  1. The numbers behind the fouls on Salahpublished at 13:25 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November

    Phil McNulty Q&A

Andy: Hi Phil. During every match, Mo Salah is constantly rugby tackled, manhandled, pushed, and grappled by defenders but hardly ever gets a free-kick in his favour. Do you think the refs have marked him as a diver or are they simply incompetent?

Phil: Hello, Andy. I’ve not seen every Liverpool match, so I cannot make a definitive judgement but I have asked Opta to give me some stats on fouls given for challenges on Mohamed Salah.

Here are some that might interest you.

In 11 Premier League games this season, the figure is eight fouls for challenges on Salah – three of those were in the opening game at Ipswich Town. In 38 games in 2022/23 it was 20 fouls. In 32 games last season it was 12 fouls, so you suspect he is on course for that figure to be exceeded this season.

The season when that figure was highest was in 2018/19, when it was 25 in 38 games.

Obviously it is a matter of opinion as to whether he is being denied fouls but there are the statistics.

Chelsea centre-back Wesley Fofana has withdrawn from France's squad ahead of their Uefa Nations League matches against Israel and Italy.

Fofana, who played the duration of the Blues' 1-1 draw with Arsenal on Sunday, has pulled out of his nation's squad due to a knee issue.

Inter Milan defender Benjamin Pavard has been called up in Fofana's place.

I've been in that position many times - stepping up from the Championship into the Premier League.

You can get beaten three, four or five times, and it's difficult to comprehend that after a season of constant winning. It's a complete mentality shift and you've got to put games to bed.

One lad who has been an outstanding signing for Ipswich Town and has got a huge future ahead of him is Liam Delap. I love him.

He's much more exciting than his dad was, let me tell you that.

It was a great performance from Ipswich Town - their best performance of the season I'd say.

It was nice to see Sam Szmodics and Liam Delap getting the goals as they are two players who have done great for them so far this season.

It's a well-deserved win and I hope that this type of win can be the momentum shift that they need for the rest of the season.

Tottenham have been inconsistent as always, but still with the run of results they've had, a win against them can shift Ipswich to really believe in that dressing room that they can go and get more wins.

It's just that first win which is what you really need to get that confidence. Then it can really kick on.

Arteta telling his team they need to win isn't as silly as it sounds. Performances in recent weeks from Arsenal made it clear the players were playing not to lose.We need to go deep in several cup competitions for him to keep his job.

Is it the players who are letting Ange Postecoglou down? Is it the players who don't suit the system?

Micky van de Ven is a huge loss for them. He covers up a lot of mess with his pace and he has got that ability to recover. I don't think Radu Dragusin quite has that.

I saw Spurs dismantle Aston Villa in that second half and you thought it's their opportunity to kick on against Ipswich Town at home next. But this is so like Postecoglou's Spurs - they conceded first for the 13th time in 15 home league matches in 2024.

That is unacceptable from any Premier League team - never mind from a club of the stature of Tottenham.

I was one of those people who gave Tottenham some praise after their Carabao Cup performance against Manchester City. Then they went on to beat Aston Villa, and I thought this is a Tottenham side that is finally showing some backbone.

The worrying thing for me was also their performance against Galatasaray in the Europa League. They were absolutely bullied there. They weren't good on the ball and couldn't keep possession.

You look at the Spurs backline and Radu Dragusin is showing that he's not quite there yet at the Premier League level. The senior players need to show a bit more responsibility.

  9. Boost for Scotland as Lewandowski withdraws from Poland squadpublished at 12:52 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November

Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski has withdrawn from Poland's squad ahead of their matches against Portugal and Scotland in the Uefa Nations League.

Poland captain Lewandowski, 36, is his nation's all-time leading appearance maker and all-time leading goal scorer, has withdrawn due to a back injury.

Poland currently sit third in Group A1 in the Nations League, three points clear of Scotland, bottom of the table.

The side who finishes third in League A of the Nations League will face a side finishing second in League B in a relegation play-off. The side finishing bottom will be relegated.

