Republic of Ireland manager Eileen Gleeson has told her players to guard against complacency in Friday's Euro 2025 play-off opener against Georgia.

With Georgia ranked nearly 100 places below the Irish, Gleeson's side are strong favourites to win the two-legged tie and advance to the final round of the play-offs.

The Republic of Ireland hammered Georgia when they met in qualifying for the 2022 World Cup, winning 11-0 in Dublin before completing a 9-0 rout in Gori, but Gleeson insists "anything can happen in football".

"It hasn't really been difficult [working on the players' mindsets]," said Gleeson.

"You're working with professionals now and you understand that you'll play teams of varying levels of opposition.

"The mindset we've been promoting is definitely maintaining intensity and intent and not being complacent around this game because as we know anything can happen in football."

Northern Ireland qualified for the play-off by finishing second behind Portugal in Group three.

Tanya Oxtoby's side started their campaign with a goalless draw at home to Malta before an impressive 3-1 win away to Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Portugal ran out 4-0 winners in Leiria and the reverse fixtures ended in a 2-1 defeat in Northern Ireland.

Northern Ireland got their revenge over Malta with a 2-0 win on the road before goals from Joely Andrews and Lauren Wade meant they ended their campaign with a 2-0 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina at Windsor Park.

The Republic of Ireland were always going to have a tough time.

The Irish bid got off to a slow start after defeats by France, England and Sweden.

In their second game with Sweden it took a late goal by Magdalena Eriksson to break the Irish resolve, and England again ran out as winners at Carrow Road.

Qualifying ended on a huge high when they stunned France 3-1 in Cork with goals from Denise O'Sullivan, Julie-Ann Russell and Ana Patten.

However, the beauty of being in League A for qualifying means you are guaranteed a play-off no matter how qualifying went.
