Chelsea have had a bit of an up and down season. At one point they looked potential title challengers, then had a fair bit of a dip but are now battling firmly for a Champions League place.

They are well represented in this England squad with five players - Reece James, Trevoh Chalobah, Levi Colwill, Cole Palmer and Noni Madueke.

It means a pretty busy schedule ahead for them:

    • 25 May: Final Premier League games
    • 28 May: Conference League final: Chelsea v Real Betis
    • 4-10 June: Six-day England camp including games on 7 June and 10 June
    • 15 June-13 July: Club World Cup, including Manchester City, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid, plus others
    • 16 June: Chelsea play their first Club World Cup game.

Poor Thomas Tuchel. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. "Why has he included X?". "Why isn't X included?". He has a limited squad of which only 11 can be on the field at a given time. Just support the team!

    Julian

If squads were ‘pick by numbers’ there would be no strategy in it, would there? People already calling time on Tuchel is farcical given his managerial prowess. Give him his time, and judge his decisions based on performances in big competitions.

1976 is the last time an England squad did not include a player from Manchester United, Kevin.

If we're being very technical, the one in November didn't due to Kobbie Mainoo dropping out through injury - but he was included in the initial squad.

Thomas Tuchel's first squad in March included Marcus Rashford, who is on loan at Aston Villa from Manchester United.

Can anyone remember the last time an England squad did not include a Man U player?? Our season just keeps on giving!

  6. Tuchel decides against Maguire againpublished at 10:40 British Summer Time

    England squad announcement

With the likes of Phil Foden, Marcus Rashford and Harry Maguire not included, this England squad sees no Manchester-based players called up at all.

Both Foden and Rashford have injury issues. Maguire, meanwhile, was also not named in Thomas Tuchel's first squad announcement in March.

“I spoke to all of the players who were not on the list to give my direct feedback on my decision,” Tuchel said at that time, when asked about Maguire. , external

“It was a close decision. We chose Marc Guéhi and Ezri Konsa. At the moment, I think they are a little bit in a better rhythm and deserve to be with us. Two right-footers in central defence and the rest were left-footers in the centre of defence.

“The second reason was that Harry was not fit when we did the nomination. It was presumed that he can play but I didn’t want to take the risk to nominate the player which we then have to take care [with].

“Harry knows that. It’s not so easy for him at the club at the moment. He plays in a back three on top of it but he’s a top professional and he’s very important for England. He took it unbelievably well. He wrote me messages to wish us good luck and you see what a person he is. He is a top guy and he will always be in contention.”

  7. Bowen unlucky to miss out?published at 10:37 British Summer Time

    England squad announcement

    Karan Vinod
    BBC Sport Journalist

West Ham talisman Jarrod Bowen find himself missing out on the latest England squad announced by Thomas Tuchel. The forward has scored 12 goals in the Premier League this season but finds the likes of Noni Madueke, Ivan Toney and others selected ahead of him.

Bowen has scored four game-winning goals this season in the league for West Ham and has been crucial in ensuring the London club wasn't embroiled in a relegation battle. In 33 league games, the forward has a shooting accuracy of 62.5% (excluding blocks) and a conversion rate of 21.43%.

These numbers are very good considering how bad West Ham have been this season. Bowen perhaps should consider himself unlucky to miss out?

All quite indicative of how we've missed our chance on the world stage - looks incredibly lightweight at the back, and selecting from the Saudi league not even funny. Andorra won't pose any problems, but this is clearly the 'sticking-plaster' selection approach of a man who knows he's just an interim appointment.

    Mark, York

Maybe Tuchel only lasts 18 months anyway because of his ridiculous decision-making. It seems he is more interested in showing he's the boss than doing what's best for England now and in the future. Get rid while we still have time.

  9. Guehi's omission linked to eye injurypublished at 10:30 British Summer Time

Marc Guehi's omission from the England squad is connected to the eye injury he suffered in the FA Cup final.

BBC Sport can reveal that Tuchel phoned Guehi on Thursday to explain that he didn't want to risk re-injuring his eye.

Tuchel made clear to the Crystal Palace captain that he remains vital to his plans but felt he needed to focus on recovering from the eye issue.

Guehi spent Saturday night in hospital with a suspected fractured eye socket, though tests later confirmed he had escaped a crack and the injury was severe bruising.