Should there be three or fewer points between Poland and Scotland going into their meeting on next Monday night, their match could in theory serve as a Nations League relegation decider.

Another Notts based Arsenal fan here. Not as concerned at this stage as others. Considering the games we’ve played so far (including away games at City, Villa, Tottenham and now Chelsea where we’ve picked up a total of 8 out of 12 points) it can easily be argued we’ve had a more difficult start than the other title contenders so far, having played 7 out of the remaining top 10 teams in the league so far - only teams out of those we haven’t faced yet are Fulham and Forest, who we are up against next. If we get past the festive fixtures and are still 9 points or more behind, then I might think differently.

    Neil

There is a long, long way to go in the season. We've seen time and time again teams start incredibly well only to fall away later on (as an Arsenal fan, I should know). Liverpool will have a slump too - injuries and a run of dropped points. Guaranteed.

  11. 'I'm not convinced by Sanchez at all'published at 12:44 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November

    Phil McNulty Q&A

Robert Sanchez of Chelsea makes a save.Image source, Getty Images

Saeed Lawal: Good morning, Phil. Chelsea are currently third, having played six of the current top eight. They have received so much criticism for the size of their squad. Seeing the injuries to key players at City and Arsenal, what do you make of Chelsea’s deep and strong squad and how far do you think they can go this season?

Phil: Hi, Saeed. I think Chelsea have a high-quality, strong squad and, given the way the Premier League is shaping this season, could easily have a crack at making the top four.

They do need to start beating the teams they will regard as rivals, having lost at Liverpool and drawn with Manchester United and Arsenal in the last couple of weeks. They also lost at home to Manchester City on the opening weekend.

Areas of concern? I think they need an upgrade in goal. I am not convinced by Robert Sanchez at all. And, despite Nicolas Jackson’s improvement, I also believe Enzo Maresca needs a reliable finisher.

I do see improvements, though, and they should be setting their sights on the top four and a place in next season’s Champions League.

  12. Carsley could face a number of England pull outspublished at 12:40 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November

    Alex Howell
    BBC football news reporter

The England squad are due to join up today at St George's Park ahead of their matches against Greece and the Republic of Ireland.

England need two win both matches to have a realistic chance of being promoted back to the top level of the Nations League after the loss to Greece at Wembley last month.

Interim head coach Lee Carsley may be faced with a few challenges ahead of picking his team for the match in Athens on Thursday.

Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Anthony Gordon were all substituted at the weekend through injury and the chance of all of them joining up seem slim.

Carsley has already named a young squad with uncapped trio Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Lewis Hall and Curtis Jones included but he may have to go back into the U21 squad and call up more reinforcements before he starts planning for the next two matches.

  13. 'Lopetegui needs to improve and fast'published at 12:35 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November

    Phil McNulty Q&A

Julen Lopetegui gestures on the touchlineImage source, Getty Images

Joe, Brentwood: Hi Phil, West Ham were woeful again this weekend. Despite spending over £100m in the summer, they are worse than they were last season (which wasn’t great!). Do you think Julen Lopetegui will be sacked this week?

Phil: Hello, Joe. No, I don’t think Lopetegui will be sacked this week. West Ham’s owners are not known for being trigger happy when it comes to managers – and you suspect he might also need a hefty pay-off having only been there a matter of months.

There is no doubt, though, that there has not been any sort of improvement on David Moyes despite that big summer outlay and the West Ham natives are already restless. He needs to improve and fast.

What I never got was the notion that Lopetegui would be producing his own version of “heavy metal football” after the perceived pragmatism of Moyes. He never has and he never will.

It was almost a case of anyone but Moyes by the end. I agree Moyes’ time at West Ham had run its natural course – never forget he won a European trophy in that time – but I was never convinced Lopetegui would be a serious upgrade.

So far, those suspicions have been confirmed.

  14. 'Van Nistelrooy couldn't have done much more'published at 12:30 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November

    Phil McNulty Q&A

Ruud van Nistelrooy applauds the fans.Image source, Getty Images

@CF3Loyal on X: Does Ruud van Nistelrooy’s success at Manchester United as interim manager, in addition to his relationship with the club, fans and players, cause a potential issue for Ruben Amorim when he takes over - assuming that he remains as part of his management team?

