Milutin Osmajic struck twice as Preston knocked out Charlton to set up an FA Cup fourth round tie at home to Wycombe Wanderers.
The Montenegro international capitalised on a defensive error to put the Championship side ahead in a game which was rearranged after Saturday's postponement due to a frozen pitch.
Luke Berry fired in an equaliser for Nathan Jones' team, who went into the tie full of confidence after a run of six unbeaten games in League One.
Osmajic netted his ninth goal of the season shortly into the second half but the home side were thankful for a brilliant late save by Freddie Woodman from Chuks Aneke's header.
The Addicks went into the tie hopeful of an upset after their recent league form as they sought to get past the third round for the first time since their run to the quarter-finals in 2013-14.
Preston, who have already had a run in the EFL Cup, knocking out Fulham along the way, began sluggishly but centre-back Lewis Gibson, making his debut for the club after his move from Plymouth, almost had a dream start with a header that flashed just wide.
It was Charlton making most of the running in the first half, however, as Tyreece Campbell and Thierry Small caused problem down the Preston flanks.
They were undone, however, as Alex Mitchell, under pressure from Will Keane, played a slack ball back towards goalkeeper Will Mannion and Lilywhites leading scorer Osmajic darted in, nicked the ball away from the keeper and placed it into the empty net.
The lead lasted eight minutes as Small, a regular danger down the right, crossed for Luke Berry to tuck the ball away from 12 yards.
Charlton finished the half strongly, Josh Edwards driving for goal and forcing Woodman to tip his drive over.
The game turned again three minutes after the break as Ben Whiteman's corner found its way to Osmajic and he volleyed the ball past Mannion.
Edwards headed over as the Addicks sought to strike back again but Osmajic twice went close to his hat-trick goal on the counter-attack.
The Londoners again staged a big finish, with Woodman snatching the ball off the toe of Lloyd Jones from a Miles Leaburn knock-down and then Aneke, just minutes after going on as a substitute, was left with his head in his hands as the keeper clawed away his attempt that was arrowing into the corner.
