  1. 'If I was a City fan - which I am - I'm not complaining'published at 12:50 British Summer Time 26 May

    Fulham 0-2 Man City

    Manchester City

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland on what is needed going forward: "I mean, you cannot win it [the Premier League] every year. Nobody has ever won it four years in a row. We came third this season, but City have won the Premier League in six out of the past eight years.

"If I was a City fan - which I am - I'm not complaining. I wish we had won it this year as well, but you cannot win it every year. Next year we are going to do everything we can to make it a much better season."

  2. Overhead kick 'was just intuition'published at 12:45 British Summer Time 26 May

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan on securing Champions League qualification on the final day of the season: "Coming to a tough ground against a really good opponent, to play the way we have played, to create our chances, to manage their chances, and then to win and secure Champions League was very important. We are very happy with that."

On scoring his first league goal of the season: "It took me some time this season to score, but it was just intuition. Arriving in the box at the back post, I try to be where I think the ball might drop. When I saw the ball going over my head, I had to adapt my run, adjust and then just try to go for it.

"When I landed and turned around, I didn't even know if the ball was in the net or not but then I saw my team-mates coming towards me."

  3. Grealish 'just wants an arm around him'published at 12:40 British Summer Time 26 May

    Michael Brown
Former Tottenham midfielder on BBC Football Daily

The problem is that he has a decent contract so it won't be easy for a club to come and take him. It looks like it will have to be a loan deal because no-one can probably pay the transfer fee and the wages.

Grealish is a very infectious character - he is kind and he just wants an arm around him and to play football.

I think there will be a few takers for him on a loan deal because they might be able to get the best out of him if they do get him to enjoy his football again.

He just needs to be playing. He is great in the dressing room with everyone and he trains hard. Yes, we know he has had the odd moment where he has let himself down but that is his character and you have to accept it.

I think that may have caused an issue on the odd occasion for obvious reasons, but I want to see him playing football and smiling again.

  4. 'I'm the person who fought for Grealish'published at 12:35 British Summer Time 26 May

    Fulham 0-2 Man City

    Manchester City

More from Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola about Jack Grealish: "It is nothing personal with Jack. I'm the person who fought for him to come here, the person who fought for him to stay here this season, and the same next season. I'm the one who said that I want Jack Grealish.

"He didn't come because he didn't come, but not for some other reason. What happens in the future is a job for Txiki [Begiristain], Hugo [Viana] and the agents."

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola provided a defiant response in his post-match news conference when asked about Jack Grealish's future at the club: "Don't ask me about Jack. Who said I'm not happy with Jack?

"Rico [Lewis] was not selected. [James] McAtee was exceptional against Aston Villa and Wolves, so why not ask me about McAtee? It is not personal.

"I have 24 players. I had to get rid of six players last game and five players today because [Mateo] Kovacic got sent off.

"I treat Jack like [Abdukodir] Khusanov, McAtee and all the players who have not been selected, but you say they are in trouble? It's not about that. I have 24 players and I had to get rid of five players because Kovacic was sent off in the last game."

  7. Is there any way back for Grealish?published at 12:20 British Summer Time 26 May

    Fulham 0-2 Man City

    Shamoon Hafez
    BBC Sport football news reporter

Manchester City have 32 players listed on their official website, so numerous departures this summer are likely. Will Jack Grealish be one of them?

The forward made a major contribution in the club's Treble success in 2022-23, but has struggled to replicate his best form since - and his days at the club now seem numbered after being left out of the squad on Sunday.

Grealish has scored just four Premier League goals across the past two seasons and has become accustomed to being a substitute.

Signed for £100m from Aston Villa in 2021, he also failed to feature against Crystal Palace in last Saturday's FA Cup final defeat, with Pep Guardiola instead handing a surprise second-half debut to Argentine teenager Claudio Echeverri.

It remains to be seen whether he will be selected for Man City's Club World Cup squad, starting in the United States on 14 June.

Third place & UCL qualification for the 15th season running is an excellent outcome for Man City from a very challenging season. Key decisions required during the summer on Grealish, legends Bernie Silva and Ederson among others. We need pace, energy and creativity to challenge in a big way next season.

  9. 'Champions League qualification is like a title'published at 12:12 British Summer Time 26 May

    Fulham 0-2 Man City

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola speaking to BBC Match of the Day about Champions League qualification: "It is like a title [because of] the obstacles. When you continue [a poor run of form], you finish 10th or 11th or 12th or 13th. This is the destiny of all the teams in the Premier League when they are in November, December or January and cannot fight for the Premier League, like we have done for many years. People can say: 'I don't want to fight again, just to qualify for the Europa League.'

"But we continued playing good, we were there and we did it.

"At the end of it all, we have finished third. We are not miles away from Arsenal but the distance to Liverpool is huge. We have to improve - and hopefully we can do it."

Man City's task of returning to Europe's elite club competition next season went to the final day, but they were in command for large parts of the game.

Assessing the formbook between the sides beforehand this result should never have been in doubt, and City duly beat Fulham for the 18th time in a row.

Pep Guardiola's side have lost 16 times this season, their most since 2008-09, but end the campaign with a 10-game unbeaten run.

Manchester City finished third in the Premier League as they beat Fulham to secure a place in the Champions League next term.

