Qarabag upset Benfica to make Champions League history

Qarabag produced a stunning comeback at Benfica to create history and become the first Azerbaijani side to win a Champions League main draw match.

Having qualified for Europe's premier competition for the first time in eight years, Gurban Gurbanov's side found themselves facing a 2-0 deficit after just 16 minutes following goals from Enzo Barrenechea and Vangelis Pavlidis.

The Azerbaijan champions halved the deficit on the half-hour mark through a fine Leandro Andrade finish before team-mate Kady Borges struck the foot of the post.

Three minutes after the break, Gurbanov's side silenced the Estadio da Luz with the leveller. Marko Jankovic's defence-splitting pass found Camilo Duran and he expertly found the far post on his Champions League debut.

Substitute Oleksii Kashchuk got the historic winning goal five minutes from time, picking the ball up with his back to goal before finishing brilliantly on the turn.

Qarabag players and staff dropped to their knees in celebration at the final whistle after a victory that will go down in Champions League history, with their previous campaign ending with two draws and four losses.

Up next for Gurbanov and his team is a home tie with Copenhagen, while Benfica travel to Chelsea.
