John: Hi Phil, do you think Everton will be able to sign the players they need - namely a right-back, winger, striker and midfielder - to complete the team before the window closes?

Phil: Hello, John. Having been at Elland Road last night to watch a truly awful Everton performance, they certainly need to act on all of those things.

David Moyes has publicly voiced concerns about lack of signings, although he started with Jack Grealish on the bench, along with new France Under-21 striker Thierno Barry.

Everton’s squad looked badly under-cooked - I could not believe now much fitter Leeds United looked - and under-strength.

The club is about to enter a new era at a new stadium with new owners, so they need to get those players in to make sure the team can give the sort of performances to engender optimism, not what the travelling fans saw last night.

Time is running out, though, and there is so much work to do. Definitely a concern.

Jason: Hi Phil, I am surprised a striker of Lautaro Martinez’s quality doesn’t get a mention as a Premier League target. I’d love him at Newcastle. Thoughts?

Phil: Hello, Jason. I think he has been mentioned with the Premier League a few times but nothing has ever materialised. He is a class act and plenty would love him but he currently seems happy at Inter Milan.

This site states that revenue is key to succeeding under PSR. Problem is you need success to generate revenue (prize money and sponsors) and you can’t get this because of PSR. The system has been created to prevent competition.

Rufus: Hi Phil. What positions do Chelsea need to strengthen up on in this transfer window if they are to compete for the title?

Phil: Afternoon, Rufus. I still think they need a better goalkeeper than Robert Sanchez and a consistent goalscoring striker, which is a really odd thing to say given the money that has been spent.

Chelsea have got a really strong squad, though, and I can certainly see them in the top four and challenging for a cup.

Phil McNulty Q&A - Man Utd performance against Arsenal 'offered real hope'published at 15:50 BST 19 August

Click 'Get Involved' at the top of this page to pose a question

Chris: Afternoon Phil, having watched Manchester United on Sunday, I was impressed with both Dorgu and Dalot. There is an emphasis on the wing-backs for Manchester United. Do you think they carry enough of an attacking threat and is there strength in depth in those positions for United?

Phil: Hi, Chris. They certainly carried a threat on Sunday. I actually thought that, despite the result, that was a United display that offered real hope. They were better than Arsenal for long periods, with new forwards Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo looking class acts. It will be intriguing to see how the link with Benjamin Sesko works, but I thought there was a lot to encourage Ruben Amorim – apart from the goalkeeper.

  6. 'It takes time to settle in'published at 15:49 BST 19 August

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on Football Daily

With [Viktor] Gyokeres the instant judgment is typical. People are making their mind up after an hour.

Normally, when players go to a new club some players fit in better than others. It takes time to settle in.

In the final third it’s about combination, understanding of how players are going to link up and play with each other and I think he didn’t get any service. [Bukayo] Saka had a pretty poor game, [Gabriel] Martinelli didn’t really look for him.

Click 'Get Involved' at the top of this page to pose a question

Guy: I Phil, do you think that Arsenal just need more time to gel or are more transfers required in this window? The performance against Utd wasn't good enough.

Phil: Hello, Guy. It was not a great performance, but it was a resilient one and a win away at Manchester United on the opening day of the season constitutes a very, very good start.

I’m sure once Viktor Gyokores and Martin Zubimendi are integrated you will see improvements, but take the win. It was an old-fashioned grinder of an Arsenal performance. Maybe the flourishes will come on other occasions.

Matt, Manchester: Alex in London is very much missing the point here. For ambitious clubs who are not already generating loads of income, the stark choice is between not spending (and thus curbing their own ambitions) or taking some calculated gambles. The very nub of why PSR isn't fit for purpose.

Phil McNulty Q&A - Forest should be looking at 'European places' this seasonpublished at 15:43 BST 19 August

Click 'Get Involved' at the top of this page to pose a question

Mitchel: Hi Phil, if Forest pull off the Douglas Luiz deal, what is stopping them from challenging for a Champions League finish? A midfield three of Luiz, Elliot Anderson and Morgan Gibbs-White is frightening and there aren't many better in the PL, do you agree?

Phil: Afternoon, Mitchel. That would certainly make a top-class trio, and that is before you get to all the other signings Forest have made this summer. I certainly think Forest should be looking at the European places, although I think the Champions League might, like last season, be just beyond them.

