I agree with Harry Kane in a way. Players should be willing to give 100% for their country, but at the same time, who can blame the players for not playing. They are already playing too many games and it is affecting their fitness!!

Q for the BBC football page - Honest show of hands, who knows what the Nations League is? What is promotion, what are the groups, when is the final and how do you get there - I don’t personally know, and I’m not sure I care!

    England

If you've found it a little difficult to actually keep up with who is involved for England later, let us help. Here is the full 23 man squad in Greece for Lee Carsley to choose from. Fair to say it'll be experimental...

Defenders: Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace), Ezri Konsa (Aston Villa), Rico Lewis (Manchester City), Kyle Walker (Manchester City), Lewis Hall (Newcastle), Taylor Harwood-Bellis (Southampton), Jarrad Branthwaite (Everton), Tino Livramento (Newcastle)

Midfielders: Conor Gallagher (Atletico Madrid), Morgan Gibbs-White (Nottingham Forest), Angel Gomes (Lille), Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid), Curtis Jones (Liverpool), Morgan Rogers (Aston Villa)

The overwhelming factor for me with regards to England and players pulling out of the squad is that we have lost sight of how unimportant the Nations league is. It is more games that the calendar doesn’t need. Tournament qualification happened without it. I had little emotion when Greece scored their deserved winner at Wembley. That is far from normal for me. If players aren’t fully fit they shouldn’t be asked to play, but I realise that isn’t always the case.

I like the progression of the England Under-21 players into the senior squad. You want those players to progress as a unit, especially from a side that had success at the international stage.

If they are ready and good enough, sprinkle a bit of quality - which this England squad already has - and you are constantly churning out the future of English football.

I wouldn't be surprised if Lee Carsley went as close to an under-21 squad as he possibly could against Greece, as long as there is enough quality out there to get the result.

I think an inter-league tournament would be better. It would good to see a representative team selected from the Premier League clubs playing the equivalent from the Spanish, Italian and other top European leagues.

Lee Carsley has done really well. It's never easy to take over from someone like Gareth Southgate, who had us, as a nation, in the palm of his hands in the way he spoke to us through the press and the success we had in tournaments despite not actually picking up those winners' medals.

Carsley knew it was a transition and he was holding the reins for a short time. I was impressed because he was still prepared to try something new against Greece last time. Yes, it didn't work and we are now in a position where we have to win. But Southgate was criticised for not trying new things.

All in all, Carsley should be very proud of himself.

The Nations League is essentially an attempt to make friendlies more competitive. I can understand why players want a rest and withdraw from the squads. Nations League is meaningless to me.

Despite all the drama of Lee Carsley's interim management, a number of players pulling out of the squad and Thomas Tuchel joining in January, this is a must-win game for England.

Greece are a team who have beaten us very recently and shown that they know how to attack our weaknesses.

It's an opportunity for these England players to go out there after getting beaten and put things right.

Kobbie Mainoo, like Cole Palmer, was "itching to get on" as he watched England's opening two games against Serbia and Denmark at Euro 2024.

An indifferent start to the campaign brought with it plenty of criticism from the outside, something that the 19-year-old midfielder said was difficult to escape.

"I mean, it’s hard not to see it, you have a phone. It’s everywhere," Mainoo tells GQ. "So it was like, brush it off.

"People talk just to talk. And the [Gareth Southgate] made it a big thing, to like, ‘Forget what they’re saying, it’s just about us. You have to go out and play. You have to win games, that’s what it’s all about.’"

  13. Back three 'will suit' Manchester United - Ramseypublished at 15:14 Greenwich Mean Time

Wales captain Aaron Ramsey told the Planet Premier League podcast that he believes new Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim's system "will suit" the team.

The 33-year-old midfielder told the podcast that this was the system Wales used "when we got to the semi-finals" at Euro 2016.

"It's just about the players that you have available and how to get the best out of them and the best out of the individuals within that system," said Ramsey, adding, "I think he's (Amorim) had a lot of success at his previous club and I think that's going to be very exciting if you're a Man United Fan.”

