The Express reports that Ruben Amorim's appointment is being delayed over the compensation fee Sporting want for his coaching staff.
Sporting and Manchester United have three games over the next week or so, followed by a two-week break for the latest round of international fixtures.
That would seem a convenient time for Ruben Amorim to take charge at Old Trafford, so could these be the final games of his four-and-a-half year spell as Sporting boss?

It is looking increasingly likely Ruben Amorim will not take over as Manchester United manager until after the November international break.
Due to the financial rules Sporting are operating under, they have to announce any agreement reached with United to the Lisbon Stock Exchange and United board member Sir Dave Brailsford did say to fans on his way into Old Trafford last night that the 'deal is done'.
That suggests there could be some kind of announcement today - when both Amorim and Ruud van Nistelrooy are due to speak to the media.
After Friday's game against Estrela, Sporting have a Champions League home game against Manchester City and a league encounter with Amorim's former club Braga.
United entertain Chelsea on Sunday, Greek side PAOK in the Europa League next Thursday and Leicester again the following Sunday.

The Daily Star
Today's Daily Star says that during their Carabao Cup win over Leicester, Manchester United were "ten times better" under interim boss Rudd van Nistelrooy in their first game since the sacking of Erik ten Hag.
We've got a news update from Simon Stone coming up, along with a look at today's newspapers and more reaction to Wednesday's games in England and Scotland.
Aberdeen 2-1 Rangers
Nick McPheat
BBC Sport Scotland
Jimmy Thelin's unbeaten Aberdeen made their biggest statement yet by intensifying the pressure on Rangers manager Philippe Clement with an enthralling Scottish Premiership victory.
The pre-match show at Pittodrie set the tone for a raucous occasion, which the away side were overwhelmed by in a sobering opening period as Nicky Devlin continued his dream season by lashing the intense hosts into the lead.
A three-goal half-time advantage would not have flattered the Dons, who struck the woodwork through Graeme Shinnie and Jamie McGrath had his weak spot kick saved by goalkeeper Jack Butland.
It seemed Aberdeen would pay the price for that wastefulness as Rangers had a Ross McCausland goal disallowed for a narrow offside call before they roared back after the break and deservedly levelled through Nedim Bajrami's fine solo effort.
But the hosts, with a sell-out home crowd backing them, regained the lead as substitute Shayden Morris smashed in on the rebound to move Thelin's men nine points clear of Clement's side after just 10 games.
Celtic 2-0 Dundee
Charlotte Cohen
BBC Sport Scotland
Celtic continued their unbeaten start to the Scottish Premiership season - and stay level with Aberdeen at the summit - after an ultimately comfortable victory over Dundee.
It took Brendan Rodgers' side 60 minutes, and three changes, to get going at Parkhead as Alistair Johnston made it two goals from two games by tapping home Yang Hyun-Jun's cross.
Arne Engels doubled Celtic's lead seven minutes later when he calmly converted from the spot after Kyogo Furuhashi won a penalty.
And the league leaders saw it out from there against a Dundee side who have now won just twice in 10 games and slip to 10th place.
Aston Villa 1-2 Crystal Palace
Daichi Kamada's winner delivered Crystal Palace an impressive victory at Aston Villa that puts them into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.
Substitute Kamada latched on to a poor pass from Diego Carlos and unleashed a fierce low shot from the edge of the area as Palace retook the lead in the 64th minute.
Eberechi Eze had opened the scoring for the away side, rising highest to head in Daniel Munoz's cross from the right.
Leon Bailey crossed into the path of Jhon Duran, who fired low into the bottom corner to level the scoring despite debutant Palace goalkeeper Matt Turner getting a hand to it.
Kamada's goal means that Palace reach the quarter-final stage of the competition for the first time since the 2011-12 season
Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea
Newcastle United cruised past Chelsea to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.
An Alexander Isak strike, quickly followed by an Axel Disasi own goal, were enough to avenge their 2-1 defeat against the same opponents in the Premier League on Sunday.
The game started at a frantic pace with Newcastle's Joelinton striking the post at one end before Renato Veiga's effort was deflected just wide at the other.
Swedish striker Isak, who had netted just twice this season, opened the scoring from close range in the 23rd minute after Sandro Tonali intercepted a loose pass just outside the penalty area.