  10. Tuchel with explaining to dopublished at 10:27 British Summer Time

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

England head coach Thomas Tuchel raised a few eyebrows with his first squad - and it is fair to say they will be heading skywards again after his latest selection.

Jarrod Bowen has been a stand-out in West Ham United's dismal season but misses out, while Ajax's former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson retains his place, even though he is 35 next month.

Newcastle United's Jacob Murphy has also pushed himself into contention with an outstanding season, so there will be disappointment on Tyneside at his absence.

The eye injury Marc Guehi sustained in the FA Cup Final win against Manchester City means he is being treated with caution, while team-mate Adam Wharton - who also sustained a head injury at Wembley - is set to be named in England's under-21 squad

There will be plenty, though, will feel his place is now with senior party.

Ivan Toney, meanwhile, has proved that playing in the Saudi Pro League does not mean out of sight is out of mind for Tuchel.

No Jared Branthwaite? He has been excellent all season. Surely he is a shoe in for the future, why not have him play now and get a feel for his international credentials?

    Scott

I have no idea how Jarrad Branthwaite hasn’t made the squad! Been outstanding for everton all season and a big part in our 11 clean sheets. Joke!

Former Brentford talisman Ivan Toney has been recalled to the England squad. That's the big line of the day.

The forward now plays in the Saudi Pro League and is second in the scoring charts behind Cristiano Ronaldo. Let's have a look at his England career so far:

    • Made his debut against Ukraine in 2023 as a substitute
    • The forward's first goal for the national team came in a 2-2 draw against Belgium in 2024
    • Toney scored a no-look penalty against Switzerland in Euro 2024 as England won on penalties

An incredible season with Crystal Palace and then Chelsea have earned Trevoh Chalobah his first England call-up.

He is the only uncapped outfield member of Thomas Tuchel's second England squad.

    • Chalobah has 31 successful tackles this season
    • The defender has recorded 104 clearances in this campaign
    • Chalobah has won 45 aerial battles
    • He is yet to concede a penalty and has scored zero own goals

How has Tuchel left Marc Guehi and Adam Wharton out of the England squad given the season's they've had, culminating in winning the FA Cup ? Utterly ridiculous.

    Anon

Why on earth is Henderson included over Adam Wharton? Makes absolutely no sense and not a good look for Tuchel

Poor Jarrod Bowen. Scoring goals in a terrible West Ham side. Deemed a worse option than Madueke who isn't even guaranteed a start at Chelsea.

    Kieran, Essex

No Jarrod Bowen is comical. 4 goals and 2 assists in his last 5 games, in a team that is struggling at the wrong end of the table. Tuchel prioritising Chelsea players again, despite their upcoming Club World Cup campaign. I wonder why…

    Joe, London

Jarrod Bowen has been one of the few highlights for us in the past year, even amidst a toothless attack he is bagging both goals and assists, and even as a backup to Saka he is an extremely pragmatic, to the point option. On form I'd argue we should be seeing him over Cole Palmer.

  18. White misses outpublished at 10:06 British Summer Time

    England squad announcement

There were suggestions that Ben White was in line to earn his fifth England cap but first since 2022, however he has not been included in the squad.

Here's a timeline of his England career to date.

25 May 2021: White named in Gareth Southgate's England squad for Euro 2020 (played in 2021 after being postponed because of the Covid-19 pandemic)

2 June 2021: Having never previously played for England at any level, White made his debut as a substitute in a 1-0 friendly win against Austria. Having initially been cut from the Euro 2020 squad, he was brought back in for the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold but unused throughout the tournament.

29 March 2022: White starts in a 3-0 friendly win against Ivory Coast, earning his fourth cap for his country. That was to be his last appearance for England.

10 November 2022: White is named in the 2022 World Cup England squad but on 30 November he was allowed to leave for personal reasons.

14 March 2024: Southgate reveals that White had made himself unavailable selection for friendlies in March last year, but said the 'door was always open' for his return.

14 March 2025: Thomas Tuchel reveals that White is keen to make a return to the England squad.

Ivan Toney undoubtedly the main talking point.

Lots of shouts for Jacob Murphy this morning but no call-up for him.

Phil Foden, Tino Livramento and Jarrod Bowen all miss out but Morgan Gibbs-White, Noni Madueke and Trevoh Chalobah all in.

Lots to dissect. Lots to discuss.
