September but on the basis of the opening six weeks of the season, you'd expect these two sides to be there or thereabouts all season long.

Wrexham's unbeaten start is over and their momentum is halted.

Blues were one goal away from going top in their own right tonight.

January 25th, 2025. That's the date when these two are due to lock-horns again.

That should be quite a spectacle at the Stok Racecourse.

It’s proven to be a difficult night. You always hope that you can come in form and play to your maximum. It wouldn’t have been a shock for Wrexham to take all three points but it would have been difficult.

It was a difficult second 45 minutes because they came up against a Birmingham side who were at their very best. They will go away and look at what they could and should have done better. They will move on.

Wrexham still sit top of the table. I doubt that they will come up a team as good as this all season. They’ve coped well up until tonight but Birmingham are on another level.

Wrexham looked fantastic and deservedly took the lead at St Andrew's through Jack Marriott's thumping finish from Thomas O'Connor's fine corner.

That was three minutes in. The vast majority of the remainder of the game was played in their half, and with the Wrexham players chasing shadows.

Jay Stansfield pounced to ram home a rebound to level the scores and then nodded Alex Cochrane's teasing cross home to complete the turnaround.

On his home debut Tomoki Iwata then fizzed home a 25-yarder and the only sour note was the late red card for Krystian Bielik who was swallowed up in red mist as Wrexham tempers frayed in the closing stages.

Wrexham need some inspiration and Seb Revan tries to provide some with a 30-yard blockbuster which flies a good 15 yards high and wide.

Seven added minutes at St Andrew's.

Tomoki Iwata gets a hero's reception as he is withdrawn after scoring his first Blues goal on his home debut.

Ben Davies is the new man for the final three minutes and change.

Krystian Bielik is off for Blues after picking up his second yellow card.

The Pole has dived in with a scissor challenge on Andy Cannon on halfway and has to trudge off.

He's lost his cool as the temperature around him heated up.

Paul Mullin thinks he's Wolverine. Appears on a close-up slow-mo replay that he had a nibble at Alex Cochrane's calf to spark that melee. Or at least had a good think about it.

James McClean and Ryan Barnett are withdrawn by Phil Parkinson, McClean possibly to avoid another booking. He seems to be having words with supporters as he heads to the bench and has been ushered down the tunnel by backroom staff.

Jacob Mendy and Seb Revan are into the action.
