Jamie (unhappy Hammer): Hi Phil, West Ham United clearly need some legs in midfield, we are so slow! Any ideas who we could be looking for in the engine room? We need at least two signings, if not three!

Phil: Hello, Jamie. Not sure who they have in mind specifically but you are absolutely right about the midfield. It lacked legs and energy against Sunderland, pre-requisites at all times but especially when you go to a newly-promoted team on the first day of the season.

West Ham were overpowered and over-run on a very chastening day for manager Graham Potter.

I am sure it was a display that increased the urgency of owners and manager to get players in – at least I hope it was.

Wrexham have already brought in nine new players since securing promotion from League One.

Should they complete the signing of Callum Doyle they would overtake Norwich to become the highest spenders in the Championship this summer.

According to TransferMarkt, external, the reported £8m would put them at £26.59m for the summer with nothing recouped in sales, whereas the Canaries have spent £21.5m but managed to bring in a shade over £24m from sales.

These are the deals the North Walians have completed to this point...

    • Ryan Hardie - from Plymouth - £0.7m
    • Danny Ward - from Leicester - Free
    • Liberato Cacace - from Empoli - £2.2m
    • Kieffer Moore - from Sheffield United - £2m
    • Nathan Broadhead - from Ipswich - £7.5m
    • Josh Windass - from Sheffield Wednesday - Free
    • Conor Coady - from Leicester - £2m
    • Lewis O'Brien - from Nottingham Forest - £3m
    • George Thomason - from Bolton - £1.2m

Wrexham are closing in on another high-profile signing with the Championship club looking to finalise a deal for Manchester City defender Callum Doyle.

Reports suggest Wrexham have agreed a fee which could rise to £8m for the England Under-21 international.

Manchester-born Doyle, 21, is a product of the City academy, though he has never played for the first team having spent the last four seasons out on loan.

Doyle, who will give Wrexham a left-sided option in central defence, has had loan spells at Sunderland, Coventry City, Leicester City and Norwich City in previous years, amassing 158 club games and two goals.

He has also played for England at various age-grade levels, though he was not part of the squad which won this summer's European Under-21 Championship.

  4. Who has made Troy's Premier League team of the week?published at 12:40 British Summer Time

Tijjani Reijnders' contribution for Manchester City in their 4-0 win over Wolves was enough to earn a place in Troy Deeney's first team of the week of the new Premier League season.

The Netherlands midfielder is one of three debutants to feature in Troy's team, alongside team-mate Rayan Ait-Nouri and Spurs' Mohammed Kudus.

Manchester City's 27-year-old Netherlands midfielder, Tijjani Reijnders, contributed a goal and an assist in Saturday's victory over Wolves at Molineux.

Reijnders is only the second City player to both score and provide a goal on his Premier League debut, after Sergio Aguero, who contributed two goals and an assist in a 4-0 win over Swansea in their opening game of the 2011-12 season.

Brilliant display from Tijjani Reijnders. Manchester City blew Wolves away, I thought they were really impressive and he was the most impressive part of that.

Statman Dave told me he played very well against Palermo.

He scored a couple of goals, his forward runs into the box were excellent, and Dave said you had to watch out for him.

His goal tally at Milan last season was very good, he’s durable and what a start he’s made. An area of concern last season in that midfield with [Kevin] de Bruyne and [Ilkay] Gundogan was that they lacked legs. Now, Reijnders doesn’t just have legs, he’s a dribbler, he’s a passer and what a debut he had.

Harry: Hi Phil, with the opening round of matches all played, I'm curious as to whether there were any individual performances or score lines which came as a surprise to you? Pleasantly or otherwise.

Phil: Sunderland’s 3-0 win over West Ham United was a real stand-out, while the Hammers were surprisingly poor - as were Everton in their loss at Leeds United.

If we are looking for a stellar performance that opened the eyes, I would say Tijjani Reijnders for Manchester City at Wolves. He was just magnificent, scoring one goal and creating two others.

Steve: Phil, assuming Isak won't play again for Newcastle, which available strikers should Newcastle target who would fit their style and improve under Eddie Howe?

Phil: Wissa would be a good addition, while eyes have been cast at Jorgen Strand Larsen at Wolves. Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson has also been touted, and while he is inconsistent he has talent and we have seen how Eddie Howe can improve players from raw materials.

Geoff: On Isak. Would a solution be for a sale at £110m but he gets loaned back to Newcastle for the rest of the season? The player gets the wage increase, Newcastle get the extra year they want. Liverpool get the player at the fee. Worked for Mamardashvili deal.

Phil: Morning, Geoff. Won’t be happening. Just imagine Alexander Isak going back to Newcastle United with a move to Liverpool sorted for next summer? Sooner him than me.

    Total non-starter in all respects.

  11. Why do Newcastle need a striker?published at 11:57 British Summer Time

    Anthony GordonImage source, Getty Images

During Saturday's draw against Aston Villa, it was Anthony Gordon who played through the middle as Eddie Howe's side failed to find the back of the net against 10 men, following Ezri Konsa's second-half red card.

Will Osula - the Magpies' only recognised first-team striker, other than Alexander Isak - came on to the pitch in the 90th minute in place of Harvey Barnes.

