Summary

  1. Euro 2020 reasons to cast aside the gloompublished at 15:24 21 June

Lots of doom-mongering of course after another pretty tepid England performance in the 1-1 draw against Denmark but as Monty Python used to say, 'Always Look on the Bright Side of Life'.

Gareth Southgate's side were hardly the great entertainers in the group stage of the last Euros but went on to reach the final after two narrow 1-0 wins over Croatia and the Czech Republic and a pretty drab 0-0 draw against Scotland at Wembley.

England's XG against Denmark was 0.87, last night, was also still a smidgen better than their opponents who ended up on 0.82.

And England have already scored one goal more than at the same stage of the last Euros tournament, so every cloud...

  2. GOAL - Slovakia 1-1 Ukrainepublished at 15:13 21 June

    Mykola Shaparenko (54 mins)

The simple answer to that last question is no.

Where was the marking there from Slovakia for the pull back? But Shaparenko took full advantage with a cool side-foot finish into the bottom corner from inside the box.

  3. KICK-OFFpublished at 15:08 21 June

    Slovakia 1-0 Ukraine

It is back under way in Dusseldorf. Slovakia are 45 minutes away from a place in the knockout stages. Can they hold Ukraine at bay to secure their spot?

Jon, Norfolk: Stephen Warnock asks "when I look at Gareth Southgate's reign, what are the standout performances?". Has he looked at our recent record? And compared it to previous performances? Victories in knockout stages at major tournaments under Southgate = 6 (2 in 2018, 3 in 2021, 1 in 2022). The previous six knockout-stage victories before Southgate stretch back to 1986 - one each in 2006, 2002 and 1996; two in 1990 and one in 1986). Ok, we haven't played at our best in the last few games, but I am amazed at the levels of negativity.

  5. Scotland defender Tierney ruled out of Euro 2024published at 14:54 21 June

    Scotland

Scotland defender Kieran Tierney has been ruled out of the rest of Euro 2024 because of injury, external.

The Arsenal player suffered a hamstring injury during a 1-1 draw with Switzerland in Cologne on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old will now return to London to be assessed.

Scotland assistant John Carver said: "It is a blow because he is one of our top players and in tournament football you need your best players on the park. And, in particular with him, he gives that balance down the left-hand side with Andy Robertson and Callum McGregor and they combine really well."

  6. HALF-TIMEpublished at 14:51 21 June

    Slovakia 1-0 Ukraine

So far so good for Slovakia but Ukraine have grown into the game and will feel they can get back into this.

This is tournament football, Southgate's record in tournaments is very good and 80% of the starting line-up of the last two games are going to play 80% of the tournament. It was a lacklustre display against Denmark, however, none of the England players were on their knees at full time. And we don't appear to have any major injuries to key players. It's not great to watch, but the alternative is the General Election!

  8. Kane v Watkins or Kane & Watkins?published at 14:42 21 June

One thing you will be guaranteed with a Harry Kane and Ollie Watkins partnership is that there will be goals and assists.

They play different styles too, Kane dropping deep to link play while Watkins operates on the shoulder of the last man and runs into the channels.

Aston Villa's Watkins, 28, has scored just three goals in 13 international appearances so far, so maybe a striker alongside him is just what he needs?

Harry Kane is never going to be dropped but not good enough on his own, so why not play Ollie Watkins too? Kane is great at linking play so let someone younger and fitter do the running.

Not sure about the "not good enough on his own" part, but no-one else has mentioned the possibility of England reverting to 4-4-2. Click the thumbs up if you agree with Mark, thumbs down if you don't.

  10. 'You have to forget the names'published at 14:27 21 June

    Denmark 1-1 England

    Guillem Balague
Spanish football journalist on BBC Radio 5 Live

You are all to blame for what is happening. Gareth Southgate has put too much faith on big names and I think he has wasted a game and a half with Foden, Kane, Saka, Trent and Bellingham, which is what everybody wanted.

There is an imbalance between organisation and talent. You have to forget the names.

Gareth Southgate wants to play 4-3-3 and what we are seeing now is a bunch of names being put together, experiments taking place... and it is on the names.

  11. GOAL - Slovakia 1-0 Ukrainepublished at 14:23 21 June

    Ivan Schranz (17 mins)

Slavia Prague forward Ivan Schranz has headed Slovakia in front from six yards, placing his effort back across goal to put Group E's surprise package on the road to a second consecutive win.

