Thanks for joining us and see you next time.

    Bye for now.

  2. Butland the hero as Rangers win on penaltiespublished at 23:12 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March

Rangers 0-2 Fenerbahce (3-3 agg, 3-2 on penalties)

    BBC Sport Scotland

Jack Butland's penalty shootout heroics earned Rangers a place in the Europa League quarter-finals after Fenerbahce overturned a 3-1 first-leg deficit at Ibrox.

The home goalkeeper saved from Dusan Tadic and Fred before Mert Hakan Yandas skied his effort over the bar, sparking jubilant scenes both on the pitch and in the stands.

Barry Ferguson's side brought a two-goal lead back to Glasgow after a magnificent performance last week in Istanbul, but they were unable to replicate those levels as their recent struggles in front of their own fans continued.

Goals from Poland midfielder Sebastian Szymanski either side of half-time brought the visitors level on aggregate and Jose Mourinho's side pushed for a winner in normal time.

Tadic curled a shot just wide and Youssef En-Nesyri was denied only by a last-ditch James Tavernier tackle in the dying embers of normal time.

Vaclav Cerny was Rangers' main threat throughout, taking defenders on at will and forcing several saves from visiting goalkeeper Irfan Can Egribayat.

However, neither side could find a decisive goal before the 90 minutes were up and, although Cerny and Tavernier went close for Rangers in extra time, spot kicks were needed to decide the tie.

Tavernier, Cerny and Tom Lawrence converted for the hosts in the shootout, setting up a meeting with Athletic Bilbao in the last eight after the Spanish outfit overcame Roma.

It is the first time Rangers have lost four successive home matches in their history, but the overriding emotion was that of joy and relief at Ibrox after Ferguson's players held their nerve.

  3. Fernandes hat-trick sends Man Utd throughpublished at 23:11 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March

Man Utd 4-1 Real Sociedad (5-2 agg)

BBC Sport's chief football news reporter at Old Trafford

Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick to lead his side to victory against 10-man Real Sociedad at Old Trafford and book a Europa League quarter-final encounter with French club Lyon.

Needing a victory to keep alive their hopes of marking Ruben Amorim's first year in charge with silverware and knowing the tournament is their only realistic chance of securing European football next season, United got off to the worst possible start as Mikel Oyarzabal scored from the spot after being brought down by Matthijs de Ligt.

Thankfully for the hosts, the were level within six minutes as Fernandes kept his cool after Igor Zubeldia had taken Rasmus Hojlund down as the Dane was bearing down on the Sociedad goal.

Remarkably, it took a third penalty of the night to get United's noses in front.

Aritz Elustondo complained long after it was ruled he had fouled Patrick Dorgu. It made no difference, and for the third time, the goalkeeper went the wrong way as Fernandes found the net for from the spot for his 14th goal of the season.

The Spanish visitors' last chance seemed to disappear midway through the second half when Jon Aramburu was sent off for hauling down Dorgu, who would have been through.

But just for good measure, United struck twice more before the end.

Fernandes completed his second hat-trick for the club with a low finish across goal and into the far corner before fellow Portugal international Diogo Dalot drilled home a fourth in stoppage time.

  4. Odobert double helps Spurs turn tie around to advancepublished at 23:09 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March

Tottenham 3-1 AZ Alkmaar (3-2 agg)

    Emlyn Begley
    BBC Sport

Wilson Odobert scored twice to save Tottenham Hotspur's season as they overcame a first-leg deficit to beat AZ Alkmaar and reach the Europa League quarter-finals.

Sitting 13th in the Premier League and out of both domestic cups, this competition is Spurs' only remaining chance of success.

They were poor in the first leg last week in the Netherlands, losing 1-0, but much improved at home on Thursday.

Odobert opened the scoring with his first goal for the club when Dominic Solanke picked him out in space to fire into the top corner.

Tottenham took the lead in the tie early in the second half when James Maddison played a one-two with Son Heung-min in the box before curling home.

Spurs gifted AZ an aggregate equaliser, with a mix-up between Odobert and Lucas Bergvall allowing Peer Koopmeiners to drill home.

But Odobert made amends and won the tie - finishing off a fantastic team move that started in the hosts' own half by tapping in from close range.

AZ had a big chance to level again with Troy Parrott's effort saved by Guglielmo Vicario and Mees de Wit's rebound cleared off the line by Yves Bissouma.

Spurs will play Eintracht Frankfurt, who beat Ajax 6-2 on aggregate, in the last eight.

