  2. Football far from being free of discrimination - Townsendpublished at 15:15 British Summer Time 19 July

    Nick Mashiter
    BBC Sport football news reporter

Football has a long way to go before it can say it is making progress against racism and discrimination, fears Troy Townsend, former head of player engagement at anti-discrimination group Kick It Out.

Along with this week's controversy over Argentina's social media video, on Monday Wolves striker Hwang Hee-Chan alleged he was abused by a Como player in a friendly.

Sheffield Wednesday were also fined after a fan made a racist gesture towards Coventry City midfielder Kasey Palmer in January.

Townsend told BBC Sport: "Every environment has a responsibility to ensure their environment is ‘free from’. Every time I see a statement I hear 'we’re a place free from discrimination' but we’re so far away from that it’s unbelievable.

"Maybe the messages going out need to change, maybe there needs to be a focus on the punishment element and then we can talk about the education element.

"At the moment we’re saying a game which is ‘free from’ and the game is not ‘free from’. Until we can acknowledge that internally ourselves we’re never going to convince the outside world."

  4. Players need educating about the impact of language - Townsendpublished at 15:10 British Summer Time 19 July

    Nick Mashiter
    BBC Sport football news reporter

Troy Townsend - the former head of player engagement at anti-discrimination group Kick It Out - wants mandatory classes to help educate players in England about the impact of their language and actions.

Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez is facing sanctions from the Premier League club after posting a video on social media the French Football Federation said included alleged "racist and discriminatory language".

World governing body Fifa is also investigating the video, in which several members of the Argentina squad - celebrating their 1-0 win over Colombia in the Copa America final - take part in a song originally sung by Argentina fans questioning the heritage of France's black and mixed-race players.

Fernandez has since issued an apology on social media.

Townsend said: "It shows we have a bigger and growing problem here. Enzo’s apology says he understands the language which was used and he was remorseful.

"We talk about education but we always educate after the event.

"I deliver education into the academy environment to make young players aware of their responsibilities and we are one of the leading countries which provides education.

"I’m not sure you would see that mirrored across the globe. Enzo Fernandez plies his trade in England and it should be mandatory that players receive the level of education to understand the impact of words and language used. That would be a big step forward."

I agree with Steve from Galway (12:25 BST). For too long Everton have festered with this devil-may-care attitude. What will it take for them to realise that enough is enough?

    Crystal Palace 1-1 Charlton

Crystal Palace have already been in pre-season action today, with new signing Daichi Kamada laying on an equaliser in a 1-1 draw with League One side Charlton.

Japan midfielder Kamada, 27, who joined from Lazio on a free transfer at the start of July, played the full 90 minutes.

He teed up former Charlton loanee Jesurun Rak-Sakyi to score late in the game after Chuks Aneke had put the Addicks in front in the first half.

Triallist Ryan Sessegnon, who was released by Tottenham at the end of last season, played the second half after replacing Tyrell Mitchell on the left of the Eagles' defence.

Everton's women's side have completed the signing of Nigeria international forward Toni Payne.

The 29-year-old, who can play across the front line, joins the club after a six-year spell in Spain with Sevilla and is the first signing of the summer for Brian Sorensen’s side.

Payne, who has 21 caps for Nigeria, was part of the Super Eagles squad that competed at the 2023 World Cup finals in Australia and New Zealand, being narrowly beaten by England in the last 16.

Born in Alabama, Payne represented the United States at youth international level before switching her allegiance to Nigeria.

She featured in all 30 of Sevilla’s Spanish top-flight league fixtures last term, scoring six goals.

“I’m super excited to be an Everton player,” said Payne

“It’s been my dream to play in the UK and in such a strong league like the WSL.

“Now was the right moment for me to look for another challenge to push myself."

  17. 'You have to aim high' - Erikssonpublished at 14:31 British Summer Time 19 July

    England

Former England manager Sven Goran Eriksson has been speaking about who should replace Gareth Southgate as the Three Lions' new head coach.

Eriksson said that because of expectations England have now set themselves, they should aim high, adding that Premier League winners Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp should top the list of targets for the FA.

"Gareth’s results and achievements have set the bar very high. The expectations are now through the roof," Eriksson told the Telegraph.

"After he stepped down, I saw lots of comments about whether the next manager should be English. For me, it should not matter.

"The most important thing is to find the right man who can not only take the team to a final, but also go the full distance and win it.

"If he is English, or foreign, I don’t think it should mean much. You just have to find a top manager, or a young one with a good future.

"If you want to aim high, the obvious two contenders are Jurgen Klopp or Pep Guardiola. They know English football, the players and culture. If there was even the slightest suggestion they were interested in the job, England should go for it.

"We are talking about two of the best managers in the world. Klopp is taking a break and I’m not sure whether stepping down from Manchester City is in Pep’s mind. But you have to aim high, and appointing either of those two would be a huge statement for England and their aims for the future."