City dominated the opening stages and deservedly took the lead courtesy of Ilkay Gundogan's stunning bicycle kick - his first league goal of the campaign.

Fulham responded well as Harry Wilson's low curling effort was tipped away from goal by Ederson at full stretch, with Andreas Pereira only able to find the side-netting as he followed up.

Josko Gvardiol had a header saved by Leno at point-blank range and Erling Haaland added a second from the penalty spot after Jorge Cuenca's trip on Gundogan.

Fulham end the campaign in 12th.

  13. 'This will be remembered as an unbelievable season'published at 11:55 British Summer Time 26 May

    FT: Newcastle 0-1 Everton

    Newcastle United

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe on the season and their objectives: "That would have been the dream scenario for us (winning a trophy and Champions League qualification). Overall, this will be remembered as an unbelievable season and the future of Newcastle to look back on and reflect on and hopefully a turning point in our history.

"Yes, today was horrible in many ways because we didn't play well, it was a disappointing performance, but we got the end result we all craved, and we got Champions League football coming back."

  14. Newcastle form since Brentford losspublished at 11:50 British Summer Time 26 May

So Eddie Howe pinpointed the 4-2 defeat to Brentford in December as the turning point of Newcastle United’s season.

At that stage, the Magpies had just one win in their previous five matches. But what followed was nothing short of remarkable.

Howe’s side embarked on a nine-game winning streak across all competitions, equalling a club record. During that run, they dispatched Arsenal twice, Aston Villa and Manchester United.

Defensively, they were rock solid with six clean sheets while ruthlessly efficient in attack, scoring 26 goals in the process.

By the end of the streak, Newcastle had surged into the top four and booked a spot in the Carabao Cup final - which they went on to win.

  15. 'Brentford loss was turning point'published at 11:45 British Summer Time 26 May

    FT: Newcastle 0-1 Everton

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe looked back on the turning point of the season: "Looking back, the 4-2 loss to Brentford was a turning point - we were feeling really dejected and disappointed.

"There was a lot of self-reflection from everybody, not just staff but players as well. Several meetings in the build-up to the next game, which was Leicester. We sort of came back as a different team after that game. We found consistency for the first time that has alluded us all season.

"Players showed great attitude, and the cup run helped build positivity as well, and we ended up getting there."

I'm certain you'll ignore this, but Newcastle's best season is hardly a positive when you consider it's another sportswashing project taking a spot from well-run clubs like Brighton, Bournemouth or Villa. It's important we don't celebrate these things, and try and put pressure on the owners who use football for their own amoral means.

  17. 'It is going to be a big transfer window'published at 11:35 British Summer Time 26 May

    Newcastle 0-1 Everton

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe on the summer transfer window: "Yes, it is going to be a big transfer window. It's difficult to say on numbers, but I do think it's a window that we have to be active in and I'm sure we will be.

"The power of the Champions League and the pull of the Champions League is huge and we can't get away from that, the excitement that this will bring for the people here.

"And of course it's a selling point for us now, it's an opportunity for us to sell that dream to future players that might be considering coming to us."

  18. Isak reaches biggest stagepublished at 11:30 British Summer Time 26 May

Newcastle's resolve to keep outstanding striker Alexander Isak may just have been tested had they failed to finish in the top five. Now the Swede has the stage he craves.

Isak finished this season as the second highest scorer in the Premier League, with 23 goals. It counted for 33% of the league goals scored by Newcastle in 2024-25.

Only Mohamed Salah has been involved in more Premier League goals or scored more non-penalty goals this season than Isak.

Isak's goals were directly responsible for 15 of Newcastle's points, and nine of his strikes were winners - the joint post in the Premier League, alongside Salah.

  19. 'The best and most successful Newcastle season'published at 11:25 British Summer Time 26 May

    Newcastle 0-1 Everton

BBC Radio Newcastle's Matthew Raisbeck on the Magpies' season: "Just think about the season they have just had and where they are now - forget about how we got there.

"They finished in the Champions League places and won a trophy - those two things together surely means this has to be the most successful and the best season.

"To do that after three transfer windows without improving the starting XI and being forced to sell players last summer while rivals strengthened - the way they have turned this season around in December has been truly remarkable.

"They deserve all of the credit and gratitude they are getting. These are special times for Newcastle United and we are witnessing history."

  20. Newcastle scramble over the linepublished at 11:20 British Summer Time 26 May

    Newcastle 0-1 Everton

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Newcastle's players got the message loud and clear before kick-off with a giant banner stretching the length of the Gallowgate End reading: "You entered the pitch as players, you left it as legends."

It could all have been so different when Everton led and Aston Villa were drawing at Manchester United.

But events elsewhere ensured Newcastle's players and manager Howe were able to take a glorious lap of honour at the final whistle and bask in the afterglow of a campaign that brought success at home and a passage into the Champions League.

Newcastle were nowhere near their best, and the Geordie nerves were really jangling when Carlos Alcaraz stole in on Vitalii Mykolenko's cross to beat Nick Pope with 25 minutes left.

There was a stunned silence until huge roars swept round the stadium in an attempt to shake Newcastle out of the anxiety that had gripped them from kick-off.

In the end, the loudest cheers came from those following events at Old Trafford.
