    Too soon?

Whether you want to watch it or not, England's next game is against Republic of Ireland on 7 September in Dublin to kick off their Nations League campaign.

In their last meeting in 2020, Jude Bellingham, aged 17, made his international debut as a second-half substitute in a 3-0 victory at Wembley.

Nations League promotion will be the aim for England after they dropped down to League B after finishing bottom of Group A3 in last year's Nations League.

The Three Lions also play Greece and Finland in their group.

    BBC Radio 5 live

England fan Amir called in to this morning's 606 phone-in to share his thoughts on what went wrong for England in the Euro 2024 final:

"I think Harry Kane is world class. We need to look at the big picture. What [Gareth] Southgate has done is phenomenal but I think he’s reached his limit. This is a great time for the FA to change things.

"We have a phenomenal squad. Every player wants to play for England now.

"Do we go domestic or foreign for a manager?

"What frustrates everyone is the potential. Jude Bellingham is the closest thing we’ve had to [Zinedine] Zidane. [Cole] Palmer plays football like he’s playing a PlayStation.

"If I was the FA, I’d be having conversations with [Jurgen] Klopp."

Andy spoke to Robbie Savage and Natalie Pick on the 606 phone-in that he thinks Gareth Southgate lacks courage:

"I’m feeling gutted. I'm really upset. Look at the pattern, we go behind, we make changes, we score.

"Have more courage. We were so much better when the changes were made. Why not from the start?

"On the subject of Harry Kane, there comes a point when every great player needs to be dropped. How often do they get to play together?

"I went to the first [England] 50 games at the new Wembley, I have stopped going because it was boring.

"I would have potentially left [Phil] Foden out and put Cole Palmer in and take Kane out for [Ollie] Watkins."

Talking about coping mechanisms for dealing with the morning after the night before...

An England football fan who had "Euro Winners" tattooed on his leg before Sunday's final says he will not cover it up and has no regrets.

Dan Thomas, from Swindon in Wiltshire, received a tattoo of the Henri Delaunay Cup and the words "England Euro 2024 Winners" ahead of the final that England went on to lose 2-1 against Spain in Berlin.

Mr Thomas, 29, now says he is confident the Three Lions will win the next Euro's tournament in 2028 - when the UK and Ireland are the hosts - and may get an alteration.

He said he "still loves" the tattoo and has urged other England fans to get their own to show their support ahead of the next tournament.

The data consultant said: "We came close, I don't regret the tattoo.

"If anything, I don't think it'd be hard to change the four into an eight in four years time. I won't be covering it up. Absolutely no regrets and I still love it."

On a positive note...at least as England fans we know how to feel on mornings like this!

    James

Spain much deserved winners last night. Please no-one criticise the players or Gareth Southgate - remember how dire it was before 2016! I can't help but feel this generation have had their chances now and it'll be quite a while before another opportunity like this comes along. Let's be grateful we've seen what we've seen - although for my own sanity I think I'll keep future tournaments at arm's length!

    Anon

That's your choice Anon, but just to mark your card, the next Euros will be in the UK and Ireland in 2028, which may be difficult to keep at arm's-length.

This post-mortem is all well and good (and probably needed) but what about some sort of Goal of the Tournament montage, perhaps with a soundtrack of Life of Riley by the Lightning Seeds followed by a poll to pick the winner? I run a sweepstake. I need to give a prize for goal of the tournament and need something official, so I don't get accused of a stitch up! Yamal and Bellingham are the front runners, but I am open to suggestions for others...

It is a measure of the packed state of the international football calendar that the end of Euro 2024 and Copa America is followed immediately by the start of preparations for the 2024-25 domestic campaign.

Nottingham Forest played at Chesterfield on Saturday, Bournemouth fly to the United States for matches against Wrexham - who also play Chelsea - and Arsenal, who also play Manchester United and Liverpool.

United are travelling to Norway for this evening's opening pre-season game against Rosenborg.

The new season ends with the expanded 32-team Club World Cup, the final of which is played on 13 July.

