Ben: Hi Phil, still early very days but are Chelsea’s performances going to suffer after their Club World Cup exploits and lack of pre-season? They looked off the pace against Crystal Palace! Thanks

Phil: Afternoon, Ben. Early days as you say, so would not rush to judgement yet. It will be interesting to see if those exertions do take a toll later in the campaign – but Chelsea have enough players to offer rest and recuperation at the right times. And let's not forget that Crystal Palace are difficult opponents, a very decent side.

Umayer: With Jason Sancho reportedly looking to explore other options after rejecting Roma, what’s next for him? Why would you reject a massive club where you can escape the media scrutiny and just play football! Under Gasperini too.

Phil: Hello, Umayer. This is a question you would have to ask Jadon Sancho because the prospect of Roma and playing under Gian Piero Gasperini is surely an enticing one. At the moment his career is at a crossroads... again.

I absolutely love Matheus Cunha. I think he is an outstanding footballer and I think going to a huge club like United you have to play for with no fear and I think he does that every time he steps onto the pitch.

I played against him last season and he doesn’t stop. He has the appetite to do well and make things happen. He can score goals. I think he’s a fantastic signing for Manchester United.

He has a hint of Suarez in him. Remember when Suarez used to dribble with the ball and used to bounce between players? He did it when he broke through Arsenal's backline.

Mark: Hi Phil, just wanted your thoughts on how you thought Cunha and Mbeumo played on Sunday? As a Manchester United fan, I thought they were excellent, and with Sesko the three can hopefully get us the goals required for a push for one of the European places.

Phil: I totally agree, Mark. I thought both Cunha and Mbeumo were top class. Mbeumo’s touch was superb while Cunha has bags of skill and threat. They looked two excellent acquisitions and it will be really interesting to see how they go on playing either side of Sesko.

I think Manchester United someone need who plays on the edge.

I spoke to the Wolves boys about Matheus Cunha and they didn’t mind a suspension here and there, because, and it sounds really stupid but it’s because of what he brings to games, and how he could help win those games.

Last season for Wolves, Matheus Cunha registered 13 yellows and one red card.

He also missed six matches in total after being banned for incidents against Ipswich in December and Bournemouth in an FA Cup tie in March.

However, by offering to pay for some new glasses for the Ipswich security staff member after a clash, he shortened his ban and reduced the fine.

Kyle: Hi Phil, who has the leverage in the Garnacho situation, Manchester United or Chelsea? Given he wasn't selected for Argentina and has three years to run on his deal, surely he realises he needs to play to be in contention for World Cup selection and open doors to other suitors?

Phil: Hi, Kyle. Great question, as Manchester United clearly want Garnacho out and he wants to leave. Maybe leverage just slightly with Chelsea but this does not mean United should be handing them out any gifts.

I do think this will happen before the window closes as it is a deal that suits all parties – at the right price of course.

John: Hi Phil. How important is it that Liverpool sign another centre back who can step in for Virgil van Dijk over a long campaign?

Phil: Hello, John. Very important, with Jarell Quansah sold and Joe Gomez, unfortunately, too often injured. There is also a question mark over Ibrahim Konate’s future as he is yet to sign a new contract.

An injury to Van Dijk would be seriously damaging, so I’m sure this is something Liverpool are looking at, with talks having already been held about a deal for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi.

I expect Liverpool to sign a central defender before the window closes.

Jamie (unhappy Hammer): Hi Phil, West Ham United clearly need some legs in midfield, we are so slow! Any ideas who we could be looking for in the engine room? We need at least two signings, if not three!

Phil: Hello, Jamie. Not sure who they have in mind specifically but you are absolutely right about the midfield. It lacked legs and energy against Sunderland, pre-requisites at all times but especially when you go to a newly-promoted team on the first day of the season.

West Ham were overpowered and over-run on a very chastening day for manager Graham Potter.

I am sure it was a display that increased the urgency of owners and manager to get players in – at least I hope it was.

Wrexham are closing in on another high-profile signing with the Championship club looking to finalise a deal for Manchester City defender Callum Doyle.

