Hibernian claimed a thumping win over Dundee to equal a club record unbeaten league streak of 17 matches - set in 1948 - with head coach David Gray describing it as "an incredible achievement".

The victory consolidates third place, moving Hibs three points clear of Dundee United and Aberdeen, who squandered a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Rangers earlier on Sunday.

Striker Kieron Bowie came off the bench to score twice after Rocky Bushiri got the ball rolling in the first half, with veteran Dwight Gayle also on the scoresheet.

Second-bottom Dundee remain a point behind Ross County and Kilmarnock but five clear of St Johnstone.

But the day belonged to Hibs after what Gray described as "a great performance, fantastic result" that gives them "a great opportunity" to finish third.

"The level of consistency, the level of performance and the effort I'm getting from the players every single day in training and in games now is incredible and that's a reflection on 17 games undefeated, which is an incredible achievement," he said.

"Little incentives to try and change history in positive ways - it's probably a quote I've used a lot this season, but we've managed to do that several times and today was another opportunity to do that."

The home side, no doubt spurred on by Aberdeen's slip-up at Pittodrie, started the game on the front foot, with Mykola Kuharevich firing over in the first minute after being set up by Junior Hoilett.

Dundee arrived at Easter Road looking to secure back-to-back wins and slowly worked their way into the game.

A well-worked free-kick by Finlay Robertson gave top scorer Simon Murray an opportunity, but the in-form striker was denied by a fine save from Jordan Smith in the home goal.

With play swinging from end to end, Kuharevich's shot came back off the base of the post.

The breakthrough did come after 25 minutes, Martin Boyle's corner to the near post finding Bushiri who was on hand to hook the ball into the top corner.

Into the second half, traffic continued towards the Dundee goal and number two arrived when substitute Bowie finished off a stunning move involving Jordan Obita and Lewis Miller.

The victory was sealed with just over 10 minutes left when veteran striker Gayle, also off the bench, showed magnificent composure when curling a low right-foot shot just inside the post.

The Hibs fans wanted more and were duly rewarded as Nicky Cadden's wonderful cross was headed home by Bowie.

Gray turnaround earns more plaudits

On their current form, Hibs are looking the real deal when it comes to being favourites for third spot.

There is an energy around Easter Road that has been missing for some considerable time.

These are by and large the same players who struggled at the start of the season. They deserve a huge amount of praise for turning what could have been a calamitous campaign into one that is likely to end with European adventures to look forward to.

However, most of all, head coach Gray is proving to the doubters, and there were a few during those dark days, he can develop a group of players into a competitive team and they will go into the final five games with massive confidence.

Problems at both ends for Dundee boss

Tony Docherty had been full of praise for his defence prior to this game, but there is no doubt the Dundee manager will be asking questions about this performance.

The opening goal for Bushiri was just too easy and that put the visitors on the back foot.

There was little creativity or opportunities for Murray up front either and that will also be something that has to be addressed in the coming weeks.

Hibs were very good and that fact cannot be lost, but if Dundee are to escape relegation they will have to play much better than they did at Easter Road.

What they said

Hibernian head coach David Gray: "I think we've demonstrated now, when we play at the top of our level, we're a really good side.

"All we've done at this moment in time is given ourselves a brilliant opportunity. We are not getting carried away. We need to stay humble. A lot of hard work's still to be done, but the challenge for us is, if we keep winning, nobody can catch us."

Dundee manager Tony Docherty: "Today was a surprise for me, I must admit. That's something that we need to get to the bottom of as a group.

"There's a lot of frustration and disappointment. The team that have been as good as we've been in our last four league fixtures, beating St Mirren, beating Dundee United, should have got a positive result against Rangers and a draw against St Johnstone - that team never turned up in the first half.

"Now whether that was down to Hibs' reputation or whatever, but certainly we addressed that at half-time."