  5. Chelsea move on in Conference Leaguepublished at 23:08 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March

    Chelsea 1-0 Copenhagen (3-1 agg)

    Sam Drury
    BBC Sport

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall scored the only goal of the game as Chelsea sealed their place in the Conference League quarter-finals with a forgettable second-leg win over Copenhagen.

The midfielder showed quick feet on the edge of the box before bundling through a pair of challenges and finishing clinically across the goalkeeper into the bottom corner 10 minutes into the second half.

Chelsea, who held a 2-1 aggregate lead from the first leg, were second best in the first half and there were some boos at the end of an opening 45 minutes in which the home side did not have a shot.

Copenhagen were full of energy and attacking intent, showing no sign of nerves at Stamford Bridge, but lacked the quality and decision making in the final third to hurt the hosts.

Cole Palmer, who started on the bench having missed training sessions earlier in the week through illness, was sent on for the second half and played his part in a much-improved display from Enzo Maresca's side.

After Dewsbury-Hall put them in front, Palmer came close to ending a goal drought that now stretches to 10 games as he drove forward and sent his shot narrowly wide. While Copenhagen attempted to force their way back into the tie, Chelsea were comfortable.

The visitors had to wait until stoppage time to create a real chance of note when Rodrigo Huescas broke into the box but fired his shot over the bar.

Chelsea progress, though, and will face Legia Warsaw from Poland in the last eight.

  8. 'We need to help Fernandes win titles' - Amorimpublished at 23:01 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March

FT: Man Utd 4-1 Real Sociedad (5-2 agg)

    Manchester United

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim, speaking TNT Sports about Bruno Fernandes: "It is hard for a player like Bruno. Sometimes he wants to win too much - that's not a bad thing. He doesn't trust in the teammates and he can show that frustration, but he is always there.

"He can do set-pieces, he can score penalties with high pressure, he can make transitions. It is perfect for us and we need to help him win titles as he deserves it.

"Sometimes I need this team to take the ball to the last third so I try to use Bruno.

"Bruno near the box is so dangerous. I think Casemiro gave us some calm."

On the importance of Europa league: "We have a lot of games in the Premier League. In my head we are going to use every minute to improve the team.

"Against Lyon it will be a different game the physicality is there.

"They play in a league which is so physical. It doesn't have the same quality, but it is going to be a different game."

Manchester United defender Patrick Dorgu took the unusual step of telling the officials not to give the home side a third penalty in the second half of tonight's victory against Real Sociedad.

It did seem United were about to benefit from a third spot-kick but the decision was overruled.

Head coach Ruben Amorim was full of praise for Dorgu, this evening at least.

"It is the right thing to do so I am quite proud of him," he said.

"But I cannot say if it is 0-0 or losing I have the same response."

  12. 'It was a tough week, but a good week'published at 22:43 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March

FT: Man Utd 4-1 Real Sociedad (5-2 agg)

    Manchester United

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim, speaking TNT Sports: "It was a complete week. We showed a bit of the future. Today, we had a good performance from our team - the physicality was there.

"In this competition it is completely different - we can be the dominant side in physicality. It was a tough week, but a good week.

"I am also learning how to use players like Casemiro. Without a lot of options we are trying to put our players in the best positions. You can feel they have more freedom because of the one game in Spain [first leg against Real Sociedad] we tried to use the pace of Garnacho on the right.

"He has shown me so many things on the right, maybe better than the left."

On Rasmus Hojlund: "We play with two 10s. We need one player to push the team and make the runs. He his helping a lot. Today, he did three or four connections that can allow us to change the game.

"He just needs to score a goal, he is so anxious."

  13. 'Hopefully I can kick on'published at 22:40 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March

FT: Tottenham 3-1 AZ Alkmaar (3-2 agg)

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven speaking to TNT Sports: "I'm really happy, a great team performance and we're through to the next round and that's the main thing.

"We've not had an easy season this season, so it's really good to win this round. The atmosphere in the dressing room was really good.

"We play against a difficult opponent, Frankfurt, it's going to be really difficult but we know our quality, at home we're a really strong team.

"I haven't played for a long time, on the weekend I played 30. today I played 60, so hopefully I can kick on from this. It was really nice to be next to Cuti [Romero] again, he's a top player of course.

"We showed from the first minute that we wanted to win the game in the 90 minutes."

