  3. 'My mum thinks Bellingham can be repulsive but I see special boy' - Tuchelpublished at 14:37 British Summer Time 11 June

Some interesting comments from England boss Thomas Tuchel on the argument that England would be better without Jude Bellingham:

"I know he can bring mixed emotions. I see this with my mother - she can sometimes not see the nice and well-educated and well-behaved guy that I see," he told Talksport.

"If he smiles he wins everyone over, but sometimes you see the hunger and the rage and the fire.

"It can come out in a way that can be a bit repulsive for example, for my mother when she sits in front of the TV. I see that. But in general we are very happy to have him, he's a special boy."

For a decade, England have played with a Harry Kane mentality. It’s about time we play with a Jude Bellingham mentality. Someone who plays week in and week out in a fast-paced, hard-working, intense attacking style. We have the players for it, but it requires making someone else England's model player and captain. Saka, Bellingham, Gordon, Eze, Palmer, etc are all exciting for club but dull for country… time to ask why?

  5. 'It's important to get the expectations right'published at 14:30 British Summer Time 11 June

    FT: England 1-3 Senegal

    England

England boss Thomas Tuchel asked to explain his post-match comments about adjusting expectations:

"Maybe we need to get our expectations right. Senegal arrived with the objective to win and to make history, we arrived with objective of winning. Would we have had the same joy as them if we won? I don't think so.

"We set the standards and demands high, but at a point, do we not need to accept the quality on the other side? Celebrate the goals more, be more happy, create an environment where the players feel they can express their joy more lively.

"Or is it just not in us? Is it a way of lifestyle connected to different cultures? I don't have the answers, but I think it's important to get the expectations right in the next international window, then it becomes easier to express our joy."

  6. 'Bellingham is more a 10 or eight than a six'published at 14:23 British Summer Time 11 June

    FT: England 1-3 Senegal

    England

England boss Thomas Tuchel, speaking to Talksport, on what is Jude Bellingham's best position: "That is a question that applies to many of our players.

"From outside I thought for many years he could be a six and an eight. Then he had an amazing season as a false nine at Real Madrid. He scored and scored and created chances.

"I see still that hunger - in our first match against Albania his diving header in the box, the hunger to go with his body in front of the defender without any fear. It shows me the determination he has to be on the scoreboard. I see what I normally only see in strikers. I think now he is more a ten or eight than a six.

"I struggle to see that [that England would be better without Bellingham]."

  7. Bellingham 'brings an edge'published at 14:17 British Summer Time 11 June

    FT: England 1-3 Senegal

    England

England boss Thomas Tuchel was asked if Jude Bellingham is key to England's success: "That's basically how I feel. He has a certain something and brings an edge. It's needed if we want to achieve big things.

"It needs to be channelled towards the opponent and towards our goal, and not to intimidate team-mates or be aggressive towards team-mates of opponents.

"He has the fire - I don't want to dim that, he should play with that as that's his strength. But that does bring some traits that can intimidate team-mates. Sometimes you see the explosion towards referees. That edge is hard to find."

    Is Bellingham difficult to manage?

"No, not at all. He's a nice kid, very open and intelligent."

  8. 'I can spend hours in book stores'published at 14:14 British Summer Time 11 June

England boss Thomas Tuchel on what he does to relax away from football:

"You try to have routines, morning breath work, meditation. I meet friends, have coffee with friends, chit-chat about nothing. I can spend hours in book stores. I can endlessly spend time looking at real estate, interior design, architecture."

  9. 'I will always be tempted to stay'published at 14:12 British Summer Time 11 June

    FT: England 1-3 Senegal

    England

England boss Thomas Tuchel on his future after the World Cup and whether he might stay on for Euro 2028: "I like the question after yesterday!

"I will always be tempted to stay because I love the group and the opportunity, it's an honour to be England coach. I can tell you that even after the disappointment yesterday.

"If you ask me today, yes. I am enjoying it, I feel the support, trust and respect of people in the FA. I wanted a new challenge and environment.

"[I love] the chance to be close to the Premier League, but also to update myself and to have input from various people, from rugby, from Royal Air Force, how to build teams and rhythm.

"To have a chance to pick a squad without the transfer period. It's the right challenge for me at the moment, it's clear that it's a big challenge but I love it."

  10. 'Liverpool and Arsenal will have huge advantage'published at 14:09 British Summer Time 11 June

    FT: England 1-3 Senegal

    England

England boss Thomas Tuchel on next season: "The schedule becomes very competitive.

"I think teams like Liverpool and Arsenal will have a huge advantage in next season's Premier League title race because the players can rest now.

"We hope to have more English players at the end of European competitions like the Champions League. There were not enough this season."

  11. 'Alexander-Arnold was very well dressed'published at 14:07 British Summer Time 11 June

    FT: England 1-3 Senegal

    England

England boss Thomas Tuchel on which England player he would ask for fashion advice:

"Trent Alexander-Arnold was very well dressed when we attended the Formula One. His style can suit more older people, very classic and stylish. He looked amazing."

  12. 'Club World Cup is too long'published at 14:04 British Summer Time 11 June

    FT: England 1-3 Senegal

    England

England boss Thomas Tuchel on the expanded Club World Cup: "I think it's a long format. I can understand the excitement if I was a little boy.

"But I feel it is too long, the amount of time the players will spend in the USA and hotel rooms, the travel feels heavy on their shoulders.