Don’t tell Evangelos Marinakis that, though. He will definitely want to challenge for the Champions League places. He has certainly given Nuno Espirito Santo the tools to do the job.

Alfie: Hi Phil, any news on Arsenal selling players? We've spent a lot of money but have only made £7m in player sales, which has never been our forte.

Phil: Not as yet, Alfie, although I can see Arsenal letting one or two players go before the window closes to bring some cash in after this summer’s big outlay on signings.

Phil McNulty Q&A - Gravenberch 'will make huge difference' to Liverpool's midfieldpublished at 15:32 BST 19 August

Liverpool midfielder Ryan GravenberchImage source, Getty Images

Colin: Hi Phil, in your view, what tactical adjustments do Liverpool need to focus on to stay close to Manchester City and Arsenal? Judging by the goals they conceded against Bournemouth goals, do they have the right personnel or need to buy again?

Phil: The main flaw we have seen in Liverpool’s performances in the Community Shield loss to Crystal Palace and win at home to Bournemouth is that they seem a lot more open than they were last season. They can be got at, which was rarely the case under Arne Slot in his opening campaign as manager.

I think much of this can be put down to the absence of Ryan Gravenberch, who was outstanding as a stabilising influence in midfield last season. They also need to adjust to two attacking full-backs in Jeremie Frimpong and Milok Kerkez, who have left them vulnerable on the flanks.

It will be interesting to see how and when Andy Robertson and Conor Bradley are utilised in the weeks ahead.

Arne Slot needs to get that midfield balance right while accommodating Florian Wirtz in the "10" position, but Gravenberch will make a huge difference.

As for buying again, I certainly think they need another central defender, with Marc Guehi the player earmarked, it seems.

Slot will know all of this and I’m sure he will strike a successful balance.

Phil McNulty Q&A - Would be 'refreshing' to see 'bolder approach' from teamspublished at 15:28 BST 19 August

Click 'Get Involved' at the top of this page to pose a question

Laura: Last season there seemed to be very few clean sheets in the Premier League, but this opening weekend nine teams failed to score. Do you think this will be an ongoing trend, or will we see more goals as new signings gel with their teams?

Phil: Afternoon, Laura. It might just be a trick of the first weekend, but I just wonder whether we will see a bolder approach from one or two teams this season. Lots of observers claimed teams were over-coached and too rigid in their structures. Could it be that is changing?

Maybe that’s wishful thinking on my part, but it would be so refreshing to see.

Tottenham's Mohammed KudusImage source, Getty Images

Mike: Hi Phil, is Kudus slowly becoming the buy of the season? He was outstanding against PSG and Burnley and his first touch and work-rate were the best I saw in all the opening games. What is your opinion?

Phil: Steady on, Mike. He’s only played one league game. He was certainly impressive, as he was in the Uefa Super Cup Final against Paris St-Germain.

If he can achieve consistency he will be a very good signing. He’s a real threat, has bags of ability and the potential to be a top-class acquisition, but let’s wait on 'buy of the season', though.

  15. Will Eze leave Palace?published at 15:22 BST 19 August

It's been a complicated few days in relation to the future of Eberechi Eze at Crystal Palace, so let's try and clear things up.

Sami Mokbel, BBC Sport's senior football correspondent, has said that Spurs and Palace are currently in discussions over a fee for Eze, but as things stand there is no agreement.

There are one or two complications in that Palace will only sanction a deal if they can get one or two forwards across the line first.

Eze, 27, played in Palace's season opener against Chelsea on Sunday and the Independent has reported, external that a deal between the two clubs is close as Spurs pursue a fee of around £55m and look to secure a payment structure with Palace.

The Eagles host Norwegian side Fredrikstad at Selhurst Park on Thursday in the Uefa Conference League.

Tim: Hi Phil, if Spurs sign Eze and can keep Richarlison fit, do you think a top-four place is possible or do they need more squad depth?

Phil: Hello, Tim. Eze would be a superb signing and we all know Richarlison has great quality if he can stay fit.

Top four should be the ambition for Spurs, although I just think that might be too much of a leap from 17th last season. I certainly expect better things - a challenge for the European places and another cup.
