Wrexham have kept a clean sheet in eight of their last 10 league games and have the most shutouts (22) of any side in the third tier this term

Wrexham's lead over third-placed Wycombe Wanderers in League One was cut to just one point after Phil Parkinson's side were held to a goalless draw with Wigan Athletic.

The Latics shaded what was a largely uneventful opening half, with Maleace Asamoah curling wide for the hosts at the Brick Community Stadium.

Midfielder George Dobson fired wide at the other end as both sides went into the break having failed to register a shot on target.

The visitors appealed in vain for a penalty after Ryan Longman's cross hit Luke Robinson shortly after the interval as Wrexham improved.

But Arthur Okonkwo produced a fine save to deny Asamoah shortly after the hour mark before keeping out an Owen Dale effort.

Parkinson - fresh from being named League One Manager of the Month for March - sent on Steven Fletcher, Elliot Lee, Ryan Barnett and Jack Marriott as Wrexham, who are second in League One, pushed for a winner.

But they ended the contest without a single effort on goal, although they stretched their unbeaten run to seven matches as the points were shared.

Wycombe's last-gasp victory over Stevenage at Adams Park moved the Chairboys to within a point of Wrexham with just four matches of the season remaining.

Wrexham's result also ensured Birmingham City clinched the third tier title ahead of their Football League Trophy final contest against Peterborough United at Wembley on Sunday.

Ryan Lowe's Wigan - now winless in six league games - sit 17th in the table ahead of the remaining Saturday fixtures.

Wigan Athletic boss Ryan Lowe told BBC Sounds:

"It was a good point. I'm disappointed we couldn't take all three, I thought we had good opportunities to do that.

"If you can win it, certainly don't lose it. We nullified their strengths and tried at the top end of the pitch but just lacked that bit of quality, but it wasn't for the want of trying.

"To not let them (Wrexham) have any shots on target, they're second in the league, they've spent a lot of money to get to where they're getting to and I hope they get over the line.

"But, for us, I'm always pleased when we keep a clean sheet and limit good teams to limited opportunities."

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson said:

"I thought we started reasonably well, we had good control and then we had too many sloppy moments in that first half. We gave Wigan a bit of a lift.

"I thought second half we started really well, but they always carry a threat on the break.

"We've had a moment where the referee will look at the penalty decision and realise it was pretty harsh not to get that because the lad's (Luke Robinson) got his arm in an unnatural position.

"All in all, we'll take the point today, we'd love to have been sat here with three.

"With four games to go, to still be a point clear in second is a great position to be in."
