  4. Underdog status 'suits' Larne in Santa Clara tiepublished at 19:57 British Summer Time 7 August

Larne v Sants Clara (20:00 BST)

Larne goalkeeper Rohan Ferguson believes his team's primary objective is to keep their Uefa Conference League third-round tie alive against Portugal's Santa Clara after tonight's first leg at the Ballymena Showgrounds.

The Invermen negotiated the first two rounds of qualifying in penalty shootouts, but face a significant step up in class against a side that finished fifth in Portugal's top flight last season.

Larne reached the league phase last season and have ambitions of repeating that run, but have a huge test on their hands against the club from the Azores.

Nathan Rooney's side have played their home games in Ballymena due to their home pitch at Inver Park not meeting the required standards, but in their 'home' games against Auda and Prishtina, they kept clean sheets which Ferguson acknowledged is "a bit strange as it's not our home pitch".

Holding Santa Clara scoreless on Thursday would give them plenty to play for ahead of next week's return leg.

"It's another massive test," said Ferguson.

"We know they're a good side and have done the analysis on them. We want to get out to Portugal with something to play for.

"We want to enjoy Europe and hopefully get through to the next round, which will be hard. We've been underdogs the past two rounds but that suits us going into this one, [we're] not expected to win."

Larne v Sants Clara (20:00 BST)

Just the one change made by Nathan Rooney from last week's penalty shootout win in Kosovo. That sees Tiarnan O'Connor start for the first time in this European run in place of the suspended Paul O'Neill.

Vasco Matos also makes the one change from their comeback win over Croatian outfit Varazdin. That sees Miguel Pires come into midfield in place of Lucas Soares.

Larne: Ferguson, Donnelly, Gallagher, McKendry, Randall, O'Connor, Graham, Nolan, Cosgrove (C), Sloan, Bent.

Subs: Collett, Graham, Ridley, Magee, Kee, Moore, Lusty, Devlin, Wallace, Simpson.

Santa Clara: Batista (C), M. Pereira, Adriano, G. Silva, Rocha, Pires, Venancio, Lima, W. Silva, Serginho, Lopes.

Subs: Neneca, Afonso, Pacheco, Ferreira, Brenner, Costa, Nunes, Victor, H. Pereira.

Larne v Sants Clara (20:00 BST)

Larne have twice come through on penalties in their qualifiers with the spot-kick success against Prishtina following another shootout win against FK Auda.

Nathan Rooney's side now face Portugal's CD Santa Clara, with the first leg at the Ballymena Showgrounds before the return leg away next week.

The club from Ponta Delgada - the largest city in the Azores Islands - does have the distinction of being the most westerly team to compete in European competition and first from the Azores, but they have so much more about them than geography.

Following promotion from Portugal's second division in the 2023/24 season, Santa Clara enjoyed a solid campaign in the top flight last season with a fifth-place finish securing European football.

They enjoyed a 3-2 aggregate win against Croatia's NK Varazdin to move into this third-round tie, coming back from a 2-1 deficit after the first leg as Vinicius Lopes and Gabriel Silva scored the goals to see them home.

This is not the club's first experience of European football as they made it as far as the Conference League play-off round in 2021, only to be pipped to a place in the group stage by Serbia's Partizan.

The winners of this tie will face either Shamrock Rovers or Ballkani from Kosova for a place in the group phase.

    Vikingur 1-1 Linfield

After a minute of stoppage time, the first period comes to close.

It was on opening half which burst into life with two goals inside the opening 10 minutes.

If anything, David Healy might well be the slightly less happy of the two managers - he might well feel a bit disappointed that the Irish League champions aren't ahead, having created the lion's share of the chances in that first 45 minutes.

    Vikingur 1-1 Linfield

Another good chance for Linfield, owing to a piece of individual skill from Kieran Offord, who sets off on a strong run and ghosts past defender Arnbjorn Svensson before getting a fierce strike away from inside the penalty area.

The effort is on target at the near post but keeper Armgrimsson is well positioned to beat the ball away before it is eventually cleared.