The hosts doubled their advantage three minutes later when Joe Willock flicked on Isak's cross and Chelsea defender Disasi turned the ball into his own net.
Enzo Maresca's side struggled to cope with Newcastle's pressing and were fortunate to go into half-time with just a two-goal deficit.
Preston 0-3 Arsenal
Ethan Nwaneri starred in Arsenal's Carabao Cup win at Championship side Preston North End.
The 17-year-old midfielder curled in a superb first-half effort after Gabriel Jesus' first goal since January had set Arsenal on their way.
Substitute Kai Havertz rounded off the scoring after the break for the Gunners, who will face Crystal Palace at home in the quarter-finals in the week commencing 16 December.
Academy product Nwaneri, who registered his first senior goals in the 5-1 win over Bolton in the previous round of the competition, also hit the crossbar and was serenaded by the visiting fans after being substituted late on.
Brighton 2-3 Liverpool
Cody Gakpo scored twice to help send holders Liverpool into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup with a thrilling victory at Brighton.
After a goalless and largely forgettable first half, Dutch forward Gakpo broke the deadlock a minute after the break in stunning fashion, cutting inside before launching an unstoppable drive into the back of the net.
The goal sparked the game into life and goalkeeper Vítezslav Jaros, making his full debut for the Reds, made a brilliant one-handed save moments later to keep out Simon Adingra's header.
Evan Ferguson then fired over the bar but Liverpool had a golden chance to add a second when the visitors broke three on one, but Gakpo unselfishly decided to pass to Dominik Szoboszlai and his effort was blocked by the recovering Brighton defence.
However, Gakpo was not to be denied his second when a mistake by Tariq Lamptey allowed him to run unchallenged into the box and fire home.
Brighton pushed in the closing stages and got a goal back when a Liverpool defensive mistake was pounced upon and Adingra prodded in to halve the deficit.
That roused the home fans but Luis Diaz made sure of Liverpool's progress when he squeezed in an 81st-minute third, despite a late deflected finish by Lamptey.
Tottenham 2-1 Man City
Ange Postecoglou's quest to end Tottenham's trophy drought continued as victory over Manchester City booked a Carabao Cup quarter-final spot.
The Spurs boss claimed recently he always wins silverware in his second season - and remained on course to fulfil his promise after an entertaining, eventful encounter.
Timo Werner, who had a mixed evening, scored his first goal of the season with an emphatic finish after five minutes, before Pape Sarr doubled the home advantage 20 minutes later with a with superb low right-foot finish from 25 yards.
Spurs, though, suffered a setback when they lost key defender Micky van de Ven with a hamstring injury in the 14th minute, and City setting up a tense second half when Matheus Nunes pulled one back in the fourth minute of first-half added time.
City keeper Stefan Ortega kept his side in the contest with fine saves from Brennan Johnson, Dejan Kulusevki and Richarlison, while Werner fired wide when clean through before limping off with a groin muscle injury.
City, who suffered a casualty of their own when the lively Savinho was taken off on a stretcher, almost snatched a late leveller, but Yves Bissouma made a superb block on the line from Nico O'Reilly's effort.
Man Utd 5-2 Leicester

BBC Sport's chief football news reporter at Old Trafford
Ruud van Nistelrooy enjoyed a winning start as Manchester United’s interim manager as his side thrashed Leicester to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.
Two days after Van Nistelrooy was appointed as stand-in following the dismissal of Erik ten Hag, his pre-match demand for entertainment was met in full.
Casemiro started the fun with a sensational long-range strike and by half-time the Brazilian had another as he followed up an initial header that bounced off both posts by driving home from eight yards.
In between those efforts, Alejandro Garnacho fired home his fifth goal of the season and skipper Bruno Fernandes’ free-kick deflected in off Leicester full-back James Justin.
It wasn’t perfect from the hosts as old defensive frailties returned to allow Bilal El Khannouss and Conor Coady to score before half-time. The latter effort came after the ball had struck Diogo Dalot and bounced invitingly for the former England man to apply the first-time finish.
But in front of Sir Alex Ferguson, the hosts always had an element of control. Fernandes added a fifth on 59 minutes when he took maximum advantage of Caleb Okoli’s under-hit backpass.
