A big move made by Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca came in goal.

The Italian opted to start Danish goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen instead of Spain's Robert Sanchez, who has made multiple errors in recent weeks.

Jorgensen did concede, but through no fault of his own after Jarrod Bowen latched on to a poor Levi Colwill backpass to put West Ham ahead before half-time.

"In this moment, Robert needs rest and Filip was very good," Maresca said following the Blues London derby victory.

Chelsea's new signing Mathis Amougou is likely to join Strasbourg next summer.

The 19-year-old midfielder joined on deadline day in a £12m move from St Etienne and will initially serve part of Enzo Maresca's squad.

Chelsea need the cover in midfield for Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia and Enzo Fernandez after letting Cesare Casadei and Carney Chukwuemeka leave in January.

It will allow Amougou to develop around the quality of talent at the Premier League club and acclimatise to life in England.

But a return to France with partner club Strasbourg, which shares the same BlueCo ownership, is also on the cards to continue giving him the minutes he needs to develop longer term.

Meanwhile, it is increasingly looking like Brazil international Andrey Santos has outgrown Strasbourg through his sensational performances.

Santos, 20, will likely return to Stamford Bridge but is also beginning to find clubs are interested in signing him on a permanent basis.

The January window was one all about outgoings for Chelsea rather than incomings.

To bolster their first-team squad, centre-back Trevoh Chalobah was recalled from his loan spell at Crystal Palace.

Young midfielder Mathis Amougou, whose £12m move is expected to be confirmed from St Etienne, will provide short-term cover in midfield following a number of exits.

Italian midfielder Cesare Casadei was sold to Napoli, while Axel Disasi, Renato Veiga, Ben Chilwell, Carney Chukwuemeka and Caleb Wiley have all departed on loan.

Portuguese forward Joao Felix is also closing in on a loan move to AC Milan, which is yet to be formally announced.

    In

    • Trevoh Chalobah (recalled from Crystal Palace loan)
    • Aaron Anselmino (returned from Boca Juniors loan)
    • David Datro Fofana (returned from Goztepe loan)

    Out

    • Cesare Casadei (Torino)
    • Renato Veiga (Juventus, loan)
    • Ben Chilwell (Crystal Palace, loan)
    • Caleb Wiley (Watford, loan)

  6. How Chelsea's West Ham win affects the Premier League tablepublished at 12:06 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February

Chelsea picked up a crucial win in their battle for Champions League football on a weekend where Manchester City, Newcastle, Bournemouth and Aston Villa all suffered defeats.

The Blues' win saw them climb above City and Newcastle up to fourth, putting Enzo Maresca's side two points clear in fourth with 14 games remaining.

Because of the success of English clubs in Europe this season, it is highly likely that England will receive one of the two bonus Champions League spots this season, meaning a fifth place finish would be enough for next season's Champions League.

Chelsea returned to the top four in the Premier League after coming from behind to beat West Ham on former manager Graham Potter's return to Stamford Bridge.

After fellow top-four contenders Manchester City and Newcastle lost at the weekend, the Blues were made to work hard for the three points by the visitors who led through Jarrod Bowen at the break.

But substitute Pedro Neto equalised for Enzo Maresca's side in the second half before Cole Palmer's cross looped over Hammers goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, which took a big deflection off Aaron Wan-Bissaka to gift the win to the home side.

Curley63: Morning Phil. I would like your assessment of West Ham’s January transfer activity. Whilst a striker was desperately needed & it’s nice to see JWP back, I can’t help feeling that we are worryingly short of a decent centre half. Kilman is playing well in an ageing/makeshift back 3, but other than that there is Mavropanos, who to me is not Prenier League standard & Todibo, who has been reported doesn’t want to be at the club!

Potter is most definitely steadying the ship & encouraging academy players. Also I am pleased Steiden has gone after the disaster of last summer!

I certainly accept your point that West Ham might have done more, certainly in defence, but I truly believe they have done a really smart piece of business in bringing in Evan Ferguson on loan from Brighton.

He is a genuine talent, still only 20, who has been held back by injuries. He will also enjoy working under Graham Potter again. I also think James Ward-Prowse is another who could flourish under Potter.

I think Tim Steidten’s days have been numbered for a while. He had an uneasy relationship with former managers David Moyes and Julen Lopetegui and it is clear Potter will want his own people around him and move the club forward in his own way.

The Hammers still have a very talented squad, though. Now it is up to Potter to get the best out of them – but really like that Ferguson deal.

'I have a concern that this was an oversight that might cost Arsenal'published at 11:46 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February

    Phil McNulty Q&A

    Phil McNulty

Guy from Nottingham: Hi Phil. To me, an Arsenal fan, our lack of investment in attacking players over the past few windows shows a lack of ambition from the board. Selling Emile Smith-Rowe, Eddie Nketiah, losing Fabio Vieira and only bringing in Raheem Sterling as a replacement. Do you think I’m being over critical or are Arsenal lacking something?

It’s a question that has been posed a lot, Guy. I certainly do not regard Arsenal as a club that lacks ambition.

I’m not sure they have missed Nketiah or Vieira, and while I really rate Smith-Rowe, he may have struggled for game time.

The wider question, and one I can certainly understand, is whether Arsenal should have signed a reliable 20-goal a season striker to help them challenge for the big prizes?

I think this should have been addressed last summer, perhaps by signing Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig. January is a notoriously tough time to acquire real quality in that position.

I have a concern that this was an oversight that might cost Arsenal but we can only make that judgement at the end of the season.

Everton 'just could not find the right fit'published at 11:34 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February

    Phil McNulty Q&A

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Steve, Wirral: Hi, Phil. Do you think Everton have made a mistake not signing a striker given the injuries to Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Armando Broja? We’re only left with one recognised striker in Beto.

Morning, Steve. I think Everton desperately wanted a striker but given their current financial situation, where they still need to be aware of PSR, it was very difficult to find the right player at a good price.

The fact they had two domestic loans already in Jack Harrison and Broja did not help their cause, but I am 100% certain they did try to sign one. They just could not find the right fit.

I accept this will be frustrating for Everton fans, but I also see the club’s point of view that there was absolutely no point wasting money on someone who was simply another body in the building rather than a player who would add something.

It is actually a good sign, in my opinion, that David Moyes is so meticulous about the players he signs and I am sure Everton will be more ambitious in the summer.
