Newport County secured a first League Two win since beating MK Dons 6-3 on 21 December

Newport County ended their six-game winless run in League Two with a vital victory over Barrow at Rodney Parade.

The hosts enjoyed more possession in the opening half in south Wales but struggled to carve out clear openings, with Barrow asking more questions of Nick Townsend without overly troubling the Exiles' goalkeeper.

Kian Spence went close for the visitors early on in the second half, but the decisive moment came on 70 minutes as Kyle Cameron turned Cameron Antwi's low cross into his own net.

Connor Mahoney looked to net a last-gasp equaliser for the Bluebirds, but his driven effort was saved by Townsend as Newport preserved their clean sheet to clinch all three points.

It was only a second league win in 14 matches for Nelson Jardim's side - who rise to 19th and move seven points clear of the relegation zone.

Barrow stay 18th after failing to win an away league match for the 11th game running.

Newport County head coach Nelson Jardim told BBC Sport Wales:

"A good win for everyone at the club, especially for the players. The effort they've been putting in, and some of them playing with niggles or problems.

"Focusing on the win, that's important and a massive boost to everyone.

"Sometimes you have to win ugly like we did today and if you do that and the fighting spirit is always there, then you are more close to winning."

Barrow head coach Andy Whing told BBC Radio Cumbria:

"It's absolutely criminal (to lose). We've had four or five clear cut chances today. We've had around 15 shots, they've had three.

"But we're sitting here with a 1-0 defeat after another mistake. I think it was a foul in the build-up to it.

"They've not caused us any problems at all today. We're really disappointed, we should have won the game, let's be clear, but we're a little bit fragile at the minute."
