Sam Ashford was prefered to Cliftonville's all-time leading goal scorer Joe Gormley and their top scorer this season Ben Wilson.

It looked a big call from Jim Magilton but he has paid back his manager's faith with that goal.

On days like today you need your star players to perform and in the first 20-25 minutes the Hale brothers were anonymous.

Then after that they became involved, they got more of the ball and started setting things up.

There was a sense of purpose and a sense of direction.

Anything that could go wrong for Cliftonville in that first half did go wrong.

They lost a goal from poor defending from a free-kick and then two key players, David Odumosu and Odhran Casey, to injury.

It will be a huge ask for Jim Magilton's side to get back into this one, but they have shown in flashes, that they are a threat going forward.

Ronan Hale and Sam Ashford will need more service, whilst they also have their top goal scorer Ben Wilson and the club's all-time leading scorer Joe Gormley waiting in on the bench.

  20. 'Magilton will be frustrated'published at 15:30 British Summer Time 4 May

    HT: Cliftonville 0-1 Linfield

    David Jeffrey
Former Larne, Linfield & Ballymena manager on BBC Two NI

I think the frustrating thing for Jim Magilton is that the goal was avoidable.

Yes the free-kick was soft but in the lead up to it, the ball was given away needlessly and that will have frustrated Jim.

But Linfield took advantage and what a header!
