While England's Harry Kane and Spain forward Dani Olmo finished with a share of Euro 2024's top scorer prize, the remainder of the tournament's top awards went to players on the winning team.

Manchester City's midfield lynchpin Rodri was named player of the tournament, while teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, 17, who scored a goal and weighed in with four assists - the most in the tournament - earned the young player award.

    Spain 2-1 England

England manager Gareth Southgate says a lot fell on captain Harry Kane's shoulders during the Euro 2024 campaign.

The 30-year-old Bayern Munich striker finished as joint top scorer with three goals - shared with Spain's Dani Olmo and four others.

But he was substituted for Ollie Watkins in the 61st minute of Sunday night's final after managing just one touch in the opposition box.

Kane missed the final game of the Bundesliga season because of a back issue and Southgate admitted that likely played a part in him being unable to deliver his best form in Germany.

"Harry has come into the tournament having had an injury at the end of the season and he has played a lot of minutes," said the England boss.

"He has led the team incredibly well. We've lost a lot of leadership in the group with injuries, a lot fell on Harry's shoulders and he has done exceptionally well."

I am over it already - our loss. The better side won at the end of the day. As an England supporter I have been strictly conditioned for sporting disappointments, particularly with football. Yesterday, it was either going to be pure elation or simply par for the course. Onwards & upwards.

England captain Harry Kane told BBC Radio 5 Live that Sunday's defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final will "hurt for a long time".

"This was another tough moment for the team and for me personally," said the 30-year-old Bayern Munich striker.

"Credit to Spain, they played well. We couldn't find our rhythm in the game and in these big moments you get punished.

"It was a tough tournament physically and mentally. You get so close to the highest of the highs, the pinnacle of our careers, and now everyone is at the lowest of the lows.

"We haven't found a way to win that trophy and it is going to hurt for a long time."

Congrats to Spain, clearly the best team in the tournament and fully deserved to win. England grinded their way to the final, but ultimately fell short once again. Southgate has done very well to bring harmony to the squad from where his picked them up. But it really must be said, he really misused his squad. Watkins, Toney, Gordon, Palmer, and Trent will all have the right to feel aggrieved by their relative lack of playing time, especially considering how much better England played with them on the pitch.

  6. 'A good thing for football' - Spain's victory caps off perfect campaignpublished at 07:44 British Summer Time 15 July

    Spain 2-1 England

Football often divides opinion - but everyone was united to hail Spain's Euro 2024 success as fully deserved.

La Roja won all seven games without needing penalties, a record at a European Championship. A 2-1 win over England in the final made them European champions for an unprecedented fourth time.

Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton said on BBC Radio 5 Live: "It is a good thing for football that Spain won the tournament with the brand they have played."

BBC Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker, who used to play for Barcelona, said: "It is a hard defeat for England to take but in some ways, it is a victory for attacking football."

Former Spain midfielder Juan Mata, on BBC One, added: "We played great football, always tried to win the games and I think we deserve to win this tournament. We are so proud of them and really believe they can keep growing and believing and keep winning trophies."

Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague said: "Spain surprised me again. They said 'we are going at it without fear by being brave and courageous' - that is what has won them the tournament."

You cannot argue that over the tournament and for the lion's share of this match, Spain have shown what a quality outfit they really are with some exciting talent.

They have got a lovely way of playing and creating chances and scored two very, very good goals with quick, slick passing from wide areas.

England did their best to hang in there and produced a brilliant moment from Cole Palmer but, yet again, we end up in this position. It's heart-breaking, but you can’t disagree that Spain deserve it.

Euro 2024: England boss Gareth Southgate says 'now is not the time' to speak about future

Gareth Southgate said he believes there is "a lot to look forward to" for England after his youthful squad reached a second successive Euros final, but admitted that was "not any consolation" after becoming the first international manager to suffer back-to-back final defeats.

"The players will take enormous credit for getting us to where we did but when you’re as close as that, you have to take your chance," Southgate told ITV.

"They have represented the shirt with pride and haven’t been beaten until the very end. I just think Spain had more control of the game.

"England are in a really good position in terms of the experience they have. Most of this squad will be around for the next World Cup and maybe the next Euros.

"There’s a lot to look forward to but at this moment, it’s not any consolation."

Southgate added that it was "hard to reflect" on his eight years in charge but has no doubts England can be successful in future major tournaments.

"Of course to take England to two finals has never been done but we came here to win and we haven’t been able to do that," he added.

"England have some fabulous players. We have been consistently back in the matches that matter. It’s the last step we haven’t been able to do."

    Spain 2-1 England

England manager Gareth Southgate says "now is not the time" to make a decision on his future.

The Three Lions were beaten 2-1 by Spain in the Euro 2024 final in Berlin on Sunday.

Southgate, 53, has been in charge since 2016 but his current contract is due to expire in December.

Asked about his future, Southgate told the BBC: "Now is not the time for me to speak about that. I need to talk to the right people and give myself a bit of time.

"To get to another final... it was a privilege to have the opportunity. But to come up short is hard at the moment."

    Oyarzabal scores late for Spain

England’s quest to end 58 years of pain and disappointment ended in failure as they were beaten by Spain in the Euro 2024 final at Berlin's Olympiastadion.

Gareth Southgate's side were sunk by Mikel Oyarzabal's late winner to leave England heartbroken again in a second successive European Championship final and unable to end the long wait for success for the men's team.

Spain's young star wingers combined to give them the lead two minutes after the break as Lamine Yamal's pass opened up space for Nico Williams to beat England keeper Jordan Pickford with a powerful low finish.

England captain Harry Kane was out of sorts once more and was substituted on the hour and it was Cole Palmer - on for Kobbie Mainoo - who raised hopes of another dramatic comeback with a composed left-foot strike after 73 minutes.

It was Spain, however, who snatched the win four minutes from time as Oyarzabal slid home Marc Cucurella's cross to leave England the nearly men once more.
