Borussia Dortmund’s 1-0 win over Newcastle last time out was their first ever meeting in European competition, while they last won home and away against an English side in a UEFA Champions League campaign in 1996-97 against Manchester United (1-0 wins home and away in the semi-finals).
Newcastle are winless in their last two games against German sides in European competition (D1 L1), after winning each of their first four such matches between 2001 and 2003.
This will be Borussia Dortmund’s 150th match in the UEFA Champions League (W69 D31 L49), becoming just the second German side to reach this total since the competition’s inception in 1992-93, after Bayern Munich (285).
Newcastle drew 0-0 at Milan in their previous away game in the UEFA Champions League this season, despite facing 25 shots and only attempting six themselves. Indeed, Newcastle managed just one shot on target in the entire match and it arrived in the 95th minute through Sean Longstaff (Milan had nine shots on target).
The last English manager to win an away game against a German side in the UEFA Champions League was Bobby Robson, who led Newcastle to a 3-1 win at Bayer Leverkusen in February 2003. Since then, English managers are winless in three such matches (D1 L2): Harry Redknapp (2-2 v Werder Bremen), Frank Lampard (1-4 v Bayern Munich) and Graham Potter (0-1 v Borussia Dortmund).
Borussia Dortmund are unbeaten in their last six home games in the UEFA Champions League (W3 D3), and have only conceded one goal in this run. Indeed, Dortmund could keep four consecutive clean sheets at home for the first time ever in the European Cup/UEFA Champions League (currently on a run of three).
The last Newcastle player to score a goal away from home in the UEFA Champions League was Alan Shearer in March 2003, who netted a brace against Internazionale. Indeed, Eddie Howe’s side only managed one shot on target in their last away game against Milan, with Union Berlin the only side to have had fewer away from home in the competition this term (0 v Real Madrid).
Alexander Isak is the only player to have played for both current club Newcastle and Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League, although this will be his first appearance in the competition at Signal Iduna Park. His only game for Dortmund in the competition came away to APOEL Nicosia in October 2017, as an 18-year-old.
In the opening three rounds of this UEFA Champions League campaign, only Victor Osimhen (13) has had more shots without scoring than Borussia Dortmund’s Donyell Malen (12). The Dutchman has hit the target on four occasions this term, accounting for 44% of the team’s total shots on target (4/9).
Bruno Guimarães has recovered possession (24) and applied more pressures (214) than any other Newcastle player in the UEFA Champions League this season. The Brazilian has been booked in his last two games in the competition for the Magpies, however, and could be the first player to be shown a yellow card in three consecutive UEFA Champions League appearances for the club.
