Any Scotland players lacking in match sharpness will have the chance to prove they are fit enough in two friendlies prior to the Euros.

Steve Clarke's side will face Gibraltar in Portugal on 3 June before hosting Finland at Hampden four days later.

Not that he had much choice, but Steve Clarke must be crossing his fingers about the fitness and match sharpness of some of the players in his provisional squad.

Grant Hanley has played eight minutes since 6 March. Ryan Jack has not played first-team football since 7 March. Stuart Armstrong has not played since 20 April. And then there's Ben Doak, a flying machine when fit, which he hasn't been for a while.

Doak has not played for Liverpool since 14 December. Clarke must have had encouraging updates about him, though, or else he wouldn't be near this squad.

Anyone remember a friendly draw between Scotland and the US at Hampden in November 2005?

Andy Webster was the scorer for the Scots.

You're probably wondering why I'm bringing it up. Ben Doak was a day old.

    You're welcome.

Aside from that, it's probably as you'd expect. Right?

The other big calls are recalls for a resurgent James Forrest and Ryan Jack, who has struggled for minutes this term.

And Ross McCrorie, also uncapped, is the second pick at right-wing back.

What a moment for the Bristol City man.

Ben Doak hasn't played since December. He's uncapped.

No-one will care about that when he scores seven against Gibraltar.

    Remember, it's a 28-man provisional squad.

That will have to be cut to 26 for the finals.

ONE more minute, I hope so anyway.

    How we feeling?

    THREE minutes.

If this is how I feel about a squad announcement, I don't want to know what state I'll be in by 14 June.

  16. Pundits pick their squadspublished at 10:54 British Summer Time 22 May

The BBC pundits have made their Scotland squad picks - you've got five minutes or so to have a swatch.

Should resurgent Celtic winger James Forrest earn a recall? What about the right-back dilemma?

Should there be a fourth forward? It's all there...

  18. What about the young team?published at 10:50 British Summer Time 22 May

Let us rewind three years when Steve Clarke named his Euro 2020 set-up.

Injuries and an increased squad size to 26 opened the door for young trio Billy Gilmour, Nathan Patterson and David Turnbull to feature as surprise entries in the Scotland squad.

Major tournament experience was certainly beneficial to Gilmour and Patterson, who have since gone on to gain a combined 34 caps, so perhaps Clarke will look to repeat that.

If he was to, who would be at the front of the line? Recent reports suggest Aberdeen midfielder Connor Barron and Liverpool forward Ben Doak are in his thoughts.

Teenager Doak, lightning quick and fearless, certainly offers Clarke a different profile. He has only played six games for the Anfield side this term and has not featured since suffering a serious injury in December, but he recently returned to training.

Bristol City striker Tommy Conway, 21, is another potential option. He has netted 12 club goals this season, two of which came in the FA Cup against West Ham.

That tally is almost double the amount scored by fellow Championship striker Dykes, who has seven this term for Queens Park Rangers.

    Thirteen minutes to go. Thirteen.

  20. So what about the right-backs?published at 10:45 British Summer Time 22 May

Surely two of the 28 spots have to go to right-backs?

Anthony Ralston has featured in the last two squads in the absence of Aaron Hickey, so you have to imagine he's one.

The other is up for debate. Ross McCrorie? Recalls for Liam Palmer or Stephen O'Donnell? Tino Livramento feels like a longshot.

But what about Max Johnston? The Sturm Graz full-back has had limited minutes in Austria but claimed a league and cup double in his debut season.

Richard Foster, who worked with Johnston at Motherwell, feels the 20-year-old could be the answer.

"He came back to Motherwell and he transformed himself into a machine," Foster said on the Scottish Football Podcast.

"He was brilliant - great pace, great energy, great change of direction and change of speed.

"Technically, he's good enough, but I still think there's more improvement from him."
