I think we've leant on Jess Fishlock for so many years.

She's got us out of trouble, she's won us games. She's scored goals at really important times. She does it again. That is the value of the player.

Any national team in the world would want Jess Fishlock to play in their team.

England will want to win the group on Sunday.

It's going to be a tough game and they're definitely not going to take it easy on us after losing to France.

When Wales don't play I support England, because of what they've done for Welsh girls in the domestic game, but obviously on Sunday I want us to win.

The big question is, can we have a similar performance without the individual mistakes?

Speaking to ITV, Wales boss Rhian Wilkinson said:

"I've never been prouder. This team, they just keep surprising me. The courage and bravery to play.

"To be that courageous and to show up against one of the best teams in the world, I truly believe France are easily top three, and to score our fist Euro goal - amazing. I'm very proud today."

On goalscorer Jess Fishlock, she said: "Jess is incredible. It wasn't the plan to play her for quite so long but we couldn't take her off [as] she played so well.

"And there's a lot of players who didn't get on the field today, their energy and professionalism, they stayed together through it.

"Yes, we did lose 4-1 today, but it's not always the result. This is a very new nation to the football world and we showed everyone how proud we are to represent Wales.

"Fine margins, you have to experience it. That is the learning process.

"Some of the plays today, against France, they're really strong opposition, I'm not naïve, but we have to be proud of performances like that, and the results we can live with."

Speaking to Sgorio, Wales captain Angharad James said: "I'm so proud of the performance, we left everything out on that field today.

"It was different to the last game and to score our first goal in the Euros, it feels amazing.

"We're disappointed in the way we gave France goals, but the performance was so much better than the first game.

"We always speak about the first and last five minutes of the first half and we were disappointed to go into the break 2-1 down, but the feeling is still definitely different to the first game.

"Moments change the game, and when we're on this stage the moments are more important.

"I'm so happy for Jess, this was her moment, she's worked so hard as an individual in the last 20 years, and I'm so proud she got her moment."

Nobody deserved a goal more than Jess Fishlock for what she contributed to this team.

It would have been a tragedy if she and Sophie Ingle had never played at a major tournament.

  7. Fishlock 'really proud' despite defeatpublished at 22:17 British Summer Time

    FT: Wales 1-4 France

Speaking to ITV, Wales goalscorer Jess Fishlock said:

"I'm really proud of these girls tonight. We were in it and doing exactly what we expected to do

"I think the biggest learning for us in this entire tournament so far is in the little moments, we just have to be a little bit better. But we're so close and I'm so proud of this group tonight."

On her goal, Fishlock said: "I'm very grateful and maybe after the tournament I'll let that sink in a little bit more."

And on Wales' fans, the midfielder added: "What is there to say? We have the best fans in the world.

"They know this is hard, they know that we're doing absolutely everything we can and that we're wanting to get better as well.

"To the Red Wall and everyone who's out here supporting us, thank you so, so much."

Another emphatic defeat, but another moment of history.

Jess Fishlock scoring Wales’ first ever goal at the finals of a major tournament was something to savour, as was Sophie Ingle’s return after injury.

Wales now need a mathematical miracle on Sunday to progress from Group D.

Wales need France to complete a clean sweep by beating the Netherlands and to beat England by five goals themselves.

That is almost certainly going to be too much even for this team of trailblazers to achieve, but any win against their old rivals would be yet another first for the women in red.

Whatever happens and whenever Wales head home, they will savour the experience of this summer and look to learn from it to make sure this isn’t the only time they play on this stage.

I don't think we have the players to play out from the back against teams like France.

The players realised this after about 10 minutes today and started playing long balls and it worked, but I don't think we did it enough, especially in the second half.

As we mentioned, technically Wales can still qualify for the knockout stages, although they need a minor miracle now.

For Waled to progress, they will require a hefty win against reigning champions England, and France would also have to beat the Netherlands on Sunday.

A special moment for Jess Fishlock's goal.

You could not pick anyone more deserving of that moment.

Wales will be pleased with the performance but not the result.

The only thing that has punished us tonight is individual mistakes.

That second goal just before half-time was massive, this could've been a different game had we gone into half-time drawing.

They gave themselves no chance of upsetting the French conceding the way they did.

    I think it's a bit of a wake-up call for France.

It's a comfortable victory on paper, but they've had to work very hard for it and they've had to withstand a few uncomfortable moments against Wales and that's a credit to Rhian Wilkinson and her players.

It's all about moments in the game.

This is Wales, I think they've really shown themselves tonight.

They wanted to show what they were all about tonight and I think they've done that tonight. They can be proud of the performance.

The whistle goes and it's a 10th successive victory for France, who were given a scare by Wales in the first half but pulled clear after the break.

Technically Wales are still in with a chance of qualifying for the knockout stages of Euro 2025 heading into their final Group D game against England on Sunday, but Rhian Wilkinson's squad need something of a miracle after two heavy defeats.