  14. Rangers and Fenerbahce heading to penaltiespublished at 22:37 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March

    Rangers 0-2 Fenerbahce (3-3 agg after extra-time)

Both Rangers and Fenerbahce have had chances to win it in a frantic second period of extra-time.

Fenerbahce were certain they had won a penalty, but it was not given, much to the annoyance of boss Jose Mourinho, who got a yellow card for taking the complaints too far.

Penalties it is at Ibrox and you can follow them here.

  15. 'Fernandes is carrying this team'published at 22:37 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March

FT: Man Utd 4-1 Real Sociedad (5-2 agg)

    Paul Scholes
Former Manchester United midfielder on TNT Sports

Over this last six-to-seven weeks he's [Bruno Fernandes] been brilliant. He's playing a bit deeper these days rather than that 10 role. He's carrying this team to a little bit of success.

  16. 'We thoroughly deserved to win'published at 22:30 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March

FT: Tottenham 3-1 AZ Alkmaar (3-2 agg)

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou speaking to TNT Sports: "We've progressed which is the main thing, played pretty well as well. I thought we were really in control of the game, we're our own worst enemy at times. When we were in control, we let them back in the game and it was nervy at end but we thoroughly deserved to win.

"We scored a great goal from the press and started the second half really well, really should've put the tie away in the first 15/20 minutes but super pleased for the boys."

On players returning to fitness: "It's why they're here, they're quality players. [Cristian] Romero and Micky [Van de Ven] make such a big difference to us and you saw Wilson [Odobert], we've hardly had him this year, what a super talent he is."

  17. 'Fernandes was brilliant, once again'published at 22:27 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March

FT: Man Utd 4-1 Real Sociedad (5-2 agg)

    Rene Meulensteen
Former Manchester United coach on BBC Radio 5 Live

Bruno Fernandes was brilliant, once again.

He takes the responsibility stepping up for the two penalties.

Overall, apart from the first 10 minutes - it was all United, the kind of United you want to see. There was thrust, they created a lot of chances.

The only thing which was missing was Ramus Hojlund scoring a goal. I do think the players realised how important this game was for Man Utd and for themselves.

Do not underestimate how important it is if United get to the final. It would give Ruben Amorim a lot of credibility.

  18. 'Confidence is a big thing in football'published at 22:26 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March

FT: Man Utd 4-1 Real Sociedad (5-2 agg)

    Manchester United

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, speaking to TNT Sports: "This club is all about winning.

"We need to win games. We have a long way to go, but we are confident if we focus on every game ahead and have the right mentality we can win games."

On reacting to Real Sociedad's opening goal: "Obviously, it was good for us. We react quick.

"A penalty is a bit unlucky, but then we get our penalty with a great ball from Casemiro."

On confidence: "With the result and performance when you start to get a bit more confident, confidence is a big thing in football.

"We are doing very good progress, but the progress will be seen if we get results. At this club it is all about results."

On Rasmus Hojlund: "He is a striker, strikers are all about goals. For us, in the dressing room, we want Rasmus to score as many as he can.

"When the first one comes he will start to score more and more."

  19. 'We need to do our best to achieve our target this season'published at 22:25 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March

FT: Chelsea 1-0 Copenhagen (3-1 agg)

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca speaking to TNT Sports: "It's important to reach the quarter-finals. Now the target is the next step which is the semi-finals. We deserved it over two legs. We changed and adjusted in the second half and we were much better. You need patience.

On success and the fans' expectations to win: "Exactly. This club always won trophies in the past and we need to do our best to achieve our target this season. We have to give to the fans and the club a title."

  20. 'We haven't achieved anything yet'published at 22:23 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March

FT: Tottenham 3-1 AZ Alkmaar (3-2 agg)

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham midfielder James Maddison speaking to TNT Sports: "The next stage is what we set out to do at the start of the two legs. There was a lot of talk after last week's performance, we were honest with ourselves it wasn't good enough.

"I know what we're capable of here and we got the job done. We haven't achieved anything yet, we're in the quarter-final and we kick on and we look forward to it.

"Over the last few months when we've spoken about injuries and missing key players, then tonight, we're stood in the tunnel and you look at the team and it's a group of men. When you have the spine of players who are experienced and have played at this level for a long time it makes a difference.

"Micky [Van de Ven] and Cuti [Romero], solid at the back and it was a solid performance and we're deservedly through.

"Wilson Odobert will grab the headlines tonight and rightly so, two goals and he was a threat, and I thought he was absolutely fantastic. I'm going to go give him a big pat on the back."