No wonder players' union bosses are not happy.

Argentina beat Colombia to win a record 16th Copa America but the game was marred by the kick-off being delayed by 80 minutes because of trouble outside the ground in Miami on Monday.

Lautaro Martinez struck in the second half of extra time from Giovani lo Celso's through ball to secure the win.

Captain Lionel Messi was left in tears when he had to be replaced midway through the second half after injuring himself while chasing for the ball – but was celebrating his country’s third successive major tournament at the final whistle.

Kick-off was delayed because of chaos outside the Hard Rock Stadium.

Organisers said ticketless fans tried to get into the ground, leaving some fans waiting for hours in the Miami heat for the gates to open.

Fans and police officers and security clashed with several arrests made. Several supporters needed treatment from paramedics.

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Sir Geoff Hurst told BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast that the team spirit shown by England's players at Euro 2024 reminded him of the 1966 World Cup-winning squad:

"Being a player who has done it, I understand the team spirit he’s [Gareth Southgate] engendered in this group, which has been better than we’ve seen in previous managers," said Hurst.

"We had that a lot in 1966, the team spirit and a fantastic manager, and that’s been exactly the same. The team work and team spirit that he has with these fantastic bunch of players."

Sir Geoff Hurst, who scored a hat-trick in the 1966 World Cup final against West Germany at Wembley to help England men's team win their only major trophy, spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast about Sunday's defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final:

"We played the best team at the tournament, it’s a one-off game and like everyone else in the country I was bitterly disappointed about losing the game," said the 82-year-old former West Ham striker.

"But you’ve got to look at it overall - two Euros finals, semi finals of a World Cup. Under Gareth Southgate, it’s been absolutely fantastic.

"We’ve got a group of young players who are young enough to play in the next tournament and, of course, that’s where it all starts, at grassroots level. We had the third youngest side [in the tournament] but with a lot of experience.

"I'm not going to be negative - I'm bitterly disappointed, but my view around Southgate is that it’s a very stressful job.

"My own personal view is that he [Southgate] will say 'enough is enough' because that’s a long time in an incredibly stressful job, managing the national team."

Pickford, 30, was speaking to BBC Sport after manager Gareth Southgate had addressed his players in the dressing room.

"He [Southgate] just mentioned that was the 14th match we have had in the Euros and the first match we have lost in normal time," Pickford revealed. "We have been on a hell of a journey and we are devastated tonight - there is nothing more to say."

Marc Cucurella hit back at criticism from pundit Gary Neville after playing a crucial role in Spain's win on Sunday.

During the group stages of the tournament, ex-England defender Neville said that he thought Cucurella playing as left-back for Spain was one of the reasons they "probably can't go all the way".

After providing an assist for Mikel Oyarzabal's winner in the final, Chelsea defender Cucurella posted on his Instagram story, external, saying: "We went all the way Gary, thanks for your support."

The 25-year-old joined Chelsea in a deal worth over £60m in 2022, but suffered an underwhelming campaign last season as the Blues finished sixth.

However, he has been a first-choice starter for Spain manager Luis de la Fuente throughout Euro 2024 as the team won all seven of their matches, conceding four goals along the way.

Spain manager Luis de la Fuente, 63, continued a run of victories with the national set-up having previously helped his nation claim the European title with the Under-19s and U21s.

In that successful U19s team in 2015 were Rodri, who was named the best player of Euro 2024, Mikel Merino, who scored the winner against Germany in the quarter-finals, and first-choice keeper Unai Simon.

The hero of the final Mikel Oyarzabal, Merino, three-goal Dani Olmo and regular starter Fabian Ruiz all featured in the U21s final in 2019.

De la Fuente, who took over the senior side in 2022, has never managed in La Liga and was sacked from his last club job, Alaves, after just four months in 2011.

"De la Fuente knew most of these players from the academies and they are growing as a team," said Juan Mata on BBC One.

"He deserves all the credit - him, his assistants and the players."