Portuguese coach Amorim was appointed earlier this month on a two and a half year deal. He predominantly plays with a 3-4-3 and won two league titles in four years with Sporting Lisbon.

  14. Odegaard's return a 'massive lift' for Arsenal - Ramseypublished at 15:10 Greenwich Mean Time

Former Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey told the Planet Premier League podcast that Martin Odegaard’s return will give the Gunners a “massive lift”.

The Norway and Arsenal captain injured ankle ligaments during September's international break, forcing him to miss seven weeks of action. He made his return last week in Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat by Inter Milan in the Champions League.

Ramsey told the podcast that Odegaard has “been brilliant for Arsenal over the last few years,” praising his creativity.

Ramsey said the Gunners had been “missing that player in between the lines who can receive the ball in those little tight areas and slide these little killer passes through.”.

Mikel Arteta’s side sit fourth in the Premier League, nine points off leaders Liverpool.

Cardiff and Wales midfielder Aaron Ramsey told the Planet Premier League podcast that he has been “so impressed” by Premier League leaders Liverpool this season, both with and without the ball.

The 33-year-old Wales captain praised the Reds’ “compactness, the way that they're pressing, their willingness to defend together.”

Liverpool have only conceded six goals in 11 Premier League matches so far this season – the best defence in the league.

Ramsey also praised forward Mohamed Salah, who has eight goals and six assists so far this campaign.

“I know he's in the final year of his contract,” said Ramsey, “and he’s really going out, if that's the case, on a high at the moment. He's leaving everything out there.”

Northern Ireland have an array of talented youngsters in their squad, including Liverpool's Conor Bradley and Standard Liege's Isaac Price, who struck a hat-trick against Bulgaria in October.

Crystal Palace midfielder Justin Devenny has earned his first call-up after the 21-year-old made his Premier League debut against Fulham on Saturday.

Brighton's 19-year-old defender Ruairi McConville is also in line to win a first cap and so is Motherwell's Kofi Balmer.

However, Jamal Lewis and Ross McCausland will miss the double-header against Belarus and Luxembourg because of injury, as they join Paddy McNair and Eoin Toal, who are nursing hamstring injuries, on the sidelines.

  17. What is Northern Ireland's status in Nations League?published at 15:00 Greenwich Mean Time

    Northern Ireland

    Nations League table

Northern Ireland are in line for a promotion to League B as they top their group with two wins, one draw and a defeat.

Michael O'Neill's side began their League C campaign with a 2-0 win against Luxembourg, before a defeat to Bulgaria. But a goalless draw away at Belarus and a 5-0 thumping of the same opposition in Belfast have taken their tally to seven points.

They can gain promotion as early as Friday if they beat Belarus and Bulgaria drop points against Luxembourg.

My biggest issue with the Nations league is how spread out it is. When does it start and end? How can a tournament be months long with weeks off between games. Its hard to get invested in because we don't know when matches are or where teams stand. Is it a tournament or just a label for year round friendlies?

  19. 'Frustrating Euros' for Palmerpublished at 14:49 Greenwich Mean Time

    England

    Cole PalmerImage source, Getty Images

Kobbie Mainoo and Cole Palmer are the latest footballers to chat to GQ magazine, this time in its December edition. The outfits aren't quite as high fashion as Dominic Calvert-Lewin's past efforts, but you can take a look here, external.

With the headline stating the two midfielders are 'just getting started', Mainoo and Palmer discuss how they have become friends since stepping into the spotlight at Manchester United and Chelsea respectively, plus what is was like being a part of the England squad during this summer's Euros.

For Cole, going from the highs of a memorable season for his club to being back on the bench with his country was tough.

"It was frustrating at England, to be fair," said Palmer. "Not to say that the players aren’t good. But just coming off the back of the season I had, the form I was in, everything I was doing was coming off.

"So I’m not playing in the first two games even when the team was struggling, it was a bit like, Why?" Do you know what I mean?"

  20. Postpublished at 14:44 Greenwich Mean Time

That is a very bold statement, Adam.

I like the Nations League more than most, I think it's better than the friendlies we had before, but I'd definitely put the Euros ahead.
