Mark: How does Ryan Jack get in the squad, he's been crocked majority of the season. I'm an Aberdeen fan, Connor Barron is surely a better shout and we don't need Liam Kelly in the squad.

DirectorOfFoot: An absolutely remarkable turnaround in James Forrest’s season. Don’t think anyone would even have had him in the conversation two months ago.

  5. 'Johnston unlucky, Jack perhaps fortunate'published at 12:14 British Summer Time 22 May

    Steven Thompson
Former Scotland striker & BBC Sport pundit

Steve Clarke was never going to be too left field. Ryan Jack is perhaps fortunate to make it.

Ross McCrorie a good decision as he’s been playing right side for Bristol City and is a consistent performer.

Ben Doak's inclusion is a bonus a wild card, something different.

Max Johnston is unlucky not to make it.

  6. Profile: Ryan Jackpublished at 12:10 British Summer Time 22 May

Rangers midfielder Ryan Jack has not played loads of football this term having been injured for large spells. He's completed 90 minutes of first-team action just five times.

He last played against Benfica in the Europa League in March, but returned to the bench against Hearts at the weekend.

He missed out on the Euros three years ago due to injury, but Steve Clarke clearly rates him and has given him the chance to prove his fitness over the next few weeks.

Will he add to his 18 caps this summer?

  7. Forrest's fantastic renaissance storypublished at 12:06 British Summer Time 22 May

    Tom English
    BBC Scotland's chief sports writer

The afternoon of Sunday, 28 April was a significant one in Celtic's bid for the league title - and for James Forrest.

The winger scored both of Celtic's goals in a 2-1 win at Dundee that day.

What was notable was that it was only his third league start of the season. 1 November against St Mirren and 23 September against Livingston were the others.

For much of the season, despite Brendan Rodgers' gushing words later on, Forrest was a bit-part player.

Liel Abada, Daizen Maeda, Yang Hyun-Jun, Luis Palma, Mikey Johnston and Nicolas Kuhn were all all selected ahead of him in the wide areas before his storming finish to the campaign, which has now earned him a recall to the Scotland squad.

Aided enormously, of course, by the loss of Aaron Hickey and Nathan Patterson, it's a fantastic renaissance story for a player with an indomitable spirit.

  8. Profile: James Forrestpublished at 12:01 British Summer Time 22 May

    Talk about timing your run.

Since playing in the 2-0 defeat by the Czech Republic at the last Euros in 2021, James Forrest has not been in a Scotland jersey.

He'd basically disappeared from Celtic's squad as well.

Until the title run-in, where he became a starter again and netted four goals and grabbed two assists in a strong end to the campaign as Celtic won the league and booked their spot in the Scottish Cup final.

He has five international goals in 38 Scotland caps, and you would not bet against him adding to that given his game intelligence and finishing ability.

  9. Clarke poised to speak to mediapublished at 11:58 British Summer Time 22 May

Just arrived at Hampden for Steve Clarke's media conference. The fact it's being held in the auditorium suggests it's a big deal!

There's not many of us here as yet, but I expect that to change very soon.

The media conference will be streamed live on the BBC Sport Scotland website, so you won't miss a thing!

I'm not going to lie, this is all a bit exciting.

Jason: I reckon with that squad, if he proves his sharpness, Doak is going to the finals. Two players to be dropped. One of the four goalies and likely one of Armstrong or Jack depending on who's fittest.

HStyles: No space for the 'Scottish Messi' Ryan Gauld?

kerouac99: Why is Ryan Jack in the team? Surely there is someone else better. He's hardly played this season. Waste of a spot in the team.

Conor: I think Max Johnston (instead of Ralston) and Tommy Conway (instead of Forrest) would have been good additions. Other than that, solid! Bring it on.

The Bristol City right-back was one of the names widely spoken about as a possibility given the absences of Aaron Hickey and Nathan Patterson.

McCrorie, who is uncapped, moved from Aberdeen to Bristol last summer, and the first half of this campaign he was injured.

The 26-year-old returned to action in January and has made 22 appearances, 15 of them starts in the second half of the season, most of them on the right-hand side.

He can also cover centre-back and midfield. A strong and athletic player, he probably most closely replicates the profiles of Hickey and Patterson.

    What a moment for him.

  12. 'Excited to see Doak'published at 11:48 British Summer Time 22 May

    Rachel Corsie
Scotland defender & BBC Sport pundit

Very solid squad, pretty much as you’d expect from the manager.

Experience and players he already knows what he will get. Excited to see Ben Doak in there.

Here he is, the wildcard, Ben Doak. The 18-year-old born in 2005. Ouch.

He's the most exciting young Scottish player about having made the move from Celtic to Liverpool in July 2022.

He made six appearances for the Reds' first team this season before a knee injury ended his campaign.

With searing pace and the ability to ghost past players, he adds something completely different.

It'll be fascinating to see if he gets minutes in the friendlies and keeps his place for the Euros.

Right, back to the notable inclusions: James Forrest, Ross McCrorie, Ryan Jack and Ben Doak.

Why do their names stand out? Let's start with the Liverpool teenager...

At the other end of the age spectrum from who we must now always refer to as 'young Ben Doak' is Craig Gordon.

At 41 years old, he will become the oldest player ever to play for Scotland if he pulls on the jersey again.

He won his first cap in 2004, a year before Doak was born. A 20-year career with the national side. Amazing.

  17. What about Fraser?published at 11:34 British Summer Time 22 May

    Tom English

    Ryan FraserImage source, SNS

Very few Tartan Army members will be shedding a tear for Ryan Fraser today.

You'll remember Fraser pulled out of a Scotland squad for a game against Moldova in late 2021, only to be photographed training with Newcastle a day or so later.

Steve Clarke took a dim view of it at the time. Clarke has said in the recent past he has no beef with Fraser, but there's no sign of him in this squad despite the fact he's had a really good season-long loan spell with Southampton.

He started in the second leg of their play-off victory over West Brom and will be at Wembley on Sunday for the final against Leeds.

He's in form, but still out of favour. Hard to see a way back for a talented if high-maintenance player

  19. 'We have to create history' - Robertsonpublished at 11:27 British Summer Time 22 May

    Sky Sports

Scotland captain Andy Robertson on Sky Sports: "We have to be the team that creates history. Getting out the group has to be our aim. It's a tough group but we believe we can give any team a game.

"If we do that and manage to get out the group, we'll be the first Scotland team to ever do that.

"We've been trying to create our own history and our own story within a nation with a lot of good teams in the past and legends of the game.

"We're aiming to create a small part of history and we've done that by reaching two tournaments.

"But being able to qualify outside the group would be a massive step, accelerate us further and give us more belief than we've already got."