Phil: Well, we should find out the answer to whether he will be part of that management team very soon.

Van Nistelrooy could not have done much more in his spell as interim manager. He clearly loved the role and seems to want to stay at United. The fans who adore him will have no objection to that.

The problem is that Ruben Amorim has a tried and trusted, very close-knit, support team and it is hard to see where Van Nistelrooy would fit into that.

It is also difficult to see a powerful, opinionated personality such as Van Nistelrooy wanting to be a silent partner in that group simply to stay at Manchester United.

It is a very delicate situation and one of the first tasks Amorim has to address.

  16. 'I have to talk with van Nistelrooy'published at 12:22 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November

    Media caption,

I'm ready for the challenge - Amorim before starting role as Man Utd manager

Ruben Amorim has an extensive to-do list for when he arrives at Old Trafford, including what role outgoing interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy will have at Manchester United.

Van Nistelrooy, one of United's great strikers of the modern era, has become a hero in the dugout too by winning three and drawing one of his four matches in charge.

The Dutchman was brought in during the summer as assistant to sacked United manager Erik ten Hag, but his role under Amorim - if any - is unclear.

"About a legend of a club like Manchester, he did a great job," Amorim said of van Nistelrooy. "I have to talk with him tomorrow and then I will explain everything.

"I'm very clear and I will tell you like it is. So let's wait until tomorrow. Maybe we are not going to talk. So let's wait for the next few weeks."

Questions also surround the tactics Amorim will use at United. The Portuguese coach played a 3-4-3 at Sporting, and it remains to be seen how players like Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford will fit into this system.

"I know how I am going to play in the beginning because you have to start with a structure that you know and then you will adapt with the players that you have," he said.

"Some injuries or no injuries, what kind of players, the abilities to defend, to attack. I will discover that in the next few weeks.

"We don't have a lot of time to train so I have to show something that I know very well. So you can take whatever you want from that question."

@CitizenSuburbia on X: Who have been the over-performers and under-performers in the Premier League so far?

Phil: Good question. Won’t go through every team but here are some of mine.

Over-performers: Liverpool. Nottingham Forest. Brighton. Fulham.

Under-performers: Spurs. Manchester United. West Ham United. Everton. Crystal Palace. Wolverhampton Wanderers. Southampton.

    Phil McNulty Q&A

Everton manager Sean Dyche arrives for the Premier League match against West HamImage source, Getty Images

George Whittaker: When will the media ever highlight how bad Sean Dyche has been this season? Easiest run of fixtures as per Opta stats. Not improved at all from last season. Same boring football hoping for draws.

Phil: Hi George. We’ve had lots of discussion about Sean Dyche on these Q&As.

There is certainly a growing frustration from Everton fans at the style of football being played under Sean Dyche, although I do think it was a case of needs must last season, he did a good job getting Everton to safety. It was not about style at that point. It was about safety.

This season, however, has been really tough to watch and results have been poor as well. The return of 10 points from their first 11 games is well below what would have been expected given those fixtures and they now have a tough run coming up.

I do not think Everton, given that a new ownership is in the process of being confirmed, will consider changing managers unless it really becomes a dire emergency. I am sorry to say this to you, but ambitions this season must be limited to staying up before going into the new stadium at Bramley Moore Dock, which offers the opportunity of a fresh start and re-set under American billionaire Dan Friedkin after years of crisis and chaos.

Dyche has a track record of being able to do that.

I would, though, be very surprised if Sean Dyche takes Everton into that new stadium. His contract expires at the end of the season and history shows new owners nearly always want their own managers. I do not expect Friedkin to be any different.

Well, Tim's mid morning fishing expedition (see 09.43) has successfully reeled in a few disgruntled fish! I agree that Arsenal are out of the running now but City have shown year after year that there's barely any points deficit which puts them out of it at this stage. Regardless of what's going on at our rivals, if Slot pulls it off he'll be an instant hero at the club.