Reports suggest Wrexham have agreed a fee which could rise to £8m for the England Under-21 international.

Manchester-born Doyle, 21, is a product of the City academy, though he has never played for the first team having spent the last four seasons out on loan.

Doyle, who will give Wrexham a left-sided option in central defence, has had loan spells at Sunderland, Coventry City, Leicester City and Norwich City in previous years, amassing 158 club games and two goals.

He has also played for England at various age-grade levels, though he was not part of the squad which won this summer's European Under-21 Championship.

  12. Who has made Troy's Premier League team of the week?published at 12:40 British Summer Time

Tijjani Reijnders' contribution for Manchester City in their 4-0 win over Wolves was enough to earn a place in Troy Deeney's first team of the week of the new Premier League season.

The Netherlands midfielder is one of three debutants to feature in Troy's team, alongside team-mate Rayan Ait-Nouri and Spurs' Mohammed Kudus.

Manchester City's 27-year-old Netherlands midfielder, Tijjani Reijnders, contributed a goal and an assist in Saturday's victory over Wolves at Molineux.

Reijnders is only the second City player to both score and provide a goal on his Premier League debut, after Sergio Aguero, who contributed two goals and an assist in a 4-0 win over Swansea in their opening game of the 2011-12 season.

Brilliant display from Tijjani Reijnders. Manchester City blew Wolves away, I thought they were really impressive and he was the most impressive part of that.

Statman Dave told me he played very well against Palermo.

He scored a couple of goals, his forward runs into the box were excellent, and Dave said you had to watch out for him.

His goal tally at Milan last season was very good, he’s durable and what a start he’s made. An area of concern last season in that midfield with [Kevin] de Bruyne and [Ilkay] Gundogan was that they lacked legs. Now, Reijnders doesn’t just have legs, he’s a dribbler, he’s a passer and what a debut he had.

Harry: Hi Phil, with the opening round of matches all played, I'm curious as to whether there were any individual performances or score lines which came as a surprise to you? Pleasantly or otherwise.

Phil: Sunderland’s 3-0 win over West Ham United was a real stand-out, while the Hammers were surprisingly poor - as were Everton in their loss at Leeds United.

If we are looking for a stellar performance that opened the eyes, I would say Tijjani Reijnders for Manchester City at Wolves. He was just magnificent, scoring one goal and creating two others.

Steve: Phil, assuming Isak won't play again for Newcastle, which available strikers should Newcastle target who would fit their style and improve under Eddie Howe?

Phil: Wissa would be a good addition, while eyes have been cast at Jorgen Strand Larsen at Wolves. Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson has also been touted, and while he is inconsistent he has talent and we have seen how Eddie Howe can improve players from raw materials.

Geoff: On Isak. Would a solution be for a sale at £110m but he gets loaned back to Newcastle for the rest of the season? The player gets the wage increase, Newcastle get the extra year they want. Liverpool get the player at the fee. Worked for Mamardashvili deal.

Phil: Morning, Geoff. Won’t be happening. Just imagine Alexander Isak going back to Newcastle United with a move to Liverpool sorted for next summer? Sooner him than me.

    Total non-starter in all respects.

  19. Why do Newcastle need a striker?published at 11:57 British Summer Time

    Anthony GordonImage source, Getty Images

During Saturday's draw against Aston Villa, it was Anthony Gordon who played through the middle as Eddie Howe's side failed to find the back of the net against 10 men, following Ezri Konsa's second-half red card.

Will Osula - the Magpies' only recognised first-team striker, other than Alexander Isak - came on to the pitch in the 90th minute in place of Harvey Barnes.

Whilst it was Gordon's run in behind the Villa defence that saw Konsa dismissed, Newcastle lacked a cutting edge in the final third.

Yoane Wissa's 19 Premier League goals for Brentford last season suggest a player of his quality could prove to be a useful replacement, should Isak leave the club.

"I worked really hard with him last year to try and find goals. Seven of his 19 goals last year came from set pieces.

"He owes me really, so he shouldn't be going anywhere, to be blunt!"
