As the coffee shops begin to open in sleepy Basel, England fans are beginning to emerge.

Jenny has been following the Lionesses since their Euro2022 win: “This tournament will be a reminder of the growth of women’s football - we want to keep those WSL attendances up.”

And despite the last-minute wins which have been a nerve wracking experience for fans, she’s on board with Sarina Wiegman’s substitution timings.

“Anything she’s been doing has been working - it’s unsettled the opposing teams!”

Spain have won the World Cup and the Nations League but are yet to box off the Euros.

Well, this is their chance to complete the set in their first ever European Championship final.

I think for the players it’s not pressure at all, it’s an opportunity. I think it’s 50/50 because England are European Champions and spain are World Cup champions. It’s the two best teams in the world right now and Spain really want to enjoy this final.

This is the first final that Spain can enjoy and they’ll look at it as an opportunity to keep writing history.

England fans flying into Basel had a special descent today. As the plane came into Switzerland it sounded like one of the flight attendants held her mobile phone up to the tannoy… and started playing ‘Sweet Caroline’.

Incredible vibes. It was amazing. It felt like everyone on the plane was there for the England match. At the end of the song everyone shouted come on England! It was a great start to what will be an incredible day for sure.

Just under six hours to go until kick-off and the England fans are already out and about in Basel.

How times have changed and for the better!

I started playing as a six-year-old and was the only girl playing in an all-boys league.

Thankfully, young girls these days have the support needed.

Many of the England fans I have been speaking to in Basel this weekend have been telling me about the barriers they themselves or their loved ones have faced when it comes to playing women’s football.

Louisa, who is from Crew and is a big Alex Greenwood fan, tells me she was fobbed off by a teacher when she was at school and wanted to play football because she didn’t like netball.

"He said no and kept making up excuses, like ‘we don’t have enough staff'," she tells me.

"I wouldn’t give up, so eventually the teacher just said to me ‘football’s not for girls’, so I just accepted that and assumed that women and girls couldn’t play football."

Tehya,17, who is from Kent, says there was no girl’s football team at her school and so the only way she could play was kicking a ball around with her brother.

And then there’s Alex, who is from London and says his aunt was laughed at for wanting to play the sport when she was young.

"A lot of people forget that women’s football was banned in England for 50 years," he tells me.

The English front pages are full of support for the Lionesses today.

Jen has followed the Lionesses for as long as she can remember. She bagged tickets for the semi-final ahead of the tournament, but admits she didn’t think it would be the Lionesses she’d be watching here in Switzerland:

“I was on the sofa at home with England v Sweden on in extra time - whilst googling how best to get a Sweden shirt!”

Thankfully, Jen didn’t have to wear a yellow and blue number and believes that’s down to the England manager:

“In Sarina we trust!”

“It’s been a stressful journey to the final as a fan, but I think she’s been doing the right things. She’s got us here - we’re in the final, so you have to trust her.”

Nothing that a bit of team work can't fix, right guys?!
