FC Red Bull Salzburg have won three of their five major European matches against Portuguese opponents (D1 L1), beating three different teams: Sporting CP in 1993 in the UEFA Cup, Vitória Guimarães in 2017 in the Europa League and Benfica earlier this season in the Champions League.
This is Benfica’s first major European away match in Austria since beating FC Wacker Innsbruck 4-0 in September 1971 in a European Cup game, with Eusébio scoring one of their four goals that day.
FC Red Bull Salzburg have lost their last three home UEFA Champions League games, their worst home losing run in the competition. Having lost two this season at the Red Bull Salzburg Arena, they are looking to avoid becoming only the third Austrian team to lose all three home group games in a single campaign, along with Sturm Graz in 1998-99 and Rapid Wien in 2005-06.
Benfica have won their final UEFA Champions League group stage match in each of their last four seasons in the competition (2018-19, 2019-20, 2021-22 and 2022-23), as many as they managed in their first 13 seasons (W4 D4 L5).
FC Red Bull Salzburg have failed to score in both of their home games in the UEFA Champions League this season (v Real Sociedad and Internazionale) – only once previously have they failed to score in three in a row at home in the competition, doing so in their first ever campaign in 1994-95.
Benfica are winless in their last seven UEFA Champions League games (D2 L5), and could equal their longest run without a win in the competition in this match – eight games between March 2017 and September 2018 (all defeats).
Since beating Benfica 2-0 on MD1 this season, FC Red Bull Salzburg are winless (D1 L3) and have only scored one goal across their last four UEFA Champions League games. The Austrian outfit have only netted three goals from 54 shots in the competition this term, with only Milan (3.6%) having a lower shot conversion rate than them (5.6%).
Benfica have conceded 10 goals in five games in the UEFA Champions League this season, while only in 2017-18 and 1998-99 have they previously failed to keep a clean sheet in a single edition. Only Young Boys (14.9) have a higher expected goals against total than the Portugues side (14.6) in the competition in 2023-24.
Oscar Gloukh is FC Red Bull Salzburg’s top scorer in the UEFA Champions League this season (2), while he’s also created the most chances for the Austrian side (6). Indeed, he’s one of only two teenagers to have scored more than once in the competition this term, along with Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel.
João Mário has scored nine goals for Benfica in the UEFA Champions League, including a hat-trick for them against Internazionale last time out – only Óscar Cardozo (11) has netted more goals for the club in the competition than the Portuguese midfielder (9).
