England vice-captain Kyle Walker says his team-mates "know they can do better" and are "collectively not happy" with the their performances so far in the tournament.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live at full-time, the Manchester City defender said: "It is a game of football and it is tournament football. We take away a point to have four points and be top of the group.

"I can not stand here and say it was a fantastic performance and that we are all singing and dancing in there [the dressing room]. We know that we can do better and that shows the character of us all and what we expect of each other individually.

"Collectively we are not happy with going through the tournament the way we have done so far."

On what has not yet clicked for England, Walker added: "We attack together and defend together but we need to understand when to go and when not to go. It is something we need to practise because things like that in the knockout stages can cost you.

"Our build up play can be a bit better together as well. If we are going to go long then we need to come up the pitch quicker than we are doing and make sure the second balls are our balls.

"We are all here and every single person is representing their country and that means a lot to them. They will give their blood, sweat and tears out there and we are doing the same. Sometimes you do not get the results that you want but we move on to the next one without a loss."

In many ways Southgate has done a wonderful job for England. He inherited a shambles, has tidied it up and created an atmosphere which players want to play for England. But we are long past the point when that is enough. A fourth tournament finals and we still don't know the best combination of players? Lee is spot on (07:40 BST)

    Eric

England's problems are hardly baffling, play a left back at left back, a midfielder in midfield alongside Rice and a left winger on the left.

    John

Isn't the problem what Kane is doing? Gary Lineker was spot on. Our whole team is compressed when he drops deep, and there's no outlet. Get him to stay up front and give the midfield the room to play and then the whole team can push up.

I hope he [Gareth Southgate] gets one of the fans in to give them [players] a quiet talk.

The players do care. That’s one thing with this generation of players.

Sometimes it’s just worth a fan going into the training ground and saying ‘we believe in you’ and ‘we are making these sacrifices for you and we travel all over the world'.

England have got the players, let’s let them loose.

There’s a party going on in Germany, the hosts have let their hair down and are absolutely ripping it up - England are standing on the edge of the dancefloor.

    BBC Radio 5 Live

England fan Matt Buttler's told BBC Radio 5 Live that his patience with Gareth Southgate is starting to wear thin:

“I felt after the tournament would be a natural end for Southgate’s reign. I think we’re seeing some issues playing out that we’ve seen over the last few years. Southgate hasn’t shown any evidence that he can learn from these mistakes and react to them. My patience is starting to wear thin with him.

“After we score we seem to sit back far too much.

    “We’re inviting pressure."

  8. 'I am on the Anthony Gordon train'published at 08:04 21 June

    Denmark 1-1 England

We brought you Izzy Christiansen's summation of England's problems a little earlier.

For the record, the former England midfielder believes the Three Lions' main issues lie on the left.

She said on the latest episode of Football Daily that Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon could provide the solution: "I am on the Anthony Gordon train. I think that he needs to have a sniff, he needs to have a go because he is so direct and he will bring a totally different dynamic to that England forward line.

"He can create, he can score, his pressing is exceptional. He's got good energy."

  9. 'Baffling and concerning' - what is wrong with England?published at 07:55 21 June

    Denmark 1-1 England

    Gareth Southgate

England followed up an opening victory with a draw in their second group game of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and at Euro 2020, which were played in 2021, so we have been here before.

Gareth Southgate has a history of finding solutions during tournaments, but has he had so many problems to fix in the past?

Just like the performances in the goalless draws with Scotland at Euro 2020 and the USA at the 2022 World Cup, this 1-1 stalemate with Denmark has left Southgate with as many questions as answers despite being unbeaten and on the brink of reaching the next round.

Theories abound as to what the England boss can do to improve his team as Euro 2024 progresses. While reaching the knockout stages is within touching distance, optimism is evaporating.

  10. Postpublished at 07:46 21 June

Plenty of strong opinions being expressed this morning.

Lee is not holding back there, and why should he, but everything is relative, I suppose.

