Tuchel is a top, top coach. The majority of what happens in the England setup we don't see, all we see is the starters on the pitch for 90 minutes. If Tuchel thinks Henderson brings a lot to the training camps and the squad off-field, if he thinks he will make an impact on our ability to win the World Cup, I'm behind him. Wharton and Mainoo's time will come, we don't need to include every promising youngster in the England squad as soon as they show promise at their club. Let them get some experience and play for England at their peak when they can deal with our hefty expectations.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola on Phil Foden's form and his omission form the England squad: "That is true [about mental fatigue]. Phil has said that. We want to help him and that’s the most important thing. He needs rest and then he will come back. I want to help him. I don’t care about his performance, I just want him to feel good because then the rest will come in an easy way."

"Long time he has been struggling with his ankle. What happens with the international team is down to Thomas Tuchel."

Newcastle United's Dan Burn has been picked with once again by Thomas Tuchel as the towering defender is involved in the latest iteration of the England squad. However, there were calls for Everton's rising young defender Jarrad Branthwaite to be included as well but Tuchel opted against.

For the avoidance of any doubt, Marcus Rashford's omission is down to the hamstring injury that ended his season.

Rashford commenced a warm weather rehab programme in Dubai with a view to accelerating the recovery process in hope of making the England games.

But the games have arrived too early for Rashford.

Toney is going to be an answer to who to play if Kane is injured or who can offer a plan b to Kane. He is never going to be the first choice striker in a crucial game, but a player you can reliably count on and perhaps start a third qualifing game to cruise past a mediocre opposition team and rest Kane. It is certainly worth evaluating Toney in this capacity and assessing his quality after playing in Saudi Arabia. There aren’t many other alternatives.

    • He also has six assists this campaign in all competitions
    • Toney has scored two or more goals in a game on eight different occasions

  11. Chelsea boss Maresca on England squadpublished at 12:27 British Summer Time

    England squad announcement

    Chelsea

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca spoke on the England squad announcement and their upcoming fixtures in his press conference earlier today.

"England squad? I didn't speak with one of them, and I've said many times before that we are happy with our players being in their national teams because they represent their country and club also.

"From the 10th [when the international break ends] to the 15th [when Chelsea kick off at the Club World Cup] there is five days. The problem is that we have a game on Sunday and Wednesday - and it is a European final.

"I am not thinking about next season. I am thinking about the next two games. I think for sure there can be players, because the amount of games that they have, can be injured or tired. Then, we will see how we need to behave."

Henderson shouldn't be anywhere near this squad; there are better options in the same position and he's clearly in the twilight of his career not even playing in the biggest leads after an ill fated cash grab. Horrible decision. If I was Wharton I'd be livid.

  14. Henderson sets the tone - but will he play?published at 12:13 British Summer Time

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

England head coach Thomas Tuchel says veteran Jordan Henderson "takes care of all of the standards" in training.

All very laudable, but you would hope that is a given in an England camp full of quality and experience.

Will he play? Does he deserve to be in ahead of Crystal Palace's outstanding Adam Wharton? Wharton, for now, takes his talents to England's under-21 squad.

Tuchel, as he always does whether you agree with his choices or not, made his reasoning very clear. He once again cut a very impressive figure.

  15. Tuchel impressively explains his decisionspublished at 12:08 British Summer Time

    Alex Howell
BBC football news reporter at Wembley Stadium

England manager Thomas Tuchel was again impressive as he justified the reasons for his selections in his latest squad.

There were some shocks in this 26 man group, as with Tuchel's first but the England boss again was extremely impressive with his explanations.

Although some may not agree with his selections, Tuchel gives you a solid points for his thinking.

The press conference was a lot more lowkey than the last at Wembley when Tuchel named his first squad.

The fixtures are also not high profile with matches against Andorra and a friendly against Senegal but Tuchel again pressed home the importance of these games for him.

Tuchel again reminded the media that he only had five camps with his players before the World Cup and what message would it send to the group if he let some leave early for the Club World Cup.

Excellent squad. I trust Tuchel way more than I ever did Southgate and I like how it’s shaping up. Brave choice to bring in Ivan Toney, and Henderson is another great selection. I hope he starts him. It’s silly when people get so so tribal about their club players. This is the national team. Show some perspective!

To all the Tuchel haters, he won the Champions League with a very young team so give him a break and time, personally I don't think an 18 month contract is long enough, hence the squads he picking.

  17. Recap: Tuchel's best bitspublished at 12:00 British Summer Time

    England

England manager Thomas Tuchel faced the media this morning to answer questions on his second England squad.

It was another impressive showing from Tuchel who remained cool, calm and collected throughout while giving in-depth explanations to everything thrown his way.

Here are the top lines from his news conference:

That is your lot from England manager Thomas Tuchel.

I reckon I'd believe him if he told me the sky was green, you know.

There may be questions over some of his selections but you can't question the man's way with words.

  19. 'Henderson sets the standards'published at 11:54 British Summer Time

    England

England boss Thomas Tuchel on Jordan Henderson being picked: "If we have a training exercise with different groups and you have a group with Jordan you can turn your back you don't need to watch. He will take care of all the standards in the group. It may be a possession game, a passing exercise, maybe the warm up but you don't need to take care of this group because Jordan takes care of it. He sets the standards. He is a natural leader and the others follow. That is why he is with us. He is doing this in an impressive way and still playing at a decent level. That is why there was not a thought to drop him."

On if he gets frustrated at people questioning Henderson being picked: "I can understand it but once you meet Jordan and speak to him it is such an obvious choice. Maybe your perception seems far away from mine but I can understand the question. It is not Adam Wharton versus Jordan Henderson. What Jordan brings to the group an under-21 player cannot bring. It is just impossible from personality and experience.

"Jordan is also more than happy to accept the challenge and he wants no gifts and presents."

  20. 'The young players have a winning mentality'published at 11:51 British Summer Time

    England

More from Thomas Tuchel on players involved in Under-21s: "This is the last chance for them to be picked in the Under-21s. From September they fight for a place in the national team and fight against big, big players. They will emrbace playing the Euros with the Under-21s, that is what we want for them, to take a big responsibility.

"Newcastle won the Carabao Cup, Palace won the FA Cup and Spurs won the Europa League so a lot of players for them were involved in winning titles who are not used to winning titles so it is a big boost for us because they showed they had a winning mentality and they can bring it over the line no matter what.

"Being with the Under-21s will play a huge part in their development."
