Cambridge held the edge at set pieces against Newport

Kelland Watts' first goal for Cambridge United set them on their way to a comfortable victory against visiting Newport County.

After a scrappy opening, Newport had the first serious attempt at goal when Anthony Glennon's free-kick was punched away by Jake Eastwood.

But as Cambridge began to boss possession they looked more threatening, and the home side took the lead from a corner late in the first half.

Sullay Kaikai sent a deep ball to the back post that centre-back Watts met with a strong header that gave Newport goalkeeper Nik Tzanev no chance.

Glennon almost found an equaliser after the break when he got a touch in a goalmouth scramble only to be denied by Eastwood.

But after Louis Appere had tested Tzanev again from another corner, James Brophy doubled the lead to take the game beyond Newport's reach.

The winger reacted sharply to convert a rebound after Kylian Kouassi saw his shot cannon back off the post.

The result carried on Cambridge's momentum from the midweek EFL Cup win over Charlton Athletic and see them in 10th, while Newport have now won just one of their opening six games in League Two this season and sit 20th.
