Harrogate Town ended a run of three games without victory in all competitions by beating Newport County at the Exercise Stadium.

Goalkeeper Jacob Carney - making his league debut for Newport - spilled Ellis Taylor's cross, allowing Toby Sims to head the Sulphurites in front five minutes before half-time.

And the full-back's effort proved enough for the hosts who moved up to 14th following what was their fourth league triumph of the campaign.

Defeat - Newport's fifth from six away games in League Two this season - saw the Exiles drop three places to 13th.

Harrogate Town boss Simon Weaver told BBC Radio York:

"I thought it was a really good performance, it was disciplined and it had to be.

"I thought we set our stall out early in terms of trying to pass the ball, the players looked nice and composed on it.

"I think the more points we pick up in that manner, the confidence levels will surely lift and give us a platform to attack the season."

Newport County boss Nelson Jardim told BBC Radio Wales:

"It's a disappointing result, but the improvements you could see straight away, we got back on Monday (after Bradford City loss) and we kept going.

"I think we showed that we were in control for most of the time and I guess it's disappointing to not have at least a point from what we could do in this game.

"It's about the team feeling comfortable and I think we could see today the boys playing well and creating, not too many goal scoring chances, but that happened at both ends and one little detail decided the game."