Whilst it was Gordon's run in behind the Villa defence that saw Konsa dismissed, Newcastle lacked a cutting edge in the final third.

Yoane Wissa's 19 Premier League goals for Brentford last season suggest a player of his quality could prove to be a useful replacement, should Isak leave the club.

As the Yoanne Wissa transfer saga continues, Keith Andrews sent a strong message to his striker following Brentford's 3-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest.

Speaking to Talksport,, external Andrews said: "I have got a good relationship with Wiss.

"I worked really hard with him last year to try and find goals. Seven of his 19 goals last year came from set pieces.

"He owes me really, so he shouldn't be going anywhere, to be blunt!"

As mentioned by Phil, Newcastle United announced the signing on Sunday of midfielder Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa for £40m.

The 24-year-old signed a five-year contract to become the Magpies' fourth addition of the summer.

His move, thought to be linked to Villa's position on the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules [PSR], has caused quite a stir.

Mark: Hi Phil, if Newcastle get Wissa and another striker over the line but lose Iask, despite the noise on missed targets, do you think our window will be judged as a good one based on who we got in?

Phil: Hello, Mark. I think Newcastle have actually done some good business so far, bringing in Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest and Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa.

Elanga played a big role in Forest reaching Europe, while I really like Ramsey. He was very popular with Villa fans as a local product and I bet Villa were very reluctant sellers.

They have also brought in defender Malick Thiaw from AC Milan, but there is no getting away from the fact Isak’s discontent – and his behaviour – has cast a shadow.

If they can sign Wissa and get A.N.Other done then that is very good business, but losing Isak would be a big blow.

Trust Eddie Howe, though, as he seems well in control of everything and Newcastle still have some very fine players.

  15. Newcastle set to make new £35m bid for Wissa - reportspublished at 11:30 British Summer Time

The Sun, external is reporting that Newcastle United are set to make a new £35m bid for DR Congo forward Yoane Wissa, but Brentford will not sell the 28-year-old before signing a replacement.

Yoane Wissa has removed all association with Brentford from his Instagram account as his uncertain future takes a fresh twist.

The DR Congo forward, who was left out of the squad for Sunday's 3-1 loss at Nottingham Forest, wants to join Newcastle.

The Magpies have seen at least one offer for the forward rejected by Brentford this summer.

Wissa had been expecting the Bees to agree his move to Tyneside this week after the west London side completed the signing of Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth.

However, according to sources, Brentford are still hesitating in allowing Wissa to leave amid suggestions they now value him above their original £40m asking price.

Reports suggest Brentford now value Wissa, who did not feature for the club during pre-season, at £60m.

  18. Transfer window set to break all recordspublished at 11:23 British Summer Time

    Neil Johnston
    BBC Sport football reporter

In terms of transfer spending, the Premier League's summer window is on track to break all records.

With two weeks of the window remaining, data from FootballTransfers.com shows that Premier League clubs have already spent £2.26bn on players since the window opened at the start of June.

That is an increase of 12.7% on the £1.97bn spent during the summer of 2024.

The current record stands at £2.36bn during the 2023 summer transfer window.

With the clock ticking towards the deadline, the future of Newcastle forward - and Liverpool target - Alexander Isak, who is valued at £150m by his club, remains unclear.

Liverpool are keen on Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, while Eagles forward Eberechi Eze is wanted by Tottenham.

Brentford forward Yoane Wissa and Manchester United striker Alejandro Garnacho could also be on the move, along with Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku.

Where will Premier League spending stand after the window closes?

    Nizaar Kinsella
    BBC Sport Chelsea reporter

Ben Doak's departure to Bournemouth has pushed Liverpool's sales up to about £200m this summer, with the Premier League champions having spent more than £270m on new signings and had a £110m bid for Alexander Isak rejected by Newcastle.

Liverpool's major sales have included Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich in a £65.5m deal, Darwin Nunez to Al-Hilal for £46.3m and academy player Jarrell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen for £35m.

Caoimhin Kelleher, Tyler Morton and Nat Phillips have also been sold, while the club received £8.4m from Real Madrid to release Trent Alexander-Arnold early from his contract, though the Spanish club dispute this figure.

The sale of Doak means Liverpool have brought in about £85m in initial fees for the winger, Phillips, Alexander-Arnold, Kelleher, Quansah and Morton.

The six players arrived as either youth players or development projects and cost the Reds an initial £600,000. The subsequent profit for players classed as 'homegrown' gives the Reds an immediate boost in terms of current profit and sustainability rule (PSR) calculations.

Another signing completed since we closed down Monday's page is Bournemouth's move for Liverpool winger Ben Doak, for an initial £20m with a further £5m in add-ons.

The 19-year-old signed a five-year contract and became Bournemouth's fourth summer acquisition, following the arrivals of French defenders Adrien Truffert and Bafode Diakite, and Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic.

Doak has won six caps for Scotland and spent last season on loan at Middlesbrough in the Championship, scoring three times and recording seven assists in 24 matches.

Bournemouth are understood to have beaten interest from other Premier League clubs, including Leeds, as well as Portuguese side Porto.

Doak featured just 10 times for Liverpool since joining from Celtic in 2022.
