Barcelona have won six of their nine meetings with Shakhtar Donetsk in all competitions (D1 L2), including the last three in a row. They last met in the 2010-11 UEFA Champions League quarter-final, with Barcelona winning 6-1 on aggregate en route to lifting the trophy.
Shakhtar Donetsk have lost three of their four away games against Barcelona in all competitions, with the exception being a 3-2 victory in the 2008-09 UEFA Champions League group stages.
Barcelona have won each of their last three games in the UEFA Champions League, after only winning one of their first seven under Xavi (D2 L4). They’re yet to concede in the competition this term, and could begin a European Cup/Champions League campaign with three wins and three clean sheets for the first time.
Shakhtar Donetsk won 3-2 against Royal Antwerp last time out in the UEFA Champions League, ending a six-game run without a win (D3 L3). They last won consecutive games in the competition in February 2018 under Paulo Fonseca, with wins over Manchester City (2-1) and Roma (2-1).
Barcelona have only lost three of their last 41 home games in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League (W32 D6), although those three defeats have arrived within the eight most recent games, losing at least one in each of the previous three campaigns (2020-21 v Juventus, 2021-22 and 2022-23 v Bayern).
Barcelona have had 18 build-up attacks in the UEFA Champions League this season (10+ OP pass sequences that end with a shot or touch in the opposition box), with only Manchester City (19) having more in the opening two matchdays of the current tournament.
Ilkay Gündogan has assisted a goal in both of his UEFA Champions League appearances for Barcelona this season (2), including the winner against FC Porto last time out. The last player to assist in three consecutive appearances for the club in the competition was Andrés Iniesta in December 2014 (3).
Danylo Sikan has scored half of Shakhtar Donetsk’s goals in the UEFA Champions League this term (2/4). With his brace against Royal Antwerp last time out, he became the second youngest Shakhtar player to score twice in a game in the competition (22y 171d), after Oleksandr Gladkyi v Barcelona in 2008 (21y 107d).
Lamine Yamal made his first UEFA Champions League start for Barcelona on MD2 (v FC Porto), becoming the youngest player ever to start a game in the competition (16y 83d). Indeed, should he find the net in this game, he’d become the youngest ever scorer in the UEFA Champions League (16y 104d).
Ilkay Gündogan has made more line-breaking passes in the final third (14) than any other Barcelona player in the UEFA Champions League this season, as well as leading the team for passes that have broken the opposition’s defensive line (4).
