What did people expect when Tuchel came in? He's a very similar style of manager to Southgate, except with a record of winning trophies. Unfortunately, with the way France and Spain's teams are looking, among others, I don't know if England will have the chances like they have in the last few tournaments again. What they needed was a more expansive, attack-minded coach in my opinion.

The problem that England has always had, historically, is playing big names over who actually plays well as a team. That was meant to be what was changing under Tuchel. I cannot fathom why Henderson and Walker are starting consistently. I'm a Liverpool fan and love Henderson, but he's just too old to be getting into the England team as a regular starter. Looks like 2026 will be a repeat of the heartbreak of previous WCs.

  5. 'It's a backwards step'published at 13:10 British Summer Time 11 June

    FT: England 1-3 Senegal

Talking about the England shirt weighing heavy, you go back to the days of Fabio Capello. Gareth Southgate did a lot in particular at trying to take away that burden, of that expression. I think some of the comments made by Thomas Tuchel, it's a backward step because all of a sudden you are almost encouraging the negativity.

I don't think England, from a position where they were, the position was to go forwards rather than go back from where England have been challenging in previous tournaments.

England have the same problem we had with the Scholes, Lampard, Gerrard etc era. We have lots of talent in the middle of the park, but no idea on how to create a system that helps the talent shine. It's early days under Tuchel, but he needs to find a way to get the best out of them and quickly.

  7. England's continental recordpublished at 12:58 British Summer Time 11 June

    FT: England 1-3 Senegal

    Tom McCoy
    BBC Sport journalist

Defeat by Senegal was England’s first loss against an African side, with the Three Lions having won 15 and drawn six of 21 previous matches.

It means the only continental opposition they remain unbeaten against are teams from Asia.

Australia, who have been part of the Asian Football Federation since 2006, did beat the Three Lions at Upton Park in 2003 but that came whilst they were affiliated to Oceania.

England’s first defeat - by continent of opposition

    Europe: 2-1 v Scotland, March 1874

    North America: 1-0 v USA, June 1950

    South America: 2-1 v Uruguay, May 1953

    Oceania: 3-1 v Australia, February 2003

    Africa: 3-1 v Senegal, June 2025

I think the FA bottled it by not keeping Lee Carsley on. Remember that must-win game against Greece? He had a load of the senior players pull out and put out a young, inexperienced team, but played everyone in their correct position and told them to attack. That's what England needs now.

Better to experiment with youth than experience in the long lead-up to a major tournament. Would like to see more under-21s given a run-out in the near future.

  9. England's latest set of brotherspublished at 12:46 British Summer Time 11 June

    Tom McCoy
    BBC Sport journalist

There wasn’t much to celebrate for England fans in the defeat by Senegal but it was nonetheless a proud moment for one family. Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah made his senior international debut at the City Ground, following in the footsteps of older brother Nathaniel, who won his only cap seven years ago.

They are the 21st set of siblings to represent the Three Lions but only the third in the past 90 years, along with Gary and Phil Neville plus World Cup winners Bobby and Jack Charlton.

Nathaniel, who is now at Sheffield Wednesday, has one of the shortest England careers on record, having spent around seven minutes on the pitch as an injury-time substitute in a Nations League win away to Spain in 2018.

Trevoh has already surpassed that total, having completed last night’s match.

Liverpool's move for Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz is at an advanced stage, with the clubs in discussions over the structure of a transfer that could be worth £114m.

The Reds submitted a third formal bid for the Germany playmaker last week, worth £100m guaranteed and a further £14m of add-ons. If completed, it would smash the club's £75m record signing of captain Virgil van Dijk in 2018.

Sources have told BBC Sport that talks are now focused on the structure of the final details of the transfer, including the value of the add-ons and how achievable they are. Leverkusen had valued the midfielder at around £126m

Wirtz, 22, has made it clear that his preference is to move to Anfield following interest from Manchester City and Bayern Munich.

Tottenham are closing in on appointing Brentford manager Thomas Frank as their new head coach by the weekend.

On Tuesday it was reported that talks between the clubs are ongoing and have progressed positively amid a growing expectation Frank could even be confirmed in the next 48 hours as Ange Postecoglou's successor.

Discussions are understood to be amicable and there is a will from all parties to conclude the agreement quickly.

BBC Sport understands that recently appointed Spurs chief executive Vinai Venkatesham, who only started work last Monday, has been involved in the process of appointing Frank, alongside chairman Daniel Levy

Hull City have appointed Sergej Jakirovic as their new head coach on a two-year deal, with the option of a further year.

The 48-year-old Bosnian joins the Championship side after a spell in charge of Turkish Super Lig outfit Kayserispor.

The Tigers sacked boss Ruben Selles last month after they narrowly avoided relegation to League One, staying up on goal difference.

Jakirovic has managed in Croatia, Slovenia and Bosnia, and was only appointed head coach of Kayserispor in January.

  17. 'Alarm bells were ringing'published at 11:55 British Summer Time 11 June

    Ian Dennis
BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter on Football Daily podcast

I do think in the opening seconds the alarm bells were ringing because one of Senegal's first attacks went straight through the midfield. They cut through the midfield with ease and Thomas Tuchel turned around to his bench with his arms open wide as if to say 'how easy was that?'

I made a note of the England formations going back to 2016 and I still can't see when an England team started 4-4-2. I was told that was a 4-4-2 formation. This is a significant change from what these England players have been used to for the best part of nine years.

England under Lee Carsley looked far better than Tuchel's England. Did the FA bottle it after the first Greece game, the one blot in Carsley's copybook? I suspect they did. Either Tuchel is going to pull a rabbit out of a hat and produce a world-class team very quickly or we are going to see a club manager woefully out of his depth at this level.

  19. Where do England stand in World Cup qualifying?published at 11:45 British Summer Time 11 June

Thomas Tuchel has taken charge of three World Cup qualifiers so far and has won all of them. The game against Senegal was a friendly.

Those victories mean England sit on top of their qualifying group as things stand. That will be crucial to hang on to as the winner of each group automatically qualifies.