They upset Belgium in their opening match - can Slovakia become the third team, after Germany and Spain, to qualify for the knockout stages?

  12. Leeds' Harrison returns to Everton on loanpublished at 14:16 21 June

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Leeds wide man Jack Harrison is to return to Everton on loan.

The former England Under-21 international spent last season at Goodison Park following Leeds’ relegation.

With the Elland Road club consigned to another campaign outside the top flight, Harrison has signed another deal with Everton for the 2024-25 campaign.

Remarkably, it will be Harrison’s sixth season as a loan player.

He initially moved to Manchester City from MLS partner club New York York City in 2018.

He didn’t play a first-team game for the Blues but went on loan at Middlesbrough before spending three seasons at Leeds, eventually making his move permanent in 2021.

Harrison’s contract with Leeds expires in 2028.

I'm all for English managers managing the England team. However, considering no English managers have ever won the Premier League this surely speaks volumes about the talent (or lack of) in English coaches. You only have to look at how the players in the squad are galvanised by the likes of Guardiola, Klopp, Arteta - even Glasner and Emery. I think after this tournament we should go for a progressive, young and tactically sound manager from the continent - let's see if we can get this, quite frankly, massively underperforming but hugely talented squad playing like a top Premier League team.

    Tom in Peterborough

Appointing the best Premier League manager, regardless of nationality, would seem like a reasonable suggestion, but would Pep Guardiola be interested in the job, especially considering the fact he already has one? Jurgen Klopp is available Tom, maybe that is who you had in mind? Remember, when Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello were handed the reins both had won titles, but were unable to get England over the line.

  14. Kane's lack of pressing 'is an issue for those around him'published at 14:06 21 June

    Denmark 1-1 England

    Stephen Warnock
Former England and Aston Villa defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I thought we'd be better shape this time around with the development of Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice older and more experienced, which he is.

You look at form going into it and think that some of the players should be bouncing into these games full of enthusiasm and I don't see that within the squad. It is so difficult because we can have a pop and they could bore their way to the final and win it and we'd all be absolutely delighted but we are frustrated because we don't see that from those players week in and week out.

We see them entertain at the highest level and go at teams and suffocate teams when they press. The one player that doesn't is Harry Kane because that is an issue for those around him.

If Kane doesn't quite do the right press it is easy to play around and then you think I am not going next time and you drop a little bit deeper. If you look at Ollie Watkins, he likes to play alongside someone but we have never seen that tried.

  16. Harry Kane - what is being said?published at 13:55 21 June

    Denmark 1-1 England

Manager Gareth Southgate is not the only member of the England set-up to come under criticism.

Captain Harry Kane has also found himself in the spotlight after their 1-1 draw with Denmark. His contributions have left some pundits and experts feeling frustrated.

Here are some of the things being said about Three Lions' record goalscorer:

    Gary Lineker:

"In all honesty, I think Harry Kane needs to do a lot better. When you’re a striker, your two jobs are obviously you score goals, which he’s brilliant at, he has been all his career and he’s wonderful at that sort of stuff. I think he needs his manager to say ‘I need a little bit more from you Harry'."

    Alan Shearer:

"Harry was not affecting the game at all [against Denmark], he wasn't running in behind, everything was coming short. Similarly to [Bukayo] Saka and [Phil] Foden. It's been far too easy.”

    Thomas Frank:

"Coming deep is what he's done the last four or five years. He just needs runners around him. I think he's doing what he's [always] done and done very well, but he needs the runners."

    Rio Ferdinand:

"I'd be going mad at Kane. I couldn't have my centre-forward not filling in with the same workload that the other players are putting in.

"I need to see the same workload and intensity [from Kane]. Put their centre-half under pressure like I'm receiving as an England defender!"

When you play for a manager it is like any job. He has got to inspire, there has to be a gamplan, an idea an identity. Can you name the last time England played well in a game? Where you looked at it and can see what they are trying to do.

That is my issue and the big problem. When I look at Gareth Southgate's reign, what are the standout performances?

After six years we are still looking and wondering where this England team are at and this is a concern. When we sit here now are we actually surprised at what we are seeing? I don't think we are.

There were major concerns coming into the tournament about who he could play in what system and he still has that problem. There are issues at left-back, where he has not picked certain people and imbalanced the team and that is his fault because he has decided to go down that route.

All the questions we were asking two and three years ago, we are still asking now.