Yes, Gareth Southgate has failed to lead England to victory in any one of his three tournaments as manager, but would you describe his record as one of failure?

England have made it to the semi-finals and quarter-finals of successive World Cups and reached the final of the last Euros.

He has the best tournament record of any manager of the men's England team since Sir Alf Ramsey helped them win the World Cup in 1966.

We leave two £100m players at home [Jack Grealish and Marcus Rashford] because they have under performed. We probably would have taken Kalvin Phillips if he wasn't injured, despite him playing poorly or not at all, and the game is crying out for pace and support in attack but Anthony Gordon and Cole Palmer don't get a chance. Come on Gareth, we're behind you but sort it out!

    Jo

I feel sorry for Gareth Southgate, we had to endure 90 minutes last night and he has to watch this all day long. England have the most talenteat the US Open on Sunday. The problem is mindset. Gareth Southgate needs to unshackle the ball and chain around their ankles and get them to play free-flowing, open, beautiful football, which these great lads are capable of doing.

    Jeremy, Somerset

Gareth Southgate keeps failing at tournaments with England because, as he admits, he cannot find the right players to work into his system. However, the best international coaches work their systems around the players - not the other way around - because unlike club football you cannot just go out and buy the perfect fit. He just isn't good enough to adapt, and will continue to fail - tournament after tournament.

England wasted the chance to secure their place in the Euro 2024 knockout stages as Group C winners as they were fortunate to take a draw from a dismal display against Denmark in Frankfurt.

Gareth Southgate’s side would have topped Group C with a win after the earlier draw between Slovenia and Serbia - but were ultimately grateful for a point from a disorganised, shambolic mess of performance.

Harry Kane scored in his fourth successive major tournament to give England an 18th-minute lead but, as so often under manager Southgate, this was the signal for them to shrink into their shell to allow Danish domination.

Denmark got the equaliser they deserved when Morten Hjulmand struck a thunderous 25-yard equaliser after 34 minutes.

Phil Foden struck the post after the break and, while England are still at the head of their group, they must deliver vast improvements against Slovenia.

As an audition for potential favourites to win Euro 2024, this was a disappointing failure.

  13. 'We know there is another level we have got to find'published at 07:25 21 June

    Denmark 1-1 England

England manager Gareth Southgate accepted that his side need to improve following their 1-1 draw with Denmark in Frankfurt.

"Clearly not what we would have hoped," he told BBC One.

"At the moment we're not using the ball well enough and we have to accept that if do that you are going to suffer at times, as we have done tonight. We know there is another level that we have got to find."

Southgate was also asked about his decision to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold with Conor Gallagher, early in the second half.

"It is an experiment and we know we don't have a natural replacement for a Kalvin Phillips and at the moment we are not flowing as we would have liked, that's for sure."

OK, a lot was said on Thursday night and we will go through the reaction bit by bit this morning.

But this line from Izzy Christiansen on Football Daily at the Euros frames the debate quite nicely:

"Formations are formations, but for me football is all about relationships. It's about who you work well with and who has a good understanding of each other's games.

"If we are looking at that England XI I am going OK; Kyle Walker and Bukayo Saka - tick, they work; John Stones and Marc Guehi, they work, with Jordan Pickford behind them.

"We then go into the midfield. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Declan Rice, not working; Kieran Trippier and Phil Foden, not working; Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham - works but hasn't come to life yet.

"So I am going 'OK, how do you assess that? How do you change that?"

Izzy added: "Formations are a way to identify how teams are set up, but, fundamentally, [I want to know] who feels the game with each other? Who can know where the space is? Who can put the ball into the right areas to maximise someone's strengths?

"We just haven't quite seen too many of those [relationships] evolve yet in this tournament."

One thing to remember before we wade into the whys and wherefores of England's disappointing draw with Denmark is that the Three Lions are top of Group C with four points from two games.

Gareth Southgate's side have probably already done enough to qualify for the knockout stages and will go through as group winners with a win over Slovenia in their final group game...
