Match Facts
This will be Real Madrid’s first European meeting with FC Salzburg, and their first with an Austrian side since their 5-1 victory over Sturm Graz in the UEFA Champions League group stage back in 1998-99.
Real Madrid lost their last game when facing an opponent for the first time in the European Cup/UEFA Champions League (0-1 v Lille this season), but haven’t lost consecutive such matches since between 2005 and 2006, when they were beaten by Lyon (0-3) and Arsenal (0-1).
Real Madrid have scored in each of their last 32 home UEFA Champions League matches, the longest ongoing run of any side. They did lose 3-1 to Milan in their last home game however, last suffering consecutive home defeats in the same season in the 2018-19 campaign against CSKA Moscow and Ajax.
FC Salzburg have lost five UEFA Champions League matches by two or more goals without scoring this season. In the competition’s history the only team to lose more such games in one season is fellow Austrian side Sturm Graz in 2000-01 (6).
Real Madrid have conceded 11 goals in the UEFA Champions League this season, failing to keep a clean sheet. In only one group stage have they ever shipped more goals, conceding 12 in the 1999-00 second group stage.
FC Salzburg have used 24 different players in the UEFA Champions League this season, with no side using more across the opening six matchdays. In the same period, only Young Boys (24) made more changes to their starting XI than the Austrian side (23).
In the UEFA Champions League, FC Salzburg have faced the reigning champions six times and lost all six matches by an aggregate score of 19-6. They’re one of two sides to face the holders in 6+ games and lose every time, along with Viktoria Plzen (lost 6/6).
This will be new FC Salzburg manager Thomas Letsch’s first ever match in the UEFA Champions League. In the history of the competition, 13 managers have taken charge of their first match against Real Madrid and 12 have lost, with Klaus Augenthaler the only manager to win in his maiden game against them, doing so with Bayer Leverkusen in September 2004.
Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé has scored 50 goals and provided 24 assists in 79 UEFA Champions League appearances, with his next goal or assist making him only the eighth player to register 75+ goal involvements, as well as taking him level with Thierry Henry’s total (50 goals, 25 assists).
Since the start of the 2021-22 season, Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior has been involved in the most goals (22 goals, 16 assists), created the most chances (81), carried the ball the furthest distance (9,973m) and made the most dribbles (299) of any player in the UEFA Champions League.