"Playing such a long tournament after such a long season gives me goosebumps. But I am a little biased. I understand that once it starts, players will get excited and ambitious to win a trophy. But it's a long time for them to stay switched on."

  13. 'Next week we will go to America'published at 14:01 British Summer Time 11 June

    FT: England 1-3 Senegal

    England

England boss Thomas Tuchel speaking to Talksport:

On World Cup preparation: "As a club manager you look two weeks ahead, every three days, that's the rhythm and you push everyone to have the longest season possible. You don't look ahead to get distracted.

"Next week we will go to America to look at clubs, training facilities, observe what it's like for European teams to play at 15:00 [BST] in Miami.

"Drinks, cooling systems, all these things.

"As a club coach I don't feel comfortable doing all this while we are still in the qualification process, but we have to do it."

Will you be watching the Under-21s at the Euros?

"It's at the same time unfortunately, but if Lee Carsley and the Under-21s make it to the semi-finals then I will be there."

  14. 'The team will always come first'published at 13:58 British Summer Time 11 June

    FT: England 1-3 Senegal

    England

England boss Thomas Tuchel says some players may have to make sacrifices.

    Q. Does the individual have to step back for fluidity of the team?

    A. "Gareth Southgate and Lee Carsley tried to bring the talent together. I am trying now and still we feel we are lacking the enthusiasm and joy consistently on international level.

"The individual has to take a step back for the greater good

"It's on us to find the right mix, the right chemistry in the team, we haven't done this yet. First camp was good, second camp was a bit of a mixture. Not a disaster, but a mixture.

"In November, the squad selection will be more competitive but more straightforward for the World Cup qualifiers."

On choosing between individuals playing well and those who fit better with the team:

"It would be a hard choice. It depends on us, if we have a similar structure and place, if he gives us something unique and can make connections with team-mates and boosts chemistry then we will try to use him. But if not then the team will always come first."

  15. 'Better versions of players when Henderson is in camp'published at 13:55 British Summer Time 11 June

    FT: England 1-3 Senegal

    England

England boss Thomas Tuchel on Jordan Henderson's inclusion: "He's lean, I'm sure he's still there on a professional level. He brings players together.

"We see better versions of players when Jordan Henderson is in camp than when he is not in camp."

  16. 'Alexander-Arnold has been out of rhythm'published at 13:54 British Summer Time 11 June

    FT: England 1-3 Senegal

    England

England boss Thomas Tuchel speaking to Talksport:

Question - why not give more youngsters chance in friendlies than older players?

    "Fair enough, good question.

"I am aware that Kyle Walker got a lot of criticism for his performance yesterday, we are all aware he did not have his best day. Trent Alexander-Arnold has been out of rhythm, so it was about picking an alternative.

"We desperately want to have him [Trent] in the team because he gives us something unique. If he gives us something unique then we'll make sure he has his place and that applies to any player. If not, we will value the team more than an individual."

"We decided to allow Tino Livramento to play his last Under-21 tournament.

"I think we made a lot of changes yesterday - Senegal played with their strongest, most competitive team possible, and we decided to put out a serious team with a lot of experience.

"Sending Jordan Henderson home at the moment is not an option, because he brings the best out of other players and has a huge impact in the camp."

  17. 'Kane is our captain and a goal scorer'published at 13:50 British Summer Time 11 June

    FT: England 1-3 Senegal

England boss Thomas Tuchel speaking to Talksport.

On playing Harry Kane: "I'm not sure we can't do it [press with Kane] as he did it with Bayern Munich this season.

"The courage within the formation for the high press was not there yesterday. We lacked the courage to push with the wingers higher and with the back four.

"We got a bit better in the second half.

"At the moment Harry Kane is our captain and a goal-scorer. I think we can expect to press with him high, but then we need to be brave from behind."

  18. 'I have to take this responsibility'published at 13:46 British Summer Time 11 June

    FT: England 1-3 Senegal

    England

England boss Thomas Tuchel: "I agree [England don't play high energy often enough]. That's my observation.

"We have been focussing on that since I started, with how we can change that.

"I think it's massively about connections that the team generates, that we have joy in playing together.

"I have to take this responsibility. How can we transfer the joy and quality that guys have in expressing themselves on to the field?

"Yesterday I loved the energy from the bench. It made me directly connect with the team on a new level, because we started going through gaps, playing with courage to create chances."

  19. 'The two games were not good enough'published at 13:41 British Summer Time 11 June

    FT: England 1-3 Senegal

    England

England boss Thomas Tuchel speaking to Talksport: "I already have an idea of what to do. I am convinced that the first camp was a big success, I like it and everything that we started building

"We did some experiments in the second camp, not everything was bad, we did some good things but the two games were not good enough.

"It was a good learning and it brings clarity, each game is a learning situation and helps us mould the team and find solutions."

  20. 'Right now it's not digested'published at 13:37 British Summer Time 11 June

    FT: England 1-3 Senegal

    England

England boss Thomas Tuchel speaking to Talksport: "I'm not very good, I didn't sleep well after last night. I'm disappointed, it was a short night, we hate to lose.

"I was not fully happy with the performance overall. The way we lost, losing at home, didn't make me sleep well.

"Once you do the debrief and dig into clips and deeper analysis of what happened within the camp, straight away comes the step when you go towards solutions.

"But right now it's not digested."
