    Real Madrid

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti on preferring refereeing in the Champions League to La Liga: "Statistics speak for themselves, in Europe there's less controversy in this sense, there are less VAR interventions.

"The VAR only intervenes when it's necessary, and usually the Champions League features the best referees from each country, so the quality is very high in this sense."

  2. 'We have a small advantage'published at 13:08 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February

Real Madrid v Man City (Wed, 20:00 GMT)

    Real Madrid

Real Madrid manager was asked about quotes attributed to Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, who reportedly said that City had just a one per cent chance of winning their knockout play-off tie:

"I'll ask him before the game tomorrow. Do you really think he thinks he just has a one per cent [chance]. Of course he thinks he has more possibilities and we don't think we have a 99% chance.

"We think we have a small advantage, one which we have to take advantage of. We will try to play the same game we played in the first leg - things worked out very well then."

Mr WJ Gow, the referee who refused to give a penalty for Bobby Moore's foul on Paul Hendrie in the Birmingham v Fulham FA Cup semi-final replay in 1975. The wait for an apology might go on however as I think he’s no longer with us.

Last night, Everton fans got to experience their new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock for the first time as it opened its doors to 10,000 Toffees supporters who were successful in a ballot for an under-18s friendly against Wigan.

Here's what those lucky supporters had to say...

For me I'd like an apology from Damir Skomina for awarding Liverpool that penalty 20 seconds into the Champions League final against Tottenham. Technically he may have been correct to do so, but what a way to suck all the excitement and tension out of the game in minute one.

    Alex, Newcastle

    On the other hand...

Still waiting for an apology from Phil Dowd for not sending Nemanja Vidic off in the 2010 League Cup final because it was 'too early'. Didn't realise the laws changed depending on time.

Matheus Franca continued his journey to full fitness as he played about an hour of Crystal Palace Under-21s' 3-0 win over Aston Villa.

Things in south London have not been ideal for Franca, who has made just 13 appearances since signing from Flamengo in the summer of 2023 - a deal that was worth in the region of £20m.

He made his first senior appearance of this season as a stoppage-time substitute in the 2-0 win over Doncaster in the fourth round of the FA Cup earlier this month.

Manager Oliver Glasner said Franca needed minutes and he was named in the starting line-up on Monday as the young Eagles side ran out comfortable winners.

Waiting since 1977 for Joe Jordan’s apology for his hand ball v Wales in World Cup qualifying at Anfield, ref gave the penalty to Scotland! I had a chat to him a few years ago in Clifton, lovely guy, I didn’t mention the incident though.

  10. 'The accountability belongs to all of us'published at 12:41 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February

Real Madrid v Manchester City (Wed,20:00 GMT)

Pep Guardiola also added: "We are just not stable enough. I've been here for many years and we've been an extraordinary team, a machine every three days.

"This year, I accept when the opponent is better but at the moment I'm not good enough to give composure to the team to manage these situations. It's the truth.

"The accountability belongs to all of us, not just the players. For me, it would be easy to blame a specific player but that is ridiculous and doesn't work. It is me first and the players as well.

"The truth is that we are not stable enough in those moments. Today is not an exception, it happened many times. Today is what it is, tomorrow you have to continue and have fresh legs and fresh minds."

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola admits to his team making "bad decisions" after losing 3-2 in the first leg of the play-offs to reach the last 16 of the Champions League.

This means that last year's Premier League Champions will be going into the second leg away at The Bernabeu, a goal behind thanks to Jude Bellingham injury-time winner.

"Many times it happens this season. I know the quality of Real Madrid. We took the game in the second half and tried to attack too quickly. It happens because they are an exceptional team", Guardiola said speaking the night of the first game.

"It happens many times this season. Bad decisions, that's all. I take it. It's not about you and me, or just the team, it's everyone."

Head coach Carlo Ancelotti and stars such as Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Jr were all smiles as they prepared for the second leg of their Champions League knockout play-off at home to Manchester City.

  16. Guardiola on Haaland injury scarepublished at 12:12 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February

Real Madrid v Man City (Wed, 20:00 GMT)

    Manchester City

Pep Guardiola was upbeat about Erling Haaland on Saturday after his injury scare against Newcastle, saying that the club doctors did not come to him with bad news.

And all certainly looked well with the Norway striker in training at the Etihad today.

"When he was down everyone was scared," said Guardiola after the win over Newcastle.

"He got up, walked smiling like always. I didn't speak to him but the doctors didn't come for bad news. Hopefully [will be fine for Madrid]."

  17. Haaland plays his part in trainingpublished at 12:08 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February

Real Madrid v Man City (Wed, 20:00 GMT)

    Manchester City

There were Manchester City fears about Erling Haaland as he looked to have jarred his knee in Saturday's 4-0 win at home to Newcastle.

Haaland went down off the ball and looked in a lot of pain - but he was able to walk off the pitch under his own steam.

So it will come as a relief to manager Pep Guardiola that his striker was able to take to the training pitch today and looked in good shape.

City will need their top marksman firing on all cylinders in the Bernabeu on Wednesday night.

I'm still waiting for an apology from referee Remi Harrel for sending off Garry Parker for taking a free quick too quickly at Filbert Street against Atletico in the UEFA Cup in 1997.

    Steve, Cambridge

Not bitter, but David Elleray still hasn’t apologised for not giving a penalty on Andrew Johnson when he was fouled by Stephane Henchoz in the 2001 League Cup Final. Like I said, not bitter about something that happened 24 years ago.

    Chris, Derby

I'm still waiting for an apology from the referee that sent Van Persie off vs Barcelona in 2011 for 'kicking the ball away'. Unbelievable stuff back then.

This Get Involved seems to have drawn out your long-held grievances over refereeing decisions decades ago. Delightfully petty, please keep them coming.

  19. Grealish holding nothing backpublished at 11:55 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February

Real Madrid v Man City (Wed, 20:00 GMT)

    Manchester City

Jack Grealish does not seem to be holding anything back as he closes down Jeremy Doku. The England midfielder was given a shock recall to the starting XI for the first leg against Real Madrid but pulled up in the first half and had to be substituted.

And on that note, the feed goes black - the 15 minutes of open training is up, the cameras now have to be switched off as training continues in private.

The training session has moved on from the warm-up into a series of "rondos" - piggy-in-the-middle with a football for the uninitiated.

Jack Grealish is in a group with Kevin de Bruyne and Jeremy Doku, as well as defenders Nathan Ake and John Stones.
