It's been said that Ange Postecoglou was key in bringing Mathys Tel to Tottenham but their new signing says Harry Kane was also influential.

Tel told Spurs' official channels: "He told me this is a big club with a lot of very good people.

"[He said] the pitch is very nice, the training centre is very good and if you go there you will enjoy it.

"Yes, everything was positive from [Harry] Kane."

  5. 'One of the most highly-rated players of his generation'published at 09:30 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February

    Julien Laurens
European football expert on The Football News Show

European football expert Julien Laurens talking to The Football News Show about Tottenham's signing of Mathys Tel:

I think Spurs fans should be very excited because he's a wonderful talent.

One of the most highly-rated players of his generation.

He's only 19 so he's still a very young player, but in terms of pure talent; his pace, the technical skill that he has, as a striker, as a second-striker - probably his two best positions but I think he can also play a bit wider.

A wonderful signing on a loan so Spurs don't really invest that much in him and then you'll see in the summer if the loan has been successful. There is an option to buy and he can become a permanent player.

Tottenham, who have struggled in recent months with a number of injury issues, did sign four players, although two of which came in the final 48 hours of the window.

Centre-back Kevin Danso and winger Mathys Tel both arrived on loan from Lens and Bayern Munich respectively prior to the window closing.

Paul MacDonald from FootballTransfers.com said: "Tottenham got some business over the line, but again in true Levy style, leaving it late to try and strike deals. It's just not as possible to do that with other Premier League teams mid-season as maybe it once was, as he found out with the Marc Guehi bid.

"Worth noting that Spurs have now spent around £370m since Ange joined in the summer of 2023. Granted, he raised £100m instantly from the sale of Harry Kane, but that's roughly on a par with Man Utd for the same period and second only to Chelsea in the Premier League."

  12. Has PSR had any effect on transfers?published at 09:12 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February

Jhon Duran looks onImage source, Getty Images

Speaking on whether the restrictions of the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules had any effect in the January transfer window, Paul MacDonald from FootballTransfers.com said: "There's definitely a remnant of that. All 20 teams escaped without punishment for 23/24, but 24/25 is the last year of PSR before we move to the Squad Cost Control Ratio, and so teams just don't want to slip up if they can avoid it.

"They want to give themselves a clean platform in the new rules, which are yet to be properly defined. That's definitely impacted United, who obviously need major work, and Newcastle, who have spent heavily in the past few years, limiting what they can do now.

"I would say that [Jhon] Duran leaving for Saudi was a good deal for Villa in that regard, too."

  14. Why so little business between Premier League clubs?published at 09:05 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February

    Ben ChilwellImage source, Getty Images

There was very little movement between Premier League clubs in the winter window.

On deadline day, Ben Chilwell moved from Chelsea to Crystal Palace, Evan Ferguson joined West Ham from Brighton and 18-year-old defender Somto Boniface joined Ipswich from Chelsea.

Prior to that there were just three moves between Premier League clubs throughout all of January - Marcus Rashford's move to Villa and Ipswich signing both Jaden Philogene from Villa for around £20m and Julio Enciso on loan from Brighton.

Paul MacDonald from FootballTransfers.com said: "It's a case of Premier League teams now having a level of revenue - across the league - to know that they can command a huge fee from the teams near the top.

"There's no real need to sell or do business at a knockdown price unless profit and sustainability rules (PSR) really demands it.

"Alexander Isak is a prime example. Newcastle are struggling to spend because of PSR, but there's absolutely no obligation to sell on their part, either. Arsenal probably had very little chance of getting that deal done.

"Lastly, it's a competitive Champions League race this year; teams don't want to sell assets with such a valuable prize potentially available."

  17. How much did Premier League clubs spend?published at 08:58 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February

Premier League clubs spent around £370m in the winter transfer window, significantly up on the £100m paid out last year, with Manchester City spending almost as much as the other 19 top-flight teams combined.

While spending is up, it is still way down on the 2023 record of £815m.

The £50m signing of midfielder Nico Gonzalez from Porto just before Monday's 23:00 GMT deadline took Manchester City's total spending to around £180m, according to Football Transfers, as manager Pep Guardiola was given the backing to try and improve the defending champions' current form.

City's is the second-highest spend in a winter window ever, behind Chelsea in 2023, who spent £275m.

  18. Man City open up cheque bookpublished at 08:56 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February

Manchester City's spending almost outweighs that of the rest of the Premier League clubs combined, with the acquisition of Nico Gonzalez taking their outlay to about £180m.

Centre-back Abdukodir Khusanov was the first through the Etihad doors during this window, with City paying £33.6m to Lens for a player who only cost the French club £84,000 in July 2023.

Palmeiras defender Reis arrived for £29.6m, despite the 19-year-old only making 22 senior career appearances and Marmoush, who scored 15 goals in 17 Bundesliga appearances this season for Eintracht Frankfurt, was the third signing for £59m.

"Manchester City have been very successful financially over recent years," football finance expert Kieran Maguire told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"Under these profitability and sustainability rules, you are allowed to lose £105m over a rolling three-year period. City have probably made somewhere in the region of £160-170m worth of profit because there has been an awful lot of players leaving the club - as well as the benefits of qualifying for Europe every year, the bonuses from sponsors and broadcasters for winning all of these trophies. From a financial perspective, they are in a really strong position.

"The 115 charges relates to the period 2009-2018, so that, to a certain extent, is ancient history. When it does come to pass that we get a judgement, we will have to have a complete reset I think in what they can spend going forwards."
