Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold speaking to Sky Sports: "I didn't know what to expect stepping out at Anfield after what had happened a few weeks ago.

"I wanted to play for the club one more time and he [Arne Slot] trusted me to play. To get the reception I got means more than anything.

"I've played hundreds of games for the club but I've never felt so loved and cared for than today.

"There wasn't a day, minute, second that I didn't think about the team. Twenty years is a very long time time but I've loved every single minute of it. The ups and the downs.

"It's been an honour and privilege to be part of. I'll remember this day. It's very special for me. It goes down as the best day of my life."

Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones said he was delighted with the reception that defender Trent Alexander-Arnold got in his final appearance at Anfield.

Alexander-Arnold, who is expected to join Real Madrid upon the expiry of his contract at Liverpool, was booed during his penultimate appearance at Anfield but received a much warmer reception after the game against Crystal Palace.

In a post-match interview with BBC Sport, Jones thanked the right-back for guiding him and his teammates throughout his years at the club.

I don't think Klopp would have done it this season. Would he have got that stellar performance out of Gravenberch and played him in that position? Doubtful. Would Salah have turned in that season? Doubtful. Sometimes you need a new reset, and Slot gave them that. He now needs new signings to put his stamp on this squad.

More from Liverpool boss Arne Slot, speaking to Sky Sports on when his mind switches to next season: "Probably four weeks ago! It never stops. Even during the season you are looking to the next one. The sporting director is more involved in the long term than me, but he keeps me involved the whole time, as you can expect. The targets we have now did not come up last week. We've been looking at them for a long time."

On the defining moment of the season: "Thinking we would be part of it came early in the season after the United win. Before that we played good teams but to beat them 3-0 in their stadium when we expected them to be top six it was 'OK we can compete for the league this season'.

"Then after City away that was really a moment where I thought it was going to be difficult for other teams to end up above us."

  5. 'At certain clubs it's maybe a bit more special'published at 14:05 British Summer Time 26 May

    Liverpool 1-1 Crystal Palace

Liverpool boss Arne Slot, speaking to Sky Sports: "It's always special to win something, but at certain clubs maybe a little bit more. I experienced this at Feyenoord where the fans are so passionate, and it's the same and more over here.

"I don't think you expect anything like this. If you look at the Premier League in the past few seasons, it was always a race to the end - two or three teams competing to the last day. To be part of it was already nice, let alone to win it."

Looking at points tallies in isolation is not right in my opinion. This season had a lower points tally because so many of the non-big six had a great season and took points off the top clubs. (Also, had Liverpool not had the league sewn up five weeks ago, I’m sure they may have got more than two points from four games)

  9. A busy summer ahead for Liverpool?published at 13:45 British Summer Time 26 May

Last summer, Liverpool perhaps raised a few eyebrows by not being particularly active in the transfer market, with striker Federico Chiesa their main arrival.

But with Trent Alexander-Arnold departing they are likely to be busier this summer to ensure they stay ahead of their rivals.

Work on that is already under way with the Reds moving for Bayer Leverkusen duo Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz. Frimpong can play anywhere down the right-hand side, while Wirtz is an attacking midfielder.

But regardless of who may arrive in the summer, Slot hopes that Sunday's scenes of celebrations will drive those already at the club on to achieve more success.

"Hopefully the appetite will be big," he said. "That is what we have to see in the upcoming weeks. A few have already shown they can win multiple times. They just keep on performing year after year.

"We know it will be tough again, it was already tough this season and it will be just as tough or tougher next season."

    John Murray
BBC Radio 5 Live chief football correspondent on 5 Live Breakfast

On how Liverpool are already gearing up for a title defence: "They've obviously got Giorgi Mamardashvili arriving, we know that. But Florian Wirtz, if they spend £126 million on him, [Milos] Kerkez looks like a really possibility and [Jeremie] Frimpong as well to strengthen the squad.

"If they get that business done quickly, then that is a real statement.

"They probably know next season the bar is very likely to be higher, so it is like again Liverpool of years ago to get the title won and act immediately. And if they are to land all of those players, then that throws the down the gauntlet."

What a season, what a player. Twenty nine goals in the league and 18 assists. It's just ridiculous consistency from this guy.

He very rarely misses any games and the brilliance he brings to Liverpool [is so important].

Once he gets on [his left foot] he really is deadly and he's an incredible player. Obviously he plays in a really good team and good teams need great players. There's no doubt he is that and he's been absolutely sensational.

On Mohamed Salah's Ballon d'Or credentials: "I don't see why not. You are talking about Raphinha, aren't you, as he is one of the names mentioned in the Ballon d'Or. And you just have to wheel out those numbers and figures for what he does and contributes.

"And you put those figures alongside the performance level he gives, he doesn't miss games, he is very rarely injured, and he very rarely gets brought off the field."

Liverpool fans were not able to celebrate inside Anfield when the Reds last won the title in 2020 because of the Covid-19 pandemic, and they have been determined to make up for that with their celebrations for their record-equalling 20th league title.

The streets around Anfield before kick-off were a sea of red as supporters - both those going to the game and those who just wanted to soak up the atmosphere - gathered in huge numbers, cheering the arrival of the team bus and letting off red flares.

Inside the ground a cast of Liverpool legends were also in attendance, including Jurgen Klopp, who left his role as manager last summer after leading the club to domestic and European glory.

It was fitting that Salah, the league's top goalscorer, notched his 29th of the campaign to cap an incredible season in which he also had 18 assists to set the record for most goal involvements in a 38-game season.

The other players to have had 47 goal involvements - Andrew Cole and Alan Shearer - both did so in 42-match seasons.

  15. Slot = Rodgers?published at 13:15 British Summer Time 26 May

    Liverpool

Dave is correct - Liverpool finished second with 84 points under Brendan Rodgers in 2013-14, the same amount they accrued with Slot in charge this campaign.

But to win the league, you only have to beat the rest rather than any records - and that is what Liverpool did, comprehensively, this season.

No disrespect to Slot, but Klopp could have won the league this season. I think even Rogers matched his points tally? The challenge will be next year, when City should be back, Arsenal will hopefully be able to challenge, and maybe another team makes it interesting and an actual challenge so Liverpool can show us how good (or not) they actually are.

Liverpool enjoyed a day of celebration with Mohamed Salah's late equaliser ensuring they signed off with a draw against Crystal Palace.

Salah's goal six minutes from time cemented his Golden Boot win and also equalled the Premier League goal involvement record as it took his tally to 29 goals and 18 assists.

There was an air of expectation that the Reds would round off the season with a win, but Palace were not reading from the same script and took the lead when Conor Bradley lost possession and Tyrick Mitchell teed up Ismaila Sarr to slot in.

Ryan Gravenberch - a key player in the title - was sent off for taking down Daichi Kamada in the 68th minute when he was the last man.

But despite that, the hosts finished strong and Salah ensured the campaign did not end in defeat when he struck from close range to prompt more celebrations from the Liverpool fans.

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland on Pep Guardiola's comments that Champions League qualification is like a title: "It's not a title feeling but I know what he means and I agree with him. It is really important.

"This club has to play in the Champions League, I have to play in the Champions League, Pep has to manage a team in the Champions League. So it is important and we are relieved to be there because it has been a hard and difficult season."
